Gamespot Madden 2026 Switch 2 First Look

That's a huge problem concidering the tiny amount of storage in the Switch 2. They should have went with M.2 2230 like the Steam Deck.

I might just hold off on the Switch 2 for now.
It i weird man, no doubt.

There is definitely story to be told. It feels like NS2 is coming in really hot and specs have been changed last minute. Or fairly late in development. Even if that is incorrect, there is too many weird things to all be a coincidence .

The WiFi is bad, worse than Switch 1 in some respects, NS2 at times has a hard time connecting w/ NS1 controllers. (It creates input lag w/ ns1 pro controller).

The storage was not well thought out with the size of games from 3rd parties. Nintendo went all Vita with these Micro Sd Express carts. (Just as Vita did with its proprietary memory cards back in the day).

Which may be good in the long run, but they are clearly the "early adopter". Being the only major product that uses them.

All of this coupled with with the geopolitics and tariffs, parts issues, etc. Creates an interesting story to be told.

Is this really insinuating that games run better on the S2 internal memory rather than the SD card?
If that's true then that's a monumental mistake.

According to Nintendo Life, the game has a few "negative aspects":

- It seems that is running at a maximum of 40fps on both handheld/docked mode.

- No Cross Play with other platforms.

- The Game seems to be always online.

Still they give it 8/10.

MicroSD Express is a 6 year old standard... that nobody had used. Maybe it's a remnant from the Switch Pro since the Switch 1 also used SD Cards.

I went and watched a few youtube videos of Madden 26 running on Switch 2 and Steam Deck via dual boot. It looks like I am leaning toward the PS5 version and using the Portal for handheld. Apparently, my attitude toward streaming games is changing.

The fact that a garbage ai/gameplay pay to win sports title that survives ONLY bc it purchased exclusive rights and isn't visually impressive to begin with is seen as some sort of W shows just how bad the gaming industry has become

we knew the exact SoC with full specs (aside from clock speeds) used inside the system since around 2021.
It was such a clusterfuck it only DESTROYED the sales numbers for any other system in the history of the entire industry. See, there's new standards set in lalaland.

Haven't been paying close attention to this but...it seems like it's increasingly apparent that, like its predecessor, Switch 2 is underpowered and will provide very compromised third party experiences.

Is that fair?

SD express spec from 2018 is not just microSD but also full-size SD express cards which is what got out. Adata were full-size. Lexar announced some in 2021 but never released.

The first commercial microSD express was last year with samsung.

There's a world of difference between laying out a standard, the first products and having something usable. Nobody had used? February 2024 first microSD express card.

EA didn't optimize the game as well as it could have. These Madden games get very short development cycles and have hard releases dates where they will often release knowing damn well the game is not finished.

People using this game as a way to deem Switch 2 underpowered are most likely haters trying to use anything to undermine the console (per usual)

Agreed. They wanted to make the launch window, and I'm sure there will be patches.

Well, it is my day off and I am out here doing the Lords work. I bought Madden and DragXDrive.

I played 3 quick games on Madden:
Game 1: on Rookie, and Arcade mode.
Game 2 on Pro and simulation.
Game 3 on All Pro and Simulation.
I played two games with the Detroit Lions and one with the Philadelphia Eagles.

REAL TALK ABOUT MADDEN 26 Switch 2 edition:

1.) It receives a "Day 1 patch". Unsure what the patch does.
2.) It is a Smaller download that originally shown in Eshop. It is 55GB, instead of 72GB originally listed as.

THE GOOD:
1.) "GAMEPLAY" is either at 30fps, or above. It is hard to tell. BUT IT FEELS SMOOTHER than Madden 13 on Wii U did at 30 fps.
2.) In the initial options, there is a streamlined "passing option" called "Classic" to make the passing like Xbox360/PS3. This is VERY HELPFUL for someone who remembers when Gatorade came in only one flavor.
3.) This is playable in "GAMEPLAY" mode. Notice i said Gameplay.
4.) the Game "FEELS LIKE MADDEN".

THE BAD:
1.) The jutters and drops in framerate are still present in cutscenes and after play animations. Extremely noticeable.
2.) There is animation clipping in the non gameplay portions and cutscenes.
3.) The AI still makes dumb play calls.
4.) Occasionally button presses pre snap do not respond as well DEFENSE only.
5.) Kicking is awful. Still an ongoing annual issue, i see. There is a "DELAY on Button press" with kicking.
6.) The CGI LOAD SCREENS are PS3 level bad. Barely functioning. Should have been a static image.
7.) Switch 2 gets HOT!!! A little scary, actually.

THE USER ERROR/RUMOR:
1.) User error with button placement on Switch Pro controller. This is hard to get used too.

I am hopeful the rumor about Xbox games coming to Switch 2 is real, as well as a rumored Xbox controller for 3rd party games on NS2, which was rumored years ago!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

1.) This game still needs a few patches. But it does not deter me from playing it in the current state.
2.) Not as good as a PS5/Xbox version. Don't think it will be the same going in.
3.) EA/Nintendo, can we disable cutscenes?
This would solve a lot of issues in my opinion, with the disjointed feeling of the jutters and possibly keep the NS2 from melting.

If you are missing football though, for the average consumer, this game is fine.

A few patches and we should be good until next year.
Next year, I want a lot of these issues ironed out.
Especially the HEAT, and the jutters.
Just disable cutscenes!

EDIT:
Notice Settings:
- i turned off HDR on NS2.
- i installed Madden directly on NS2 itself.
- these were all tested in DOCK MODE only.

I'm a Raiders fan, so yeah, lol.

I played a few quick play games and I feel like I got the controls down. It doesn't hurt that I haven't played Madden in a while so the button layout doesn't affect my muscle memory at all.

Gameplay framerate is a smooth 30fps. I noticed zero dips. That's what matters the absolute most. I didn't notice some dips during play selection, in the background.

I've only been playing it in portable mode. The UI seems like it's native 1080p there, but the gameplay looks lower. Not bad by any means, just not as clear as the the UI resolution.

I'm looking forward to taking this current Raiders team to the Super Bowl in Franchise Mode and creating a new QB for them in Superstar Mode.

Ok, so if you change camera angles it changes how the game runs as well.

If you play with "broadcast" for the NFL 2k style horizontal camera angles. NO ISSUES at all, everything is perfect. The Cutscenes are still a problem.

Couple of questions:

1.) Does anyone know if there is anyway to disable these cutscenes?

2.) Is there a way to implement the "hit stick" in it's older incarnation on ps2/ps3 era?

I might give this a try. Still an hour left to download. GAHHH KEYCARDS!!!

The internal SSD on the Steam Deck is officially not meant to be user replaceable and you do have to open it yourself and take it apart to replace or upgrade it

Nintendo obviously doesn't want to make a device the user has to tear apart to add more storage. That's why they chose an external card storage format like SD Express instead of internal SSD slot. I mean this should be completely obvious to anyone paying attention but some people need it explained to them I guess

I don't need it explained to me, I know why they did it.

But they should have made sure SD Express was ready for modern compressed games and/or given us more internal storage.

Let us know your thoughts.
Ace Ventura All Righty Then GIF

Mind you, I'm two shots and two beers in, and I haven't played this game since the GameCube. I've clicked through a few menus, and I've played some pre-season shit where I seem to have ten downs...but I won despite not scoring a TD or FG...or even a safety. My journey might be hilarious, since it involves alcohol and ignorance. More to come...

My man. I thought I was the only one here the openly admitted to my drinking and gaming/posting.

I finally got around to starting a Franchise, and I saw that there are already over 1 million leagues on just the S2 alone. Seems like this game has sold pretty well.

Okay, day 2 with the game, and only 3 beers this evening. Ditched that training shit and went for a preseason game, Rams (me) vs. Chargers. I...admit I played in rookie mode, but the Rams looked like the Rams; Nakua caught a couple of impossible passes on his way to a two-TD performance, Stafford was praised by spreading the ball across several receivers, and Kyren Williams was as explosive up the gut as a day-old Taco Bell burrito supreme. The only person that DIDN'T get a catch (and I was trying) was Tyler Higbee. 30-0. I kneeled for the final two plays, because I'm classy like that.

EDIT- played in broadcast mode on D, and classic on offense. My game is loaded directly to on-board memory, and the hitches were minor and easy to ignore.
