Gamestop stops PSP presell program

We received an email at work yesterday that Gamestop has reached its limit of how many systems could be reserved. What is intresting is that this number is WAY lower than what we were allowed to do on the Nintendo DS. Looks like another limited launch. The SKUs have been pulled, and no more official reserves can be taken. If you reserve one from now going forward you will probably only get a generic reserve which doesn't mean shit.

A friend of mine preordered a PSP yesterday at EB Games and he said "and this guarantees me a unit on day one?" and they were all NO. So... yeah.

Gamestop, to my knowledge, is not big on the whole "2nd shipment" reserves. We generally only do the first shipment and everything thereafter is first come, first serve.

I pre-ordered PSP like 3 months ago or something, it was before christmas I believe.

I also double-checked to make sure it's on the right SKU.

So I'm solid :)

I don't know the actual company wide number, but my store took 54 DS reservations, and 16 PSP reserves before the SKU was pulled. There is still a chance of getting a unit on day one, just show up early. A lot of people had puled reserves after the price was announced and we are still allocated those units.

Is "Sony PSP HW" the correct sku?

Yes, it is. It should say Sony PSP HW ($50 Reserve) or something to the effect. It shold also start with a 99 in its SKU -- (e.g. 99XXXX).

Generic SKUs say

Reservation or Transfer Deposit

Wow only 16?

The stores in my area were all around 25-30+. (I think the highest I saw was 34). Curious if the stores will be getting more units then they have pre-ordered or if the allotment really is that tight to where, if there was 16 preordered then that store will only get 16 to cover for the stores that had 50 plus.

I made it a point to tell my clerks that they cannot say a price until it was announced. I also told them not to translate the Japanese PSP price or they would be written up for false information. We had a problem where we had to honor a low price on that other handheld because one of my guys is a fucking moron.

Huh. Sucks that you have an idiot who works for you. I'm suprised that you would have to honor a price given during a pre-order phase. I told my customers that the price could range from $150 to $250 depending on how Sony wanted to release the unit. I just always made sure that they knew when the price was announced if they wanted to change their mind they could.

Que sera, though I guess. Just seems like you missed out on a good opportunity to get the number hounds off your back.

Here is the way it works. Gamestop, as a company, gets X amount of units for all 1800 stores. When the home offic feels that the company is approaching the number, the SKU is removed. All units reserved are allocated, and others are distributed EVENLY (which I don't agree with, but oh well). We had 54 DSs reserved and received 78. So no store gets more than another after reserves are accounted for. Another store had 73 reserves and got 78 DSs.

We wouldn't have had to if he didn't write the price he quoted on the receipt and sign it.

Perhaps GS will re-open pre-orders again in a week or two if clearer numbers are released by Sony so they have a better idea of what the initial shipment is.

Eitherway, I reserved mine at GS before Christmas, and got the automated call last night with all the details on price, value pack, etc. so I'm assuming I have the right SKU for the PSP.

Question for Syckx:

I reserved my system on January 17th and to be honest I'm worried that I might not get a unit on launch day. Is there anything you reccomend that I do? Ask the manager to guarantee me a copy, pay off the reservation in full, get there early? Thanks a lot in advance.

You are completely fine. You will get a unit if you had a reserve before February 9th. You can pay in full and that will get you a little more priority since we are rated on sell-through. If you pay it off, you are commonly rung up before you are even in the store.

Hay, anyone here work at EB? i made my pre-order on 12/14/04 and on the receipt under peaell info it said i was customer #3. im thinking this guarantees me a unit at launch?

Funny, my EB was all "Yep."

I preordered on Jan.14, but I'm shooting to be one of the first in line. Already booked a couple days off of work (still not as impressive as my week off when Halo 2 hit :))

Does anyone know of any Midnight openings? I can only assume EB and such will do this, but haven't heard much yet..

I preordered through ebgames.com on 2/04. Which was right on or just after the official announcement. I better get my unit on day 1.

I'm going to pick up my PSP as soon as EB opens, then ride the Metro in circles playing Lumines until the batteries run out or my eyes melt, whichever comes first.

The entire PSP pre-order situation is vexes me. Sony said it would try to ship a million of them at launch, right? Well, we had been taking pre-orders for 500K, as a company. And that's not that we would get 500K, but that Sony was going to ship 500K total and we'd get a cut of that. We had about 30 pre-orders as of last weekend, right after they announced the price. And they didn't tell us to hold up yet. I can't understand why, all of a sudden, having another 500,000 to sell means the pre-orders have to stop so suddenly. Unless there was a huge influx of orders.

Most Game Rushes should still be taking theirs. $50 down gets you one as they are supposed to stop taking them once they have 5.

I'm sure you'll get one at launch, it would be very unlike EB to still be taking reserves if they couldn't still guarantee them. I do not believe the Customer Number has anything to do with the number of presales or your place in "line" though, since the Customer Number on my PSP presale receipt is 7653. This is more than likely what number you are in the store's computer, more of a data entry type thing, a number that keeps all your info in one spot. Anyhoo, if my EB has 7653 reserves for the PSP, I'll rethink my guess...

Other stores could just as easily have had 16 DS reservations and 54 PSP reservations in this scenario. One store's allocation is in no way an indicator that there are more/less PSPs shipping out at launch than the DS had.

Eh, what the hell? That's not an sort of official document. Any dumbass can write a number and sign his name. No store employees are authorized to set prices, so in no way is the store responsible for any price an employee makes up. I can't believe you let a customer with a flimsy hand-written note convince you guys otherwise. Ridiculous.

thx.

Another question: my receit doesn't say what number I am, so how do they distribute units on the launch day then? Do I have to be there when they open the store to guareentee myself a PSP?

If I preordered at Gamestop in December in-store, will I be guaranteed a first day unit? Do they make sure to place enough orders to satisfy every single one of their preorders?

EB is still taking preoders and not guaranteeing anything. Preorders for 1st shipment were cut off weeks ago, yet they still take preorders. There's one EB in the district that has over 500, yes thats 5-0-0 preorders alone!! That's a South Florida EB actually, hopefully no one here ordered from there. Good luck to all those people hoping to get a PSP at launch. :lol

Wow, that sucks butt! So it seems GameStop has better customer service so far with the whole PSP preorder wahoo, since at least they have the decency to cut off reserves, and to even say on their website that any orders placed now will be fulfilled post-launch. I can't believe EB would just keep taking preorders willy nilly. They didn't tell me anything about not getting one on launch day. How did EB handle DS reserves, or for that matter, PS2, Xbox, and GCN reserves, did they just keep allowing people to preorder up until the day they released? WTF? I is confused. EB sucks butt! Can anyone who works at EB clarify this situation?

500? Holy shit. Like I said, my store less than 10% of that. I can't imagine how they got so many people to pre-order.

For what it's worth, they're selling countless PSP's in Singapore. I haven't really bothered to check prices but I'm sure it'd be over $250 US

EB really doesn't have a policy on pre-orders. Atleast I've never seen any. Our EB stopped taking pre-orders for 1st shipment weeks ago, I even posted it here. EB was at the time was very close to there PSP allocation. God and to get people to preoder a PSP during that time was a pain in the ass, no one wanted it.

That EB that has over 500 preorders did it in a very small amount of time. They had over 200 in just 2 weeks. How they did it I have no idea. Next closest in the district has over 100 last I heard. Plus the Manager at that one just a Japanese PSP, showed it to customers one day and ended up with 20+ preorders the same day. So I'm guessing well over a 100 now.

Out store is dead last in PSP preorders, so I don't think it will be too hard to get one at launch from us. Any customers who preordered more than 1 will only get one. Even though I have one preordered I'm still on the fence about it. Yes, I could probably sell it for more but I hate doing that sort of thing. We'll see.

Oh and for the PStwo we took preorders, but then stopped for a while. A customer complains enough they can be put on a list. Although we've had PStwos already for the past 3 days, tomorrow will be 4. What's really funny though is that the PStwo is the only system we have. For some reason I can't remember about the DS' though. We have so many of those right now too. Oh and no DS or PStwo is being sold with a bundle, atleast at our store. I know other stores are still doing it though.

Very nice. I found this little gem on EB's PSP page... "We cannot guarantee availability at launch." But when you add a PSP to your cart, it clearly says Pre Order: Ships on 3/24/2005.

Gamestop doesn't do numbers, per se. Everyone who's receipt says Sony PSP HW ($50) will get one, day one. The use of numbers is redundant.

I went into work between classes and we have a new pre-order SKU, but the delivery date is not guaranteed. This is the first time I recall Gamestop doing a 2nd shipment reserve.

they did second shipment reserves for halo2 special edition but MS upped shipments to cover them all on first day if needed

^^^Yeah, Gamestop never needed the 2nd shipment SKU from what I heard. It was always covered. It was a publicity thing. We were never even told to seperate them.

I remember when Vice City came out on the PS2 a few years back there was a second shipment sku. Pretty sure there was one for the GBA SP as well. Could be wrong on that one though.

Heh, ever been to California and dealt with our awesome consumer laws? Anyways, I didn't authorize it, our District Manager did after telling me it wasn't worth what it could turn into. I have no stock in the company, I could give a shit.

In response to your other assertion, Gamestop pulled the reserve SKU sooner and with less reserves company-wide than they did with the DS. I think it can be inferred that we are getting far less PSP than we did the DS.
