Gandalf and Frodo to return for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

"I hear there's going to be another movie based in Middle-earth, and it's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum," McKellen teased at the For the Love of Fantasy fan event in London on Sunday.

"I'll tell you two secrets about the casting: There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's a character in the movie called Gandalf," he said.

Smiling to himself as the crowd gasped in amazement, McKellen joked, "Apart from that, my lips are sealed!"

No expectations for this movie. Just another filler like The War of the Rohirrim was. I know Peter Jackson is on board as executive producer, but that doesn't change anything.

Ian McKellen, talented as he is, was already looking tired during The Hobbit. I can't see how they'll make this credible, considering it takes place before LotR.

We saw what happened with Picard — Patrick Stewart was dragging himself from scene to scene.

In a way, they could have brought in new actors, but everything that's been done after 2003 (and that's starting to be a long time ago) hasn't lived up to the mark...

I had no confidence back then, and I still don't, that they can come up with anything good. If they wanted to do filler, it should have been right after, in 2005, etc.

Well, maybe there will be one good thing: Weta will once again create grandiose sets, costumes, and weapons. That's something, at least.

It's wild to think Ian McKellen is 86 now, so I'm not sure how much he'll actually be involved with the filming. Back when The Lord of the Rings was shot in 1999, he was 60 and Viggo Mortensen was 40. Viggo's 66 today, and Elijah Wood - who was just 18 at the time - is now 44. Goddamn, I feel and am old.

Edit: Christopher Lee was 77 during the filming of LotR in 1999.

I share a lot of your cynicism with this. It's frustrating to see. I wonder when are Hollywood executives going to realise they need to target their core audience(40yo nerds) with these projects?

Forget about gen-Z/Alpha and the 'modern audience' they are just not interested in mature sci-fy. They have the attention span and imagination of a wasp.

Haha let's bring back Ian Holm who's dead since 2020 too while we're at it no ? They already did in Alien Romulus

Might as well.

Why stop there? They can even include a scene where Treebeard is in the background and winks at the camera, just to get that nostalgia juice flowing.

Make up a new character as well, just to involve a love triangle between Gandalf and Frodo. Have them bang in a threesome on Mt Doom, just to subvert expectations.

That's the sort of creativity I'm expecting from this slop.

He came back in Alien Romulus so why not.

I just wish these offshoot things had nothing to do with the legendary characters or story. its a giant world. id rather just see smaller stories from the 3rd or 4th age...in little parts of the world...completely disconnecte from the lord of the rings story. As long as it stays true to the world tolkien envisioned and the world building, way the worlds cultures look feel and act, the way creatures behave and the way magic works in the world....it would be fun. IE not rings of power trash.

Its such an amazing giant world that tolkien created but everyones stuck on the ring

Not to sound ageist (I am), but I can't imagine Ian as Gandalf anymore. Even if they digitally de-age him and it somehow looks good (it rarely does), he won't have the same energy.

I think Pedro could play Gandalf
Why only Gandalf? Might as well CGI every character into Pedro Pascal.

Man...they gonna return characters just to spit at them and at the franchise again.

The problem with LotR is, paradoxically, Jackson's films now. Nothing better has been made since, a reboot would be a disaster, and the circle jerk around the actors never ends (see Reddit).

I love that trilogy, but it's become suffocating—especially in terms of visual imagery. Nobody imagines Aragorn as anyone other than Viggo. Same with the design and everything else—Weta was just too good.

But because of that, we're stuck, endlessly circling back to the trilogy. To the point where many don't even realize the books are, often, very different.

Visually too, for that matter. Whatever comes after, for years to come, will inevitably be worse. And the current rotten 'woke' era of the industry isn't going to help.

I can already imagine that in Hunt for Gollum, some strong female character will teach Aragorn how not to be toxic and have him hand over his powers to Arwen when he becomes king. :messenger_smiling:

I'm sure I've posted it here before, but I'll do it again. There is the section of the appendicies they are using as the basis for this film. This is ALL OF IT.

So there would be some opportunity to visit Frodo in there, but why show it? If anything we should see the corruption of Saruman as being the much more relevant and interesting event during this time but are they gonna recast that role? And Liv Tyler, bless her, just might fit back into that Arwen costume :P

If Aragorn and Boromir are in it I'm down. Hopefully they de-age Ian McKellen. He was already looking haggard in the Hobbit 10 years ago. He must look terrible now.

:P
Still more source material than the War of the Rohirrim movie had

Yay, more soulless IP milking !.
Andy Serkis is a good actor but most of the stuff he has directed has sucked, so him being in charge doesn't exactly inspire confidence either.
Also, according to IMDB 2 of the 3 writers are mostly known for writing War of the Rohirrim, which was terrible. (the third writer at least worked on the Peter Jackson movies)

Hollywood probably loves the source material being vague, it gives them more flexibility to add stuff.
There's a 0% chance Aragorn and Gandalf aren't joined by some diverse strong independent female warrior .

A movie based on Gollum again? He's got to be the character people hated the most in LOTR movies. I never read the books, so maybe the character is better there but in the movies he was like Jar Jar Binks. Ultimate cheese. What an annoyance.

Who would want to find Gollum?

I guarantee they try and appeal to the Gen Alpha market as well. Throw in brainrot slang (Galndalf complements Aragorn on his "rizz") and have come viral "Chicken Jockey" moment that gets the kids foaming at the mouth.

You just KNOW this is the direction they're going to take.

The new generations don't realize it, but Liv Tyler was our Sydney Sweeney back in the day.

I think you are missing teh critical fctor about Sydneys popularity....:P

And I would probably peg Alicia Silverstone over Liv from that era....

though you'd have to be CRAZY to force a choice between them :P

You know what ? They can do what they want, they already fucked star wars and aliens i don't care anymore, i'll just watch the ones i like and forget the rest...
