Philadelphia, although the fact that Tom Hanks character was gay is more incidental to the plot than the point, was still a great movie as well.

have you seen "Not Another Gay Movie"? its a comedy that parodies teen comedies (american pie and stuff). it was pretty decent. you see an erect penis in it if thats a good thing lol

EDIT: o and put it under good.

So... wait, is "great" better than "excellent?"

Only one I know is Brokeback Mountain...I'm sure I've seen others.

And the only one I can recall with allot of gay inneudo's was History Boys.

This is odd for me...I need to go research some more. I feel inferior

I don't remember their names, but that blond dude was soooo hot (probably the owner of the erect penis--through the silhouette)

Wow, the only gay movies I knew about were Brokeback Mountain and Not Another Gay Movie =/

I don't know if I would consider all of those listed as "gay-movies." Some are just movies with gay characters in them. But then I haven't heard of half of them.

I noticed you tended away from any full-on gay comedies (which is honestly, usually a good thing) and quite a a few of the lower budget, better known gay flicks, which tend to me more overtly gay-themed than alot of what you've listed. The mentioned "Another Gay Movie" is pretty damn hilarious - though probably a bit too extreme for our straight brethren to take (particularly the overly compensatory ones here at GAF).

I also liked "The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green." It's not art by any means, but it's pretty funny and cute - and David Monahan is such a hottie!! :D

"Trick" is another rather inconsequential, though not horrible gay flick that I like. You get to see Tori Spelling take another turn at acting horribly.

For a cool foreign gay movie, try "The Man I Love." It's a French film that I really like. The cover of the US DVD is absolutely stupid looking though, so don't let it turn you off from it.

Has anyone seen "Hate Crime"? I saw about the first 2/3s of it and thought it was quite good, but I missed the end so it could have gone to shit. Anyway, if it didn't, I recommend it.

I was just about to post a request for this. I have to program for our LGBT group on campus, and I wanted to do a movie night twice a month.

Thank you.

EDIT: The only ones I could come up on the top of my head while I was at work today that I actually enjoyed were Philadelphia, For the Bible Tells Me So, Brokeback Mountain, But I'm a Cheerleader..., The Laramie Project, TransAmerica, The Birdcage, and RENT (which isn't necessarily gay...)

Cruising - Al Pacino goes undercover in the gay community to stop a murderer

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge - the gayest horror film ever that is not explicitly gay

I absolutely cannot stand Latter Days - but to each his own I suppose. The only redeeming part of that movie is Jacqueline Bisset.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaat
ok i'll give u the acting is mediocre but the story....wow...i love it!!!

Agreed. Something about it rubs me the wrong way. The acting leaves a lot to be desired, too.

Was "Eating Out" a 'gay' movie? I just remember that one scene where the one guy blows the other who is supposedly straight. That's really the only part I've seen, though.

I remember seeing Urbania like 7 times. Another ridiculously good 'gay' film.

"Dog Day Afternoon" with Al Pacino. It's about a gay bank robber that is trying to get money to get his boyfriend a sex change.

The story is actually perhaps the most moronic part. The whole mormon thing is so played out, granted, it's played out in pornos, but it's still played out. :lol

Completely forgot about "Urbania," I love that movie, but it depresses me, the ending is sad and uplifting all at once.

I suppose the HBO miniseries version of "Angels in America" has to be mentioned as well - though I do have some gripes with that version of it, overall though it's great, and Meryl Streep is amazing in it. It has some amazing performances.

Where is Sordid Lives in this? Its tagline is "A black comedy about white trash". Although I doubt it was incredibly low budget, its shot to appear that way. Leslie Jordan is freaking hilarious.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Love that flick.

Really improved my attitude towards lbgt's. Not that I was homophobic or anything. I guess it helped me finally own the idea that the love same sex couples share is no different than that of straight people.

I say it about 5 years ago. My girlfriend at the time showed it to me. In retrospect.... I think she suspected me a poof. lol

Ooh, I think I'd put that in "Excellent." I forgot about that one.

I've seen Philadelphia and But I'm A Cheerleader... (as well as numerous other LGBT films), but don't like them enough to list. And I've seen Cruising, but I wouldn't put that homophobic piece of shit anywhere near recommending.

I haven't seen the other films mentioned, so consider them noted.

As far as what's a "gay movie," I don't think something has to hit you over the head in order to be considered. I actually left off some movies that are even less obviously gay in intent that I'd otherwise list. But it's not meant to be some kind of master list - just what I've personally seen and have liked, lol.

Damn, I haven't seen any of those with the exception of Brokeback. What would you consider your top 3?

1. My Own Private Idaho
2. Tropical Malady
3. Beau Travail

My taste is pretty different than the average, though. I'd say a lot of people would probably get at least some passing enjoyment out of My Own Private Idaho.

How I meant it is: good is like a three star movie, excellent is like a four star movie, great is like a five star movie.

Cruising isn't really homophobic. I can see why someone might think that, but then they'd be wrong. It's certainly not a piece of shit. It's a good sleazy crime story.

There's this documentary called The Celluloid Closet about portrayals of LGBT people throughout cinema history, and the screenwriter if Philadelphia tells a story about how he and his boyfriend at the time were chased down and beat up. One of the guys who did it said, "If you saw Cruising, you'd know why you deserve this."

Also, there's this:
"I’m quite willing to sit down with responsible members of the gay community and have them tell me just how a film like mine is going to provoke more violence against gays," Friedkin told gay activist and film scholar Vito Russo in a New York magazine interview he gave during the film’s shooting.
Two months after Cruising’s release a man armed with a sub-machine gun opened fire on patrons of the Ramrod -- a bar prominently featured in the film -- killing two and wounding twelve.
Friedkin had no comment.

Now, you can make the argument that this is just another case of the media being blamed for violence. And of course those examples remain separate from the film itself. But I think they're examples of what terrible ideology the film utilizes.

Cruising is as much of a "good sleazy crime story" as Birth of a Nation is a "good sleazy war film."

The response of the deranged has no bearing on the intent or quality of a work of art.

Celluloid Closet is a good movie and I feel stupid for not bringing it up in my first post, but I don't agree with its take on Cruising.

To each his own.

Yeah, we'll agree to disagree on this one.

I kind of forgot documentaries, but I don't know where I'd add them. I don't think I've seen nearly enough really quality LGBT docs, though. So if anyone has any recommendations ... !

A gay movie thread with no Gregg Araki films on it? Mysterious Skin is my favorite.

Splendor is also pretty gay considering it's about a bisexual relationship with two men who are pretty attractive.

I'll submit Batman Begins as a gay movie.

When I saw that movie, I thought "I'd do that kid".
batmanbegins2.jpg

The only chick in the whole movie is Katie Holmes. Boyish.
She's performs poorly and her character manages to make life hell in the ways that women do.

I'd have scarecrow there over Katie 8 days a week. Thanks, Batman Begins. :/ Movie turned me gay.

I'd do Katie just so my dick could grace the same womb Tom Cruise enjoys

I guess that's good even though transgender has nothing to do with gay. Hedwig and the Palahanuik book Invisible Monsters do a disservice to the understanding of transgendered people by portraying them as messed up people who get operations out of a desire for attention or confusion.

Transamerica with Felicity Huffman is a great film and handles the topic splendidly.

I loved Shelter. First "gay" movie that I know of to have seen other than Brokeback. I'm glad this thread was made, now I may explore more.

Angels in America is great. It's a miniseries, but amazing. I would read a Tony Kushner shopping list.

Maurice is a good film as well.

There was a recent French film called Before I Forget that is really good as well, but depressing.

Paris is Burning is so sad but it really is great.

There's another documentary called Southern Comfort about transgendered individuals that is worth seeing.
