GBA software sales worldwide > PS2 software sales worldwide???

maybe Nintendo means that there's been more nintendo software sales on the GBA than on the PS2? :lol

PS2 software shipments as of Dec. 31 of 2004: 775 million.

I thought GBA software shipment was half that figure?

Unless they mean the entire line of GB software? *shrugs* It'll be meaningless either way, methinks.

With a notoriously low tie ratio and lower hardware sales, I don't see how GBA software sales could ever eclipse PS2 software sales.

Interview with Reggie in the other thread, and he clearly states GBA software.

Reggie: 'We are announcing that we will have surpassed PS2 in terms of total Game Boy Advance sales on a worldwide basis'

Where does that quote mention software?

can't even be true if they mean units shipped to retailers. unless retailers are in the habit of massively overbuying gba games. i wonder what the point of this is.

I think a more important question would be,

"If this were true, what would it mean?"

Two different highly popular platforms, both substantial market leaders.

that small children are secretly working lucrative jobs, and as such have more disposable income than we ever suspected?

How on earth could this be possible. Not only are there fewer GBA games than PS2 games, but there are fewer platinum sellers on the GBA (I can only think of two, the Pokemon titles).

But you see, since the GBA plays back GBC and GB titles, it's software sales eclipse the PS2 Software sales, since the PS2 only plays PS2 games WELL.

GENIUS MOVE, NINTENDO!!!!

What about ps1 games?

I think it's pretty obvious, Nintendo counts ROMs as a sale even though they don't see any money from them. :lol

Whoops.

As most of you have probably noticed, I'm a pretty big Mo advocate around here. The site has a great design, and I feel like the the news coverage has been pretty good as well. Some nice scoops the past couple weeks.

That being said, that little tidbit is wrong ;)

The news writer misinterpreted Reggie's quote (and no, it wasn't me). The article will be corrected soon.

The operative word is *well*. While the GBA perfectly plays GB and GBC games, the PS1 games on PS2 suffer problems such as *smoothed image* and *reduced load time*. There's even a HHHUUUGGEE Percent of games that are incompatible! *SEVEN!!*

There's even PS2 games that are incompatible too :)
Anyone remember Reiselied: Ephemeral Fantasia?

so they're claiming gba hardware sales > ps2 hardware sales? going by independent figures, that isn't true either, is it? i guess we don't have numbers for europe, but i thought ps2 was proportionately even stronger in europe while gameboy never really caught on.

I don't know whether the whole buying games craze caught on but the hardware buying craze sure as hell did.

It might be true.

I know a lot of guys about my age who have about 30 or 40 games(I have about 65 myself). You'd be surprised at the amount of people who are really big on the GBA's software.

And some people wonder why Sony wants in on the handheld racket.

I really doubt it. Not only is the GBA userbase about 15-20 million behind the PS2's, the attach ratio is about half of the PS2's as well.

Last we knew (December) it was 82M PS2 to 67M GBA iirc. That figure doesn't include GB Player or PSX sales though...

PS1~ 101M
PS2~ 82M
183M total

GB~ 72M
GBC~ 49M
GBA~ 67M
188M total

...the only way I can see GBA leading is if it really took off in China (where PS2's stalled) and other secondary markets. PS2's Euro lead is just too big, in fact Europe is the main reason PlayStation platforms have seen such huge figures (GBA and PS2 are actually about even in America and Japan).

Impressive as that is, my question is why has Fils-Aime decided to throw out that number? What a strange comparison it is to put handheld numbers against console numbers.

He got burned big time by constantly comparing the GC to the PS2 at E3. He isn't making that mistake again.

I don't think its a strange comparison. Consoles and Handhalds compete for the same market. For example, GoW came out at the same time as the PSP. I am sure that GoW's sales would have been better if not for the PSP launch.
