GC 3rd party sales in Japan: Hardest thing to understand on the world ?

It's fucking amazing how they have gone...Nintendo launches the system and months later PS0 appears, a semi-port of a DC game. Well, the game easily breaks the 100k mark in a few weeks. The same could be said about SA2 which sold pretty good as well.

Namco's turn. Both SC2 and Tales of Symphonia feature respectable sales...And the same can be said about FF::CC which despite sucking huge ammounts it reached 400k...

Now to Capcom. They release Biohazard which sells pretty good on the first days reaching 300k units which is not bad at all. Months later Biohazard 0 appears selling a respectable ammount too, being the first GC title in Japan from a 3rd party.

NOW, tell me why RE4 is doing SO POOR ! Sorry but I don't get it. The game seems good, they have done tons of adds and there were tons of people who bought 1 and 0 ! How can it be that the JP audience doesn't give a fuck about it ?

I don't get it...And sure CAPCOM must be like me...If this game bombs on both PS2 and GC, I believe Capcom will be in serious finantial troubles. :(

I can think of very few instances in which porting a game from the Xbox/GCN to the PS2 made it sell better than its original console iteration. It's nice to get more sales, but games like Viewtiful Joe don't appeal to the PS2 audience...not at all. Okami's going to bomb too. (in the US)

Dunno. Several factors might weight in. Maybe the japanese gamers didn't like changes?

Are you telling me that the +300K guys that bought the GC version of RE0 are just waiting for a PS2 release that will come later ?
Why ? I can't see the reason. Just to screw Nintendo ?

Maybe they sold their systems as GC releases dried up? When RE0 was released GC was still healthy unlike now.

maybe the Japanese gamer does not like the over the shoulder viewpoint and other changes that have made it so popular in the U.S.?

going waaaaay out on a limb on that one. :)

Just for fun...

I'm guessing it's the FPS aiming. Either that or Nintendo has become nearly irrelevant in the market. But, hey, I can't tell; dating and horse racing sims are still huge amongst those crazies.

I definately think a lot of different factors are weighing in. Some posters living in Japan have mentioned store owners telling gamers that RE4 is coming to the PS2, so I think Capcom's announcement may have had an effect, though I suspect that it is small. Also, I'm seriously wondering if the changes to the core game have turned some gamers off from the experince. While it isn't a straight FPS, it's definately an action heavy game with very little of the REisms of past games. The game is also very challenging, which doesn't help Capcom with pull in more casual gamers.

Keep in mind that the second part is mostly speculation based on my limited knowledge. JohnTV has a point--it might be little to early to say anything in spite of how the market generally works.

Go Square Enix!

Although margins on the GBA are typically piss poor, I reckon Capcom must be laughing to the bank with the Mega Man games. Square could also make a lot with cheap and cheerful ports, if they wanted, but it seems like they'll be porting stuff to DS rather than GBA at this stage (bigger margins, for sure).

Capcom: "We made your kid buy the same gameboy game 8 times"

Probably cuz you can't blow the heads off villagers in the Japanese version.
They got ripped.

Heh!

Honestly, I think Japanese gamers prefer familiarity. They want that clunky, fixed-camera, item box-style RE. Dragon Quest has to be the same, Final Fantasy has to be the same--NO CHANGES EVAR!

Remember, those are just single versions of the MMBN games (except 4, which saw both versions release simultaneously). For totals...

MegaMan Battle Network~ 207,288
MegaMan Battle Network 2~ 446,938
MegaMan Battle Network 3 (Blue+Black)~ 668,947
MegaMan Battle Network 4 (Red Sun+Blue Moon+4.5)~ 1,006,879
MegaMan Battle Network 5 (Blues)~ 332,974

...the Colonel version of EXE.5 still has to release yet too (expect another 200-300k). The DS game (EXE6?) should be huge. Also, here's the other notable Square Enix GBA releases if you're wondering...

-Sword of Mana (Square Enix) 277,634
-Final Fantasy 1&2: Dawn of Souls (Square Enix) 270,789
-Dragon Quest Characters: Toruneko no Daibouken 2 Advance (Square Enix) 181,024
-Dragon Quest Characters: Toruneko no Daibouken 3 Advance (Square Enix) 116,948

Maybe because the game was only out for three days when they compiled those sales figures?

People that say this dont pay much attention to game sales in Japan. In most cases the games in Japan sell the most on day 1.

RE4 isn't doing so well because the Gamecube is pretty much at the end of its lifespan in Japan. Systems' game sales always tend to do terrible around then. :P

people are waiting for the ps2 version. capcom prematurely killed the gc version.

I love when Nintendo fans bash Konami for lack of support...Like if they didn't pay enough for it in the N64 era...

Tell that to Bahamut Lagoon, Chronno Trigger, DKC3, DQVI, DQVII...

i don't understand how the announcement of a ps2 version is killing sales of the gamecube version of re4. it'd obviously dissuade people from buying a gamecube to play re4, but i don't see how it affects the x million people who already own gamecubes. do lots of gamecube owners think like that poor gafer who was pilloried by the nintendo mob when he declared that he was waiting for the ps2 version's extra features? or do gamecube owners really disdain non-exclusives, even when they're exceptionally good and exceptionally hyped? both explanations seem inadequate.

if it's that gamecube owners have lost interest in their gamecubes, then that's a broader problem that a ps2 version of re4 can't explain. i also wonder whether re4 is really to the tastes of nintendo's audience.

To be fair it was faaar from only the nintendo mob ambushing that dude. It was a GAF lynching that transcended all system loyalties and factions.

Yeah, GameCube looks great compared to the other non PS2 platforms this generation.

I just want to add that the drop in sales has NOTHING to do with the gameplay changes. All the Japanese teenagers I've talked to were really excited about the new gameplay.

It's weird but I don't see the PS2 version selling the units the GC one hasn't sold...But that's just me. For another game, perhaps...but not for this one.
