BATMAN #608 GIVEAWAY IN MONDAY'S NY POST

On Monday, Gotham won’t be the only city Batman calls his own.

DC’s Dark Knight (who also has a movie coming out, as you might have heard) will get major exposure, thanks to the inclusion of a special edition Batman comic being given away in The New York Post. As you can probably guess from the cover illustration, DC Comics has confirmed for Newsarama that the special issue is a reprint of Batman #608 by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee and Scott Williams, the first part of the “Hush” storyline.

This isn’t the first time the Post has included such a “comics section” in conjunction with a film’s release. In May of 2003, the Post distributed a reported 500,000 copies of a reprint of Ultimate X-Men #2 timed to the release of X2.

DC has confirmed for Newsarama that the issue will contain the Comic Shop Locator Service toll-free number, as well as in-house ads for the Batman: Hush trades, which collect the 12-part story which begins in the giveaway issue. The publisher has also confirmed that 750,000 copies of the issue will be inserted into papers.
Batman Begins! June 15! Buy comics! :D

I really didn't like Hush, and the sad part is that really is one of the best storylines from the regular batman title in recent years. :(

They should have just bit the bullet on a couple cents more per issue and put out a floppy version of The Killing Joke or the first issue of Year One.

Well, that's pretty cool.

And although Hush isn't the greatest Batman story ever or anything, it's a good one to warrant mass market appeal. Jim Lee's art will be more impressive to the average person than than Tim Sale's would.

On that same note, however, I would have opted to put in a smaller-formatted War on Crime, as Alex Ross's art would really wow people.

No way, Year One/Killing Joke is too much $$$ for a promotional gimmick.

Plus, I think #608 is an excellent choice. Say what you will about the rest of "Hush," but #608 is an excellent teaser issue that's perfect for pulling new readers in. There's no backstory to worry about, you've got Batman being the Batman everyone's familiar with, you've got at least 3 classic villains making an appearance, you've got the underpinnings of a larger story at work, and the issue closes with a big cliffhanger ending. Plus, you've got Jim Lee on pencils and the cover; name recognition alone could draw in the ex- comic fans, and his artwork's strong enough to catch the eye of the mainstream.

Sucks that DC doesn't have All Star Batman (Or All Star Batman and ROBIN THE BOY WONDER as they're calling it, I guess) ready for this occasion - or at least have it in shops in time for Batman Begins. Jim Lee and "Sin City's Frank Miller" would have been cool for grabbing attention. Whatever.

That is both sad and factual.
