Ghost Recon 2 to be two different games

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/08/25/news_6105726.html

"We want to make the most MONEY OFF of each platform's GAMERS WALLETS capabilites,"

[UPDATE] Ubisoft confirms that the Xbox and PC version of the game will be set seven years apart from the PlayStation 2 and GameCube "prequel."

When a game is released on multiple platforms, it's usually a safe bet that the PC and console version will essentially be the same game. That won't be the case, though, with Ghost Recon 2. Ubisoft confirmed to GameSpot today that it is developing two different games that will be released with the Ghost Recon title this fall.

The first game is being developed for the Xbox and PC at Red Storm studios in Montreal and will be set in 2014. The second, in development for the PlayStation 2 and GameCube at Ubisoft Shanghai, will be a "prequel" to the Xbox/PC version and will have a related storyline and characters.

Beyond that, Ubisoft would say little about the Ghost Recon 2s, other than the PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox versions would both have online play. So why the separate development? "We want to make the most of each platform's capabilites," a rep told GameSpot.

why is Ubisoft bothering with half assed PC to PS2 ports? Do these games even sell on PS2?

They're brilliant. It's not a port, it's a prequel. You know, like Star Wars and everybody loves Star Wars!

First tragedy, then farce.
probably the poor PS2 and GC sales have led them to develop a game that will work better on those consoles.

I wonder, at least in the GC's case, if it's for the lack of commitment to the platform. Something like RE4 is living proof of the GC's competence when compared to the Xbox, and yet people shove it down the same side as the PS2... when in reality the GC is much closer to the Xbox in performance.
