Hell, I had no idea it was coming! I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for someone to pick this title up for release in North America. I can't believe it's coming out this month. Woo! I hope Media Blasters does a good job with it. And I wonder what the special art box looks like that comes with the SE version? Be sure to check out the onlne dealer 'The Right Stuf', they currently have a special on all Media Blasters products and you could save up to 30% on this. Also for those slackers who have not picked up Berserk or Twelve Kingdoms, now would be a good time.

I talked to the reps of Media Blasters back at the AnimeCentral con in Chicago back in May and they hinted that they were in negotiations for the rights. At this years GenCon they confirmed it. It's going to have the follwing goodies:

1) New English track by NYAV Post
2) 5.1 surround sound
3) Packaged with unreleased footage
4) Omake Episode
5) Box should have the model of the 'Eye of Von-Folger'

As you can tell I am somewhat of a diehard fan of this anime, and still own the VHS tapes. Very good series one one of the best musical scores EVER for anime!

Holy shit, where did this come from? Such an amazing series, glad it finally got picked up for DVD release.

Why is the running time listed as 90 minutes? I'm assuming it's going to be more than one volume?

I don't like the sounds of the new dub for Giant Robo. =/

Despite it being handled by Manga Entertainment previously, it was one of their really well-done titles and had a really good translation and dub that we won't have access to on DVD. I'm not a fan of the orignial Japanese and it saddens me that a really good dub/translation won't ever see the light of DVD now. I'm also not a big fan of Media Blasters and honestly the work that Manga Entertainment did with Giant Robo was infinitely better (they only had like two or three good translations/dubs/releases and Giant Robo was one of them) than almost every single project Media Blasters has ever done.

I'll have to stick to the subbed version of Giant Robo since I dread dubs of Media Blasters properties -_-.

Shouta I hear you, but Manga is all but a skeleton company now. I've tried to talk with those reps at every anime con I've gone to for the past 3 years and they just don't care about their properties anymore. Why do you think they had to parterner up to bring us 'Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex'. Ask yourself, when was the last time they got involved in a major project?!

When I asked them about Giant Robo a few years back they could'nt give me an answer but wanted to sell me the import version (which I suspect was an Asian bootleg'. Manga has been sucking wind for some time now and I really wish somebody else wold buy out all their good properties. They didn't even bother to complete the Fist of the North Star original TV series. They started it on VHS a few years back and then just stopped. That next year at the con they lied and said they did complete, until several other people who were upset said the same thing. We were all concerned about the upcoming DVD release and wanted to know if they were going to finish it. Well they did bring over 52+ episodes, but the series wasn't complete. So they either ran out of money, or once again left the fans hanging. Manga just plain sucks. They just haven't evoled and changed with the booming anime market (they could learn a lot from ADV). Sorry for the long post, but I thought I would give you my perspective on the situation.

I love the original dub as well, but I also want this series on DVD with quality in mind. Media Blasters has steeped up to the plate and I'll more than happy to support this project. They have always been some of the coolest reps at the cons, and have always been huge supporters of their fans.

Heh heh. That's how I was alerted to the fact that it's release was soon (I got an email newsletter from Rightstuf). I went ahead and used that discount on my order of the SE version. I checked all other websites and that's as good a price as you can get (checked amazon.com, uln.com, and deepdiscountdvd.com). Deepdiscountdvd.com's price is the same as Rightstuf's w/ UPS ground shipping cost included so I went with Rightstuf since I like that site more than the somewhat unpredictable Deepdiscountdvd.com (and I'd prefer UPS ground to media mail shipping for a somewhat more expensive item like this). Also I think that coupon code is resuseable so I may need to use it with Berserk since I've only purchased 3-4 of the DVDs from the series and I really need to complete it (at least I finally got around to getting the rest of the DVDs for the X TV series recently).

The original English Manga dub for Giant Robo is on the Japanese "Giga Premium Collection" Giant Robo box set that came out a few years ago. The downside is that there are no English subtitles. Unfortunately, it's pretty expensive (at least $200... if you can find it). But it sure looks cool as hell!

I wonder why the original dub isn't on the disc? Because Manga wouldn't sell it to Media Blasters? Maybe Media Blasters thought they could do a better job? Strange.

Fans of Giant Robo should look for the awesome Die-Cast Giant Robo. It's huge (about 8" tall), super poseable and super heavy. There are two versions: One that comes with a bazooka, and another that comes with missiles. I bought both for half-off when my local FAO Schwartz closed. You should still be able to find them for about $45 or so. Oh yeah, each come with a different version of a little Ginrei figure.

It is a fat shame that Manga is really a bunch of ghosts now. They did a great job with Giant robo and I really wished they were able to do it themselves. I've heard that Media Blasters has had good reps but honestly that doesn't sway me one bit. They're track record with discs and translations just doesn't satisfy me in regards to Giant Robo.

As I recall, whoever was behind the set (and I believe the creators as well) of Giant Robo absolutely adored the Manga dub of the show. It was so good that they wanted to include it in the definitive collection for the show.

Silkworm, Right Stuf is always having publisher specific deals. Which is why my anime collection has gotten insane over the past year. When they did the ADV I grabbed all of Kino's Journey for cheap. When the did Geneon/Pioneer, I jumped all over Last Exile and Gungrave 1&2 (which is suprisingly VERY good). The Right Stuf is my number one anime DVD shopping spot. Like I said above now is a good time to grab the Berserk box set and the first 9 discs of Twelve Kingdoms (VERY good series).

Heavy Liquid, I had the chance to grab that box set a few years back, but the price and drove me away and I wasn't sure if it was region free. Manga used to be the bomb and brought over some cool stuff. I just think that when the anime marketplace skyrocketed (thanks in large part to Cartoon Network), they weren't adequately prepared to deal with the shift. Probaly lost a lot of licenses to other up and comers..but I digress. I'm just glad we're getting Giant Robo, and it wasn't forgotten. ADV is also procurring a lot of older titles to supplement their portofolio. Giant Robo should be a real treat!
