Godfall Developer May Have Shut Down

Counterplay Games, the developer behind Godfall, may have quietly shut down, according to the LinkedIn profile of an employee from another studio. The company has been quiet since the release of its loot-heavy hack-and-slash PS5 launch title, making no game announcements since the 2020 title. Now it seems that the studio may be no more, as the Godfall developers seem to have disbanded.

Despite being the first title announced for the PlayStation 5, Counterplay's lone title never made much of an impression on gamers. Even following a massive update in 2021, Godfall suffered from repetitive gameplay and a story that largely fell flat. As such, it didn't sell well and struggled to maintain a significant player base. Its reception wasn't entirely negative, but its poor overall performance may have been too much for its studio to withstand.

The news of the developer's shutdown comes from a LinkedIn post made by an employee of Jackalyptic Games and shared by PlayStation Lifestyle. According to the note, Jackalyptic was collaborating with Counterplay on a new title, but the project didn't make it to 2025 and Counterplay Games subsequently "disbanded." Counterplay has yet to make any statement on the topic, but the wording of the post makes it seem like it would've been a relatively recent event, with the developer possibly disbanding around the end of 2024. It's also worth noting that Counterplay hasn't revealed much since bringing Godfall to Xbox on April 7, 2022, so a silent disbandment isn't necessarily shocking.

First announced PS5 game ever, we present you the new genre ...drum roll... Looter Slasher!

Game's dead the moment they came up with this hippie name.

Man, I had totally forgotten about this one.

What was the DEI one with car combat… Destruction All-Stars?

Edit: yesss lol. Jim Ryan, you crazy bastard.

I was given this game as a present when I got the PS5, I thought it was God of War, I took it too Gamestop to trade in and noticed it was a different game but traded it in anyway. :)

Godfall was god awful. I remember a bunch of people hyping the shit out of it, only to be forgotten a week later. If I'm not mistaken it was a launch title on PS5/Series X/S.

I wondered what would've happened if Sony partnered with them and let them use God of War characters/assets; like an off-shoot multiplayer version of the ip...

I think it probably would've done way but oh well, we'll never know.

Duelyst was an amazing game design that was badly mishandled from the business side of things; it should never have been F2P, let alone the predatory F2P it ended up being.

But those days are long past. I'm not going to grieve much for Counterplay.

I had this day 1. Felt cool for a while, but it wasn't anything amazing. Lol I remember my wife posted a pic of my boxed PS5 with Godfall sitting on the box. I was like, "please don't show this to anyone".
