Well, we finally got reservations. We are staying at the Hotel Listel Shinjuku. Seems convient from a transportation standpoint. It is right next to Shibuya which also sounds like a place we will be at a bit... overall pretty happy and won't come anywhere near breaking the bank ($380/person).

So I have a flight and place to stay over there now... total cost so far has been $1120 for hotel and air... that is as much as I was thinking air alone was going to cost me... pretty psyched about that.

we aren't going to plan anything major.. I have to pick up some hello kitty stuff and take pictures for my daughter, would like to see the Imperial Palace and Miyazki Museum, and a bunch of gardens.. etc.

So where do you pick up manga there? Is it all over at newsstands or is it located in comic book shop-equivalents? not too worried about anime.. actually more curious to tune into some either early in the morning or late at night on tv.. umm.. how do internet cafe's work?

and... yeah, that should be all off the top of my head.. thanks for everyone's help in my posts...

where don't you pick up manga is the more appropriate question. book stores, dept stores, convienience stores. if you dont mind second hand I would recommend a store like Book-Off (it's a chain). Very inexpensive manga, lots of stuff is 100 yen per volume. keep in mind second hand manga, books, DVDs and games in Japan = pretty much new most of the time.

anime, well check the TV schedules before you go.

Every bookstore will have a large manga section. If you're really interested, though, you should go to the Mandarake shops, off the Nakano station -- several stores filled with manga, games, dojinshi, cosplay accessories, old pop-culture antiques, and so forth. Hours of browsing and very cheap prices.

Book off is also cheap, but that's a humdrum chain store, whereas Mandarake is totally an otaku paradise.

Anime, check the Japan Times.

Internet cafes and manga kissa charge like 300 yen for the first hour and 100 yen for every hour afterwards. Most also have deals where you can spend all night reading manga, watching DVDs, playing PS2 games etc for 1200 yen, which is good for when you miss the last train out of Shinjuku.

As far as manga kissa go (which I am more famliar with), you go in, choose which seat you want, choose smoking or non, then pay for your time in advance.

Well, there are tons of manga kissa nowadays. So many, in fact, that manga sales went down 6 percent or something like that last year and the industry more or less blamed it on manga kissa and Book off :lol
