Good FPS games for non-FPS players?

I'm not really a FPS player AT ALL, but I decided I've ignored this genre for too long and should give it a serious chance. Can someone help recommend some FPS that are suitable for non-hardcore FPS players, who just want to get their feet wet, and still have an enjoyable experience?

Some of the factors I'm looking for:

1. easy, simplistic controls even for FPS newbies.
2. Not too difficult
3. Can hold the attention of even a non-hardcore FPS player. This implies some sort
of good storyline or different styles of play.
4. A good single player mode. I don't want to have to simply jump into online play and
get humiliated right away.

BTW here are some FPS I tried before but really couldn't get into: Unreal Tournament 2003, Serious Sam, Halo, Quake 2

Ahh just get Half-Life 2.

Maybe Painkiller. It's not bad. Doom 3 is good in my opinion but it seems not many agree with me. :lol

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Normal difficulty isn't too hard for the FPS newbie, not too exhausting in length, and an interesting story/action-RPG element.

metroid prime would fit that bill except it's not really easy and has hardcore elements that come from it's heritage as a 2d game. Morrowind... it's an FP RPG. It controls a lot like an FPS, but it requires less reflexive skill and has very deep story elements.

maybe the jumping flash series on ps1. they are first person platformers, with a bit of shooting thrown in. Doom and Doom 2 are a bit simpler to control than modern fps because you don't have to aim, but they certainly aren't easy.

FPS is really a hardcore kind of genre, especially now. If none of the above fit, you may be out of luck. You may want to give the half life games a try. the are a bit deeper than your average FPS, especially in the story department.

you got a problem with the greatest game of all time? that would be odd, especially since he asked for an FPS with simplified controls... you don't have to aim in MP... it seems to fit almost all his requirements except for being easy.

Dude, it wasn't meant to be taken literally...it was just another way of saying this is the most obvious answer. There are plenty of other good FPS's beside HL2

Halo. hahaha, yea, I know you're not allowed to like it on GAF, but the first game is so popular because of how well the controls work and how they feel. It's made a ton of FPS fans just like older series like Doom and Goldeneye did. The plot is sci-fi trash boilerplate, but Half-Life 2 is better atmosphere than it is story.

ah nevermind, you didn't get into Halo. Good luck!

I have a problem with games that practically beat the game for you. :lol

mp is plenty challenging, just in a different way.. Omega pirate laughs at many gamers feeble attempts to defeat him.

Halo 2, you don't even really have to aim cause of the lame ass auto aim and poor collision detection. Seriously though get Serious Sam 2 for serious.

I'm not sure exactly why I have such a problem with FPS games. I don't think it has to do with the 3D movement or controls, since I actually love 3D flight sims and free roaming shooters. Perhaps it's that I have poor spatial-memorization skills or whatever. I tend to get lost in mazes easily. Or maybe I have video game claustrophobia.

Halo then Halo 2- Xbox
OR
Half Life 2- PC, Xbox soon. But get it on PC ;)

Metroid Prime is more like Zelda from a FP view- no skill to it, the only challenging bits are beating bosses and it's more like puzzles. It's a gorgeous game though.

Other than that it kind of turns into a mess of mediocrity after that, with some standouts like Riddick.

well then scratch metroid...

sounds like you need an FPS that takes place in open environments... There were a lot of levels in halo like that.. isn't farcry like that? It seems like most indoor sections in that game are pretty limited from what i've seen. Tribes is kind of like that but it's pure multiplayer, and IMO it's overrated anyway.

the first ghost recon (the only GR game i ever played) had open environments and it was a pure FPS, at least on pc's.

Ok thanks, I think I will give Farcry (Instincts?) a try.....

Good choice, just note that from what I hear the original Farcry gets pretty difficult towards the end..(I didn't personally get that far)

Serious Sam is very straight forward. but imho if you could not get into Halo you should give up on this genre

Actually you should try Halo 2 on the rumble training playlists.
My very casuals almost non-gamer neighbors are now addicted to it

I wouldn't agree with Metroid Prime as a recommend.
Controls are not exactly your standard fare FPS...in fact, it's somewhat limiting.

Guys, what is the basic skill set required in FPS games? Aiming. If aiming is not the basic skill required in the game, it cannot qualify as a FPS. So while Metroid Prime is an amazing game (if you play it with the hints turned off), it's not a FPS.

I agree with Half-Life as a recommendation, but I would play the 1st one before the 2nd since you seem to be interested in plots. If it has the same effect on you as it did on me, you'll forget about the old graphics.

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is awesome, has adventure elements to break up the FPS action, has great atmosphere, etc. I've never played the 1st one, but, once again, you might want to do that for the story, which is good. And I'm not really a Star Wars fan.

Half Life 1 & 2 is the best choice.

Metroid Prime is a superb game, but it plays fundamentally differently than other FPS, so it is not a good choice as an introduction to the genre.

The first two that came to my mind were Serious Sam and Halo, but you shot those down at the end of the post. Soo.. I'm thinking that it's maybe just not the genre for you.

Geist is easy for non-FPS.

No weapon collection, no changing of weapons, and no ever running out of ammo.

All you do is auto-reload, haha.

And its not hard as a FPS... cause its uh... a First Person Adventure, ha.

:lol:lol:lol guy, I'd say the main skill in a FPS is quick thinking.

also: head out to walmart and buy the Doom coolection (Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom) and then use jDoom to play them

edit: coolection....cute

fuck spelling
