Good free online IT courses for an entry-level tech support role

I'm looking for an IT apprenticeship at the moment, but my IT skills have dulled in recent years. I've got a bunch of specialist books (the 1000+ page plus ones), but I find it difficult to absorb the information (I don't know how people do it).
I need something which actively tests what I have learned. Thing is I don't have the money for paid courses and certifications. I was thinking about looking for some free online courses to help me get up to speed, but I don't know where I should be looking.

Does anyone know which online platforms I should check out?

"Entry level tech support" is pretty vague. I would emphasize your customer service skills when applying for these roles, it will give you a slight edge.

If possible, figure out what CMS or platform they work with on a regular basis (Wordpress, Cisco, Plesk, etc) and then go to their website and study their official training course (almost all of them offer it, even the smaller ones). Among your prospective jobs, they work with Linux or Windows, or both? Try to sharpen your skills in command line for those, you'll sound smarter even if you don't actually use it much.

I did a stint of hiring and attending job fairs for my company, interviewing a few 100 people and taking applications from a few 100 more.

Perhaps first-line technical support would have been better., I've got an IT background, but haven't kept up with things for almost a decade so I see myself as a beginner, even if on paper I have some IT skills. Thanks for the tips.
 
Depends, there's help desk which is pretty entry level. I know google got some courses, it just depends on what part because IT is pretty wide.
