I did something incredibly stupid today and managed to blast out the portable laptop HD I use to caddy data from work to home. Let's just say I formatted the wrong drive. I'm presently using a tool called File Scavenger to restore the data, and it is seeing alot of the data, but obviously some of it is going to register as bad and be beyond recovery. Are there any particular tools that excel at this? Any Linux-based bootable solutions, etc? My pr0n, MP3s, crucial death-threat letters depend on it! Thanks.

If you can plug the drive into a windows box, I know of a good win32 based application for recovering data. I was able to use it to recover all the data off my sister's pc after the hard drive mysteriously declared it needed to be formatted to be accessed.

It's called Handy Recovery (www.handyrecovery.com) and you will need to get the full version, but you can see how effective it is with the trial - it will scan the drive and show you what files it can recover and what chance they have of being recovered (excellent, poor, etc). The trial will show you which files are recoverable but only lets you recover one file a day, so if you can see it is showing a lot of your files, get the full version and grab your data. Worked great for me.

Oh i used Handy Recovery 2.0 a while back when I lost my backup with all my concert photos. Worked like a charm. I was in such a panic that I bought it and didn't do much research, but it did the job. Very easy to use as well.

Thanks for the advice. The 'File Scavenger' program I mentioned actually wound up working pretty well. Took awhile to recover all of the files, a few files' names were truncated, and some long-since deleted files were restored, but the important thing was that most of data is restored. This could've been a pretty shitty day - my entire MP3 collection was on that drive.
