Goodfellas released 30 years ago today!

Can you believe it? I first watched Goodfellas on VHS when I was kid and consider it to be an instant classic. It's actually one of my favorite movies of all time (second favorite after Independence Day). Probably because it was the first gangster/crime drama that I remember seeing but also because I thought Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci were really fun to watch on screen. A genuinely great movie from beginning to end.

What did you think of Goodfellas? Do you also consider it among your favorites?

It's not bad or anything but I tend to feel Casino's run time and never finish it.

How's The Irishman?
The Irishman was good in theory but not quite what I was expecting in practice. Some CGI that was used was distracting, along with a certain scene where De Niro has to play the hard ass. It was almost comical. Had to watch it in two sittings which I normally don't do. I watched all of the original 'It' without moving. They could have benefited from a competent editor imo.

Bummer. I'll just keep Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street in the rotation.

A few months ago I saw it had just started on HBO or whatever and thought I would watch the beginning as it’s been a while. Well 3 hours later... Goodfellas is a top 10, maybe top 5 movie of all time. Still brilliant.

If you catch the opening shot, you are pretty much committed for the ride. I still think the ending overstays its' welcome and is far less interesting than the rest of the movie, but nothing is perfect.

I remember watching it in the theaters and not being prepared of how great it was! I'm fascinated by 60s mobsters/rat pack kinda stuff. Also mesmerized by how the timeline blends into the 70s. Gonna watch my dvd later tonight!

I saw it about five years ago in the cinema for the 25th anniversary. Like many people, my first viewing of this was on a rented VHS tape that seriously on the way out and showed many signs of tape deterioation. I remember buying it on DVD and it was the awful flipper disc where you had to get up and flip the disc half way through the film.

But when I saw it in the cinema I really gained a whole new appreciation for it. I have always loved the film, but something about seeing it with an audience is just something that home video can never replicate. It just felt amazing. You could tell who hadn't seen the film before when it came to the "funny how?" scene and you could feel the tension slowly crank up in the room.

I would recommend The Departed as well if you haven't seen it.

I've yet to watch Casino. It was on my to-watch list at some point but I forgot about it. Looks pretty good from the trailer.
Casino is good too. Although I'd say I liked the first 3/4 of the movie more than the final parts. Beware, it's a 3 hour movie.

I feel the running time for Casino too, but I actually ended up watching Irishman twice back when it came out. Maybe like a week apart.

The CGI distracted the hell out of me on the first watch, so I turned it on again to see if I'd still be bothered. I still was a little bit, yet also still ended up becoming so engrossed that I watched the whole damn thing again. Quite a good movie even with the strange CGI decision.

Casino is basically the spiritual sequel to Goodfellas. If Goodfellas is your second favorite movie, then definitely give it a watch. It's nearly just as good.
Definitely. There's a lot of good older movies I've been meaning to watch. Come to think of it, Infernal Affairs was another one. I haven't seen much Hong Kong cinema other than Hard Boiled (also really good).

I watched Casino for the first time not that long ago and liked it a lot. It’s excellent, very entertaining.

I love Goodfellas. I have seen it at least a dozen times. I still remember Pesci getting iced when he thought he was gonna be a made man...but he murdered a made man whom he did not know was a made man.

Also Lorraine Bracco. I was in love with her. Call me strange, but I wish she were my mafia wife.

My main problem is outside of Samuel Jackson their arent enough blacks in the movie. Lack of gays and trans also.

Not enough diversity. DeNerio should of been black. Ray should of been gay and Pesci should of been a trans women. You know like the real mafia.
I know you're joking but I would rather not have to read about diversity or gender all the time.
