no silly, not in that way, because that would mean losing millions of dollars

Even though SOPA’s odds of worming through into law are looking increasingly slim, it’s still a threat, as is PIPA, its sister bill in the Senate –
and websites are lining up to combat it. After Reddit announced it would be blacking out on January 18 to protest the bill, a host of other
organizations followed suit, culminating in Wikipedia’s announcement that it, too, would shut down tomorrow. Today, Google said it would
lend its voice to the cause – but not with a full-fledged blackout. One of its employees also outlined how websites can blackout in a search-friendly way.

Tomorrow, some of the most valuable virtual real estate on the ‘Net – Google’s home page – will include a link to a page that outlines Google’s
opposition to SOPA and PIPA. It’s not a blackout, but given Google’s giganticness – my grandmother actually calls Google the Internet, in a naïve
rather than ironic way – it’s a strong move nonetheless.

"Like many businesses, entrepreneurs and web users, we oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign
rogue websites without asking American companies to censor the Internet," a Google spokeswoman told CNET. "So tomorrow we will be joining
many other tech companies to highlight this issue on our US home page."

Meanwhile, Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Pierre Far explained how websites who want to temporarily shut down – “Perhaps for server
maintenance or as political protest” – could do so without adversely affecting their search rankings. Basically, you’ll want to use a 503 HTTP
status code, but if you want more details, be sure to check out Far’s post on Google+. (Note, also, that he posted the information on his
personal account, so it isn’t officially sanctioned by the search giant.)

Twitter's CEO, on the other hand, says calls to shut down that service are "just silly."

not even a little pop up like the chrome advertisement, just a link, but its better than nothing, and its google

I'd have preferred something you have to click through or something on all results pages, but this is better than nothing.

Oh man, I thought Google was actually going to do a blackout. Imagine how incredible that would be.

Misleading thread title is misleading.

If Google really were to shut down tomorrow... holy shit...

Good, this is what they should have done and nobody could have reasonably expected more. Pretty stupid reaction by Twitter too.

The twitter CEO 'silly' thing was taken out of context completely. He actually supports the blackout 100%.

The context doesn't change it that much. He's still saying he thinks it would be foolish to shut down his company over "single issue national politics." He's just not saying it's foolish of others to do so. Not following the logic there anyway.

That would be bad, it would literally shut down the internet. People already know that the Google logo changes on special occasions so they'll probably notice a link stating the problems with sopa and pipa.

Just a link? Pft. I don't think people will notice a tiny link somewhere on the home page. It should be a doodle or something a bit more in your face and noticeable.

Imagine if the Google logo is just one big censorship bar. People would certainly notice that.

Do people actually go to the Google homepage anymore to do anything besides look at what the logo looks like on special days?

I'd assume most people just type into a browser's search box.

not everyone is a refined, efficient internet user. i'd guess most people aren't, even people in their 20s.

It needs to be a doodle!

It's so blatantly obvious that I don't understand why they don't do it.

They've made their logo damn near unrecognizable in the past. Surely they can make some logo about this POS legislation and link to info about it... So obvious!

This is the way to do it.

Good job Google!

Facebook?

EDIT: Oh I thought is was a doodle. It needs to be a doodle, a link is too boring, people won't care.

I'd like to think i'm pretty knowledgeable and efficient when it comes to computers but for some reason i don't know if its out of habit or what but i always open a fresh tab with the Google homepage for every search.

I use it as my "home" page, and default new tab page.

It's true that Google.com is basically the homepage of the internet

No, most people type "Google" into the search box and then type the web address they want to go to into Google.

Still think sites need to realize what if it's worth a blackout or not. I really don't think Reddit going dark will do anything. What Google is doing could.

Seen people do it on Chrome. Hurts my soul.

I do it on Chrome. I take pleasure in hurting your soul.
