Wild gorillas seen to use tools

Gorillas have been seen for the first time using simple tools to perform tasks in the wild, researchers say.

Scientists described how gorillas in forests in Congo used sticks to test the depth of muddy water and to cross swampy areas.

The head of the US and German team said the discovery would cast new light on how humans and other species evolved.

Captive gorillas have been known to use tools, but scientists say they are merely copying their human captors.

Pretty cool :)

Chimpanzees have long been known to use tools. In their case, it's sticks to collect termites from nests.

If I'm not mistaken, sea otters also use tools.

some birds use rocks to crack the shells of eggs belonging to different animals so they can eat the yolk and stuff.

Ravens in Japan drop nuts into intersections and wait on power lines for cars to run them over. When the lights turn red, they jump down and grab their lunch.

Chimps also use sticks to collect honey. They cover their faces with their hands and poke and the bees' nest until they have some honey on the stick and then suck it off.

I saw this documentary once where a small fish learned to swin upside down in order to "grab" a floating leaf and to use it as cover from birds. damn cool.

Being a biologist is so fucking easy, when you think your funding is going to get cut just make up that an animal did something 'interesting' and hey presto, 10 more years of dossing around.
