Gradius V is pretty darn hard in 2p :(

Was gaming tonight with a friend and we decided to go through my SHmup collection to kill some time and have fun. When we got to Gradius V it was like "...this is >_<".

Now I understand sharing continues as that's natural in all arcade style games, but you SHARE OPTIONS!!?. WTF!? Have all Gradius games been like that in 2p? I'd never played 2p before in a Gradius game so that was pretty unexpected. One player having 3 options and the other one stuck with one option really sucks for the one option guy if both players aren't necessarily acting as team. It was :(

Then we played Espgaluda in 2p and everything was right with the world again :)

The sharing options special was the biggest mistake of Gradius V IMO. They should've restricted it somehow but sharing 4 options between two players is a bit much.

First of all, AFAIK, this is the first Gradius with 2P on screen. You usually take it in turns.
Salamander had 2P, though, and you split the options in that too.

The game would be way too easy with 8 options on screen :P You just have to make sure you play with someone decent. It's not really a game for frolicking about.

Yeah it's a shame how much more difficult the game becomes in 2 players for me, I keep losing track of my vic viper and sometimes looking at the other one thinking it's mine, doing that for as little as a second or two will most likely cost you a life... I prefer playing the game by myself :(

The lord british is red right? How do you lose track of it when you can tell between the blue shots all over the screen and your normally blue ship?

I believe 8 options in total would:

a) potentially make the game too easy
b) potentially cause slowdowns since those lasers are pretty intense
c) potentially make the game to hard because you wouldn't be able to see shit

Wise decision in my opinion. Don't know how a and c go together though!

Don't know, maybe because my TV is small? (20")

I agree with all of the above. Two competant players with 4 options each would be unstoppable.
