Absolutely nothing like what you guys listen to, but I think it's great music. A friend introduced them to me a while ago and I've just recently started listening to them a decent bit.

To describe them best:
Their records are renowned for drawing together disparate threads of folk and pop music, while their shows are a storm of powerful singing, driving rhythms and soaring melody. Critics are often at a loss to describe the unique appeal of the band, who have built a strong and enduring career by combining the traditional music of their isolated Newfoundland home with a myriad of pop influences. CMJ New Music focused on "the band's rich vocal harmonies" based around four part singing which ranges from the sophistication of the Beach Boys, to the bellow of sailor's shanties. Dirty Linen raved about "the best party band that ever picked up a fiddle", while the Washington Post described "an explosively joyful noise". Great Big Sea themselves refuse to be put in any boxes.
If that sounds interesting to you, check them out. "Up" is a great start, but I haven't heard much else.

I'll add that they have a very 'Celtic' sound.

Dear god...as a resident of Eastern Canada, let me say that perhaps its overexposure, but my appreciated of Great Big Sea died at the Age of like 12. Up was released around that time, and is generally a very upbeat and celtic sound. It gets old after overexposure, but their more recent albums? Nonevents. They are uninspired, lacking any real personality and have made them into little but a disappointment that only lame people care about.

Hmmmm that sucks. OK, if anyone's still reading this, keep it to "Up" and nothing else.

Then again, you're the same fuckface that hates on Sydney Crosby because of overexposure. You Maritimers can't be trusted. ;)

Fuckface? Them's fightin' words. Although, it may be apt here, since I have a track record for hating celebrities purely for overexposure.

But seriously, they've changed. They actually use real drums now, they're more of a light rock band with a slightly celtic feel, rather than a celtic act with crossover appeal. They sold out.

I blame Crosby.
