I'm not sure what to think of this and the art style looks a bit rough.

I've seen movies I've enjoyed with worse art style and movies I've hated with better. Going to come down to the story I think.
It's a prequel to a franchise that hasn't had a release in 30-somthing years (New movie please) So I'm not really expecting much with this one story wise.

I give it a solid MAYBE.

This looks like it was supposed to be released in the late 90s, but producers thought it looked terrible, and then it was shelved for 20+ years.
Also not sure about the story... a wizard guy and chinese vampires!? eehhh

Curious how they expand the lore beyond "ignore these seemingly arbitrary rules at your peril!". Are mogwai a magical weapon for genocide on your enemies? A curse from the gods? An alien bioweapon? A cuddly benevolent race that went horribly awry when taken out of their habitat?

And I have learned that it is usually a HUGE RED FLAG when the voice cast is the most prominent part of the trailer for an animated film.

Even with Joe Dante involved this worries me. It looks like a Chinese myth tale given the gremlins hook just to sell it to old westerners. I've tried and failed to get my kids into gremlins several times.

And didn't the inventor dad dub him Gizmo since he, you know, invented Gizmos?

As a Gremlins fan yea this is very meh looking at best. Also huge blow not having Howie do Gizmo's voice.

Not like this.gif

I've been waiting for the third Gremlins movie for more than 20 years and as always Warner bros disappoints... Even to disappoint, it behind Disney for a change.

Its coming on May 23. I'm not sure what to think of this and the art style looks a bit rough. They should just make a new movie.

I refuse to believe those YouTube comments are real. No one in real life whats to see a low-budget, Grimlins/Kung-Fu, CGI cartoon!

So I got something to tell you all....

I think Gremlins 2 is the better movie.
I don't consider the sequel canon at all. Its not a good movie.

I'm suprised they haven't made a third movie in recent years. They could sell so much merchandise. They must have noticed all the Baby Yoda toys.

Gremlins was one of the most original movies for its time. I loved the Christmas setting in the small little town. The sounds and colors of the original movie were really good and its almost like an introduction to scary movies for kids.
The cast was really good and it has all the makings for a new movie.
Maybe this cartoon is the test market to see if they can get todays kids on board?

The question is, what would we want in a third movie? Reboot with horrible cg gremlins? Continuation of the original after 35 years? More horror or more comedy?

I love both movies but my nod has to go to the original. To this day I still get a smile on my face every time I see a commercial for powered stair lifts. Poor Mrs Deagle.

Good question. I think the horror/comedy combo CAN work, you just have to get writers that are not obsessed with self referential and cynical "humor". This isn't "Scream" meta nonsense, it's a monster movie that can have distinct comedic elements and should be rooted in a grounded protagonist with understandable motivations and relationships.

The gremlins themselves can offer up plenty of slapstick, ESPECIALLY when using puppets, that element of removal from reality yet being a physical thing is what makes them be able to do all the sight gags and physical comedy. A photo realistic CGI gremlin wouldn't have that capability, I don't think. Baby Yoda largely works on the same principle.

The issue is whether to rehash the first film or to introduce too many "rules" for the mogwai/gremlins. I need to watch Gremlins 2 again because I have few memories of that film to recall if they added to the lore or not. But I think you could do a soft reboot, maybe have Zach and Phoebe back for an extended cameo, so long as the neighborhood has interesting characters for the gremlins to interact with.

There's a Grease show of the Pink Ladies too on Paramount+..looks like original ideas are getting harder and harder to come by.

Just add it to the pile of IPs from my youth that are being mercilessly slaughtered in the name of finding that rare nostalgia hit.
