The question is, what would we want in a third movie? Reboot with horrible cg gremlins? Continuation of the original after 35 years? More horror or more comedy?.
Good question. I think the horror/comedy combo CAN work, you just have to get writers that are not obsessed with self referential and cynical "humor". This isn't "Scream" meta nonsense, it's a monster movie that can have distinct comedic elements and should be rooted in a grounded protagonist with understandable motivations and relationships.
The gremlins themselves can offer up plenty of slapstick, ESPECIALLY when using puppets, that element of removal from reality yet being a physical thing is what makes them be able to do all the sight gags and physical comedy. A photo realistic CGI gremlin wouldn't have that capability, I don't think. Baby Yoda largely works on the same principle.
The issue is whether to rehash the first film or to introduce too many "rules" for the mogwai/gremlins. I need to watch Gremlins 2 again because I have few memories of that film to recall if they added to the lore or not. But I think you could do a soft reboot, maybe have Zach and Phoebe back for an extended cameo, so long as the neighborhood has interesting characters for the gremlins to interact with.
