"GTA4 may launch on Xbox 360 and PS3 Simultaneously"

imo it makes sense to have gta launch simultaneously on ps3 and 360, there's a profitable market for the game on both consoles.

the article continues to speculate about sony's recent developer acquisitions:
http://www.gamepro.com/sony/ps3/games/news/51384.shtml
...This situation could also help explain why Sony is rapidly acquiring talented third-party development studios like Guerilla Games (makers of Killzone) and Zipper Interactive (developers of the SOCOM games). Such acquisitions could help bolster the PS3's exclusive software lineup in the event that Grand Theft Auto 4 is not a PS3-exclusive...

Why? Because I ask a legit question? Because I don't happen to be caught up in the fad of violence that is GTA? I will remember that having an opinion and asking legit questions make me a moron, thanks for helping me out with that.

No, you're a moron because you ask "People still care about GTA?" like it's a fad that has come and gone without realizing the major sales it's still generating and the impact it still has on the entire gaming industry.

Your post being legit or not isn't in question, the fact that you ask it in light of 15 million plus sales of the series is. To answer your original post: YES

Eh, I don't keep up with game sales, I just play them, hey how much did San Andreas sell, I am sure you can help me find that out because I am oh so curious.

Is GTA really the biggest selling franchise? Damn what has happened to gaming?

this info also came from gamepro which was quoting business week, so to me it sounds like more than fanboy wishes, though is still speculation:

What about the other killer app, Grand Theft Auto?

Publisher Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) hasn't announced its plans for the next installment in this series. But according to one source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Take-Two still has the option to release the next Grand Theft Auto on both new platforms simultaneously, rather than exclusively for PlayStation. That could effectively kill Sony's ability to drive console sales with that title, something it did with the Grand Theft Auto games for the PlayStation 2.

In general, both Microsoft and Sony will have to develop exclusive titles internally this time around. The majors, including Electronic Arts (ERTS) and Activision, say they are loath to sign exclusive deals, instead opting to release games simultaneously across platforms to maximize sales.

And it's not like the early days, when top hits like Super Mario Brothers or Sonic the Hedgehog sold exclusively for the Nintendo or Sega system, and provided compelling reasons to buy one console over the other. Third-party-published games make up the majority of sales on consoles today (last December, they accounted for 90% of sales on the current generation of consoles, according to NPD). That means it's going to be harder to for Microsoft and Sony to differentiate their game portfolios this time around.
sounds like someone's after some $$$.

really!

If Take Two is burning cash wouldn't you assume they'd like to recoup it any way possible? I don't think staying exclusive to the PS3 would net them more profit than by porting the game to other platforms. I'd also hazard a guess that such a deal would cost Sony quite a large sum of money, money that would probably go into purchasing development studios if unused.

Your question backfired. Just live with it.

I thought it was already known that they were working on both PS3 and 360 versions simultaneously? And that they may give the PS3 a timed exclusive on it? I could see them releasing on both platforms, especially with their money troubles.

p.s. GTA is getting freaking old. In a perfect world they wouldn't release another one.

As popular as GTA will continue to be, I don't think it'll be the biggest game next gen like it was this. The biggest games from every generation (almost) always continue to have great sales in later gens, but something new will come along to replace it as the BIG game/s of the generation.

I don't know what it'll be, that's the point, but as great as GTA exclusivity would be to a system, what will really make a difference will be who has that next huge seller.

It wasn't going to be a PS3 exclusive, at one time GTA was exclusive to the PS2 and then TT/Rockstar and Sony worked out some kind of deal that allowed them to put it on other platforms. So that pretty much showed they aren't going to put it on 1 system only other than for a time exclusive.

Oh I see, so Sony/Rockstar negotiated the deal for the whole series instead of on a per game basis and then worked out a timed exclusivity clause for each title. If I read your post correctly that deal is not longer applicable and Take Two can do what they please or the same contract is in effect and it'll probably be a timed exclusive for the PS3 for (x) amount of months?

How it started was that after GTA3 was released and became a success, Sony quickly signed a deal with TT/Rockstar that'd keep any GTA game released exclusive to the PS2. After VC was released then TT/Rockstar wanted to release it on the Xbox to make more money and they worked out some deal with Sony that'd allow that to happen. No one really knows what that deal was though.

wouldn't they have made money just sticking with Sony though? </shitstir>
They have and they did. I think they ended up like bandits with the Sony contract and timed exclusivity deal. The question is if they would have made even more money if they released it on the Xbox alongside the PS3 release? I think this directly correlates with what's going on at the moment with GTA4. One also has to wonder what kind of money is being thrown about to keep GTA exclusive to either platform and how much would 4 - 6 months would cost either company.

This situation could also help explain why Sony is rapidly acquiring talented third-party development studios like Guerilla Games (makers of Killzone)

I always kinda thought that was why Microsoft got Real-Time Worlds and got a deal with Mistwalker, 'cause they couldn't get GTA exclusive or Dragon Quest.

Anyways, Guerilla Games certainly wouldn't do shit for lacking GTA exclusive.

It is certainly not the biggest ever right now (There is Mario for that, Doom also...), but it is certainly one of the 2 biggest franchise right now with Halo... Each over 5 millions units sold.

Numbers:
28 GTA for total sales over 25.5 millions units
GTA: SA on PS2 is 5.8 millions units as reached and more GTA3 and GTA: VC

The "gaming fans" from the 80s/early 90s bought it.

Didn't psm state that it was exclusive to the ps3? Also wasn't there word out that the game couldn't fit on a DVD and that was one of the reasons it was ps3 exclusive? Am I thinking of a different game?

Who's to say it won't be on multiple DVD's on the 360?

I hear you can harness the power of human energy to read the second disc by balancing it on your head while disc 1 is in the drive.

Never been interested in the series myself, but I'd like to see what they can do with the series on next gen hardware. As the genre gets more popular, things that made GTA successful are becoming standard features so they need to keep adding ideas to keep it fresh, IMO. If they can do that then I'm interested

OT but what's happened to the forums recently? Where did this sudden influx of trolls and fanboys come from?

My Ignore List is getting overworked here! I'm having to add 3-4 people a day just to keep the forums readable

Yep they will launch simultaneously.

First on PS3 and 1 jear later on XBox 360.

It will launch in the launchwindow ;)
