Guinness World Records: Duke Nukem Forever is the current record for the longest development period for a video game

Technically? Perhaps, but ALL of Rockstar's studios were still focused on Red Dead Redemption 2 until 2018, so this isn't exactly that fair.

This.

Development on GTA 6 didn't start until they wrapped on Read Dead 2

It's not saying GTA VI has the record. It's telling you the record is held by DNF at 14 years, 43 days.

GTA VI is at about 11 years. Star Citizen is closer to the record at 12 or so.

Going guns blazing first play through 5 stars send in the military, certainly will complete the story there's also multiplayer, there's also DLC in the works I believe GTA VI South America

Depends on how you define development. And with Duke Nukem Forever, you've got the Ship of Theseus question. If every aspect of a game is replaced over time from conception to release, is it really the same game?

To give it a book analogy: yes, its the same manuscript, going through multiple drafts, even if the authors change over time.

:pie_eyeroll:.

Now imagine the game being a disappointment.
Killing hookers will never be a disappointment sir (especially after they have already rendered their services) lolz aside, that makes me wonder how they'll treat the free agency. I love so much of RDR2, but I fucking hated the writing, the forced narrative on the character's um "morals" that really hurt that free agency to be the outlaw you wanted to be (or depending on the player, I had hookers in mind) With Jason having this love interest, would they even allow this?

Imagine playing a story mission where he lets her know she is the only one for him and saves her from some gang etc and then you are back in the free world roaming before the next mission and like "let me go to the stripe club real quick" lol

When you give the player this level of freedom, I feel many times it does make the story feel less authentic in a way.

Careful now, you'll ruffle some feathers here.
lol , i feel Star Citizen shouldn't even be eligible for that if its development had no real end date, like if the point was to keep getting backers to keep giving them money with no real actual release date, would that even count? We get into the area of MMOs at that point, like wouldn't some on going MMO or something then be eligible for it?

I backed it and wanted it to succeed. Starfield and No Man Sky has given me that space joy and I have no desire to wait for Star Citizen or care about any actual release, they missed the mark and that ship has sailed imho.

Eh, don't look to stupid institutions like guinnes world records for real game info, lol @ counting DKF as if it's in dev from 1997 to 2011's release when it was obviously completely canned and way later a different game with the same name was developed from scratch.

Anyway, hardly a feat, Routine was initially announced in August 2012 for release in spring 2013 and we're only getting it this December.

Let's count Beyond Good and Evil 2 then, first announced in 2008 and no end in sight.

??????

Isn't the tweet talking about Duke Nukem, not GTA VI ?

Like, they're very clearly stating DNF's announcement to release time.

Way back when I used to track video game stocks (I even owned EA and Activision long time ago around the global financial crisis), the company's profits would always be skewed to GTA releases. Even right now. Company loses tons of money lately. It might get propped up by GTA Online or RDR2, but most years the company has lousy profits making low profits or lose money.

It reads almost like damage contol. Also :

Outside graphics/production value and the sandbox (which I think Rockstar will deliver), the real test will be in narrative and game design.

But what game holds the Guinness world record for the longest in development on a 30ft LED screen whilst being flown around vegas by helicopter ?

Also this topic is bullshit.

A much more better graphically looking, detailed, condensed, animated, processed, and bigger sized land mass with a bigger story and features compared to V. It makes sense.

Sure there might be other games who took longer to come out but as far as actual development/having the game being worked on, I'll say GTA VI is the one. Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 would come close but I doubt they'll reach the same level of actual development time.

My guess is once everything is released the top largest/longest games would be

GTA VI > Elder Scrolls > Fallout 5 > Witcher 4 > Something else > Big Switch 2 Zelda game.

I'm the time since GTA V launched, SpaceX has gone from a concept on paper to launching hundreds of rockets a year. They have achieved many first-evers including catching rockets from outerspace on ocean based platforms and spreading high speed satellite Internet across the globe.

Rockstar meanwhile has created 80% of a sequel to GTA V and spent years squeezing money out of online players. They don't care that their fans have been waiting over a decade. They care only about money.

Dwarf Fortress has been in development for 20 years, and they plan on continuing for another 20 years.

Unpopular opinion, I kinda like how popular the memes are especially 'we got _ before gta 6' over every video possible. I wouldn't personally mind if it keeps getting delayed (I barely play games anymore) if public interest doesn't wane.
