Guinness World Records: Duke Nukem Forever is the current record for the longest development period for a video game

I'm the time since GTA V launched, SpaceX has gone from a concept on paper to launching hundreds of rockets a year. They have achieved many first-evers including catching rockets from outerspace on ocean based platforms and spreading high speed satellite Internet across the globe.

Rockstar meanwhile has created 80% of a sequel to GTA V and spent years squeezing money out of online players. They don't care that their fans have been waiting over a decade. They care only about money.
Horseshit.

GTA devs after hearing about the record:

Seems like a weird stretch considering they released RDR2 in between, have been supporting GTA online and the game wasn't even officially revealed until 2023.
Even if you we were to assume full development began right after they released GTA5, it would still be factually wrong since there are games like Beyond Good and Evil 2 which was announced earlier and still hasn't been officially cancelled.

Just imagine the amount of money they used over these 14 years. They might also break another record about amount of budget.

SpaceX's 12-year sprint from 2013 → Nov 2025 is the fastest revolution in space history.
They turned reusable rockets from sci-fi into daily routine, flew 1,000+ times, put 7,000+ Starlinks in orbit, and started catching 70-story boosters with robot arms.

Maybe they didn't go from an on paper concept company since then.

Even so, it's laughable how little Rockstar has accomplished in the same timeframe...

They only released the 4th best selling game of all time afterwards. Terrible I know.

Eh, don't look to stupid institutions like guinnes world records for real game info, lol @ counting DKF as if it's in dev from 1997 to 2011's release when it was obviously completely canned and way later a different game with the same name was developed from scratch.

Anyway, hardly a feat, Routine was initially announced in August 2012 for release in spring 2013 and we're only getting it this December.

Let's count Beyond Good and Evil 2 then, first announced in 2008 and no end in sight.
I mean DNF was in continuous development for the entire period. The biggest break was the move from the Quake 2 to the Unreal engine, where the content/levels got remade, but 3DR were still working on some of the same ideas.
