Didn't realize this was releasing so soon. Same day as Evil West too.

This has looked super janky from the start, so I don't have a lot of hope for it. The original Gungrave game was good... but that was also 20 years ago. Overdose was alright. The anime was rad. This has like 55 Metacritic written all over it.

I played the demo, it was dumb fun and got all the edgy animu from back in the day. Even though it looks to have all the PS2 jank, it's definitely less clunky. I'm sure this won't review well, but I'll give it a chance (unless the MC average reeaally tanks, like below 50).

Sad to say it's a cool concept but this game is looking super rough in every way from the visuals to the animation and combat.

Can someone provide any Infos about this game regarding performane mode or framerate in General??

I wanted to buy Evil West and Gungrave but I canceled Evil West from my buying list. I can't do something like 1080P/60 fps on my 4K Oled.

I haven't seen anything about performance yet. Might just have to wait until the game is out and some videos are uploaded.

This is not terrible. It's very stuck in the past, almost like a remake of a long lost PS2 game. But if you loved these games on PS2, this feels similar, with pretty nice graphics too.

Shader stutter is bananas on PC. Oh well.

Yeah, I dunno, reviews be damned I think this game is kinda good, it's just old school. I think if you're one of the 17 people out there who still remembers Gungrave fondly, you're gonna dig it. Or if you liked Wet, or Max Payne or any of those sorts of style-based third person shooter games back in the day. Yes, it's a lot of narrow corridors with waves of bad guys, but that's what Gungrave should be.

I'm hyped to give it a shot over the break. Got it installed.

Game has two modes. 4k/60 without raytracing and 4k/30 with Raytracing It seems:

kind of a joke tbh.

I played it on my PC and easily got ~150fps at 1440p max settings (no RT) on my 3060ti, which is pretty comparable in raster performance to the Series X most of the time.

so a 120fps mode should have been easily possible.

furthermore the raytracing in the game is ridiculously light from what I've tested. I got ~110fps at 1440p with max settings + raytracing.

I bet a 60fps RT mode and a 120fps non-RT mode cluod have been possible.

I haven't pixelcounted the console version or anything, but I assume they're pushing a full 4k instead of going for better performance.

so, I just finished the train level and I have to wonder... DID ANYONE PLAYTEST THIS? how the living fuck am I supposed to beat that level without losing 90% of my health? I literally can not move in a segment of that level and get completely surrounded by enemies, including the bigger ones... if I didn't have one of my special moves ready I wouldn't have survived that... like wtf?

Is the shooting really jank for anyone else? Like, randomly as I'm just tapping the R2 button to shoot, the game acts as if I'm holding it and not tapping it, and will do a power-up shot. It happens so randomly and it's killing the flow and this game for me when the inputs aren't even reading correctly.

I wish i would of recorded it i got past it by glitch. I got knocked off and didn't die so ran along the train lol. Spent 45 minutes on 1 segment only to glitch it.

Do not have this problem at all. Could it be the controller?

Ah okay, I don't think so though. I tried another controller and Gungrave's the only game I noticed having this issue. If you don't mind me asking, are you playing on the PS5 version by chance?

I loved the PS2 games, Will play this today

Can anyone explain the timing on this missile parry? What am I missing? Is it early? Is it late? Are you supposed to hit a direction?

Patch 1.0 just got released on PS/Xbox, after being on Steam for a bit. Game plays a lot better now. It's clear this patch was meant to be a part of the game upon release, because most of the issues (unbalanced train level, laser/rocket enemy spam, auto-fire feature missing, broken platforming sections, and a lot more) have all been fixed.

The only outstanding thing left that I can think of, is that dodging desperately needs iframes. Too many boss fights have timing issues, where the window to dodge major attacks is unreliable enough to be called non-existent.

Just came to say that I finished watching the anime a couple of weeks ago and thought it was very good. I was expecting mindless zombie action and found a pretty good gangster story with fantasy elements towards the end. I'd even say that the zombie parts were the least interesting. Recommended.

What's cool is that with the 1.0 update, all coffin moves parry rockets now. So you can move forward and swing your coffin and it should deflect the rockets.
nice but i already finished the game before the patch 😖 i might go back again before my gamepass subscription end

Just got the platinum and beat GORE difficulty to unlock Brandon Heat as a playable character. Took about ~50ish hours total for everything. Brandon Heat isn't great, you don't get the golden guns/coffin from beating easy/normal with him, so he's significantly weaker compared to Grave. Not a great prize at all for beating the hardest difficulty.

Overall, with the 1.0 patch, it's a lot better than it was on release, but dodging still desperately needs iframes, and the game still needs a lot more balancing in general. GORE difficulty also needs checkpoints. Having to replay levels when you die to a boss was such a chore.

Holy shit at level 6. Am I underleveled? This is like Ninja Gaiden 2 staircase level of enemies all with gatling guns.

Seems like a huge update for gameplay balancing.

If you're playing on normal difficulty and struggling, one piece of advice I'd give is to beat the game on easy first and then go back again on normal. Beating the game on easy unlocks some powerful guns which will help on normal, and when you beat the game on normal, you'll unlock a powerful new coffin. The new guns/coffin are then super helpful for hard/GORE difficulty. Although with this latest update, it seems the devs have updated the easy/normal difficulties to be better.

I might try to continue it then, because before there were some moments that legit were just absolutely bullshit unfair nonsense where you were unable to react correctly. and something like that should never happen on the default/normal difficulty.

I simply gave up on the game because it felt like I had to grind like hell to get through the maps because I would otherwise be heavy underpowered.

I agree entirely. I beat the game on normal my first time around, and it was miserable. I went back and beat it again on easy afterwards, and then when I had the upgraded guns/coffin from beating it on easy/normal, I went through again on hard/GORE, and it was so much easier than my first playthrough on normal.

So yeah, it seems they intend for the players to play it in the easy > normal > hard > GORE order, but they don't tell you that. In hindsight, they should have called the difficulties: normal, hard, very hard, GORE. I feel like that would have done a better job of conveying the play order.

Perfect price on PS5.

$14.99. Think of it as XBLA and it's awesome.

I loved the PS2 game and it is the perfect sequel.

Great podcast game.

KICK THEIR ASS!

Damn I didn't even realize this game was out. I heard about it forever ago and there was zero marketing. Just looked it up and it's on Steam, along with 2 VR games? Wishlisted them to pick up eventually on sale, thanks for the reminder.

I'll do you one better. $15 for the PC version and you get a bunch of games with it.

I played this for a little bit on Gamepass but it's pretty awful so I didn't get very far. Is the main character supposed to look stupid or is this actually someone's idea of "cool and badass"?
