guys... what if Valve shadow drops Half-Life 3?

There's a rumor it's going to be revealed Tuesday, but then I realize, if it's a Steam exclusive, what's to stop them from simply RELEASING it?

Can you imagine that? I kinda want them to, at the same time, it's been a long time since I've played the originals, ideally I'd want to go back and replay all of them first, but just imagine if Half-Life 3's release is only days away.

Never understood the obsession with shadow drops. Makes no difference to anything, means nothing.

It's just another form of marketing. Don't know why people coom their slacks over it.

It's a world of difference if it's "about to be shown" versus "about to come out"

And I realize the series usually released in November...

The fact that HL3 is very likely set to be the flagship title that best showcases the Steam Machine and Steam Frame whenever those two pieces of hardware launch in early 2026; it will also be great on Steam Deck as well.

What exactly is shadow dropping?
When a game is officially announced it's available immediately. Microsoft did this with Hi-Fi Rush and the Oblivion Remaster.

Valve won't shadow drop Half-Life 3 though. It will be used to push the Steam Machine and Steam Frame.

For a lot of us, Half-Life is the last connection to the videogame industry we've left behind. Or, rather, which left us behind.

Of course he has to hope. I have to hope. We all have to hope!
I am a collaborator! We must all collaborate! Willingly! Eagerly! I ...
Uh. Damn it. I just dipped into my Dr. Breen voice again, didn't I?

Announce hardware

Why buy hardware

Announce Half-Life 3 as Steam exclusive

Tons of peoples buy hardware, those with good PCs don't care, likely to support VR too, Steam Frame in the mix. etc. You need to leave enough time for producing and selling hardware before you release the game. HL3 won't be on consoles, I would bet on that.

It's possible, but Valve will probably drop it with the Steam Machine

But Valve also knows it would also sell like crazy even with a shadow drop.

Game being made for many years and self funded by Valve. I'm so curious about what they've cooked since they are feeling ready to launch the damn thing.

I think I remember reading a rumor that the announcement would be this week, or sometime this month and the release window was planned to be around March?

Shadow dropping would be sick, but it would make sense that they would try to connect it to their new hardware to potentially move units. I mean, why wouldn't you? It'd feel like a missed opportunity if they didn't.

then I'd buy it (but probably double check it's on Geforce Now). My GPU is a grandpa at this point that can't run modern games very well (1080gtx)

It's likely to come out alongside the steam machine, but I almost got this gut feeling it's going to shadow drop before, in order to build up hype for the steam machine.

It's definitely not going to be on console, which is crazy to think about, that would make it the first AAA PC exclusive shooter since like what, Crysis in 2007?

If it comes to console at all it's likely to be PS6.

I installed HL2 when I got a Deck. I uninstalled it after playing 30 minutes. At least Portal 1 and 2 are still fun.
But HL2's community VR mod, if you have anything to play it on, is one of the absolute best experiences on the entire gaming market today... and I mean even if you have zero nostalgia or interest in retro gaming, it's still better than 99% of what is out there.

IMO, next to nothing chances it'll release before the 2030s.

But if a miracle, then it's "goodbye life". I'm playing that shit even if the world is burning.

If it's an announcement, say in 2-3 years, I'm gonna freeze myself somewhere underground so I don't accidentally die before playing HL3.

Would be a moment

That I'd miss out on, I'm not buying that console lmao

Half-Life 3 is not that big of a deal.

If it comes out, it will be like a 10 hour game that people will forget about in a weekend and go back to DOTA 2.

It's not 2005 anymore.

What if they shadow drop Half Life 3 on Tuesday and Half Life 4 on Wednesday?

What if they dropped (Full) Life on Saturday?

I want 1 of 2 funny situations to occur:

1. Half life 3 is exclusive to the Steam machine and Steam frame for at least 6 months.

2. Half life 3 is too demanding to run on the Steam machine.

Either one will crack me up.

HL was always very scaleable. There is no need to worry 🤣

I don't believe it will shadow drop, but I do believe once it is announced, it will release within 4 months, like Alyx did.

And the announcement will likely be with a random Tweet and/or a teaser-trailer, with a real trailer a few days later(like Alyx again).

But it's Valve, they could easily just shadow drop it randomly if they wanted to.

It won't affect me much and I'll treat it like any other game.

Half-Life 2 wasn't that amazing IMO and I didn't even bother playing the Episodes.

The best thing I got from Half-Life 2 is the introduction to Steam.

Not sure it will be a true shadow drop, but I don't think they would announce it much in advance of release either. Until it's basically complete and they are very happy with it, they will want to keep the option of shelving it imo.

So it will be a steam machine title and on ps6 (if at all) Any reasoning for that thought?
I tried to play HL2 and I was not really impressed. Felt like it fall out of time. Not sure why it is so loved. Must be nostalgia at work. I'm not saying it is a bad game, I just do not see it as a system mover.
Maybe I'm wrong. It was before my time (as a gamer)
