Grand Theft Auto Co-Creator David Jones founded developer Realtime Worlds in 2002, then set out to produce an experience that could venture beyond the confines of GTA. The studio placed such a weight on itself with its first project, Crackdown, an action-packed, sandbox adventure that provided players with free-form styles of play, intuitive game controls, and a true feeling of empowerment. While a super-cop tasked with ridding their city of the criminal element represented the lens through which users explored Crackdown's Pacific City setting, narrative storytelling took a backseat in favor of building a world that revolved primarily around gameplay and exploration.

Realtime Worlds succeeded in spades upon Crackdown's 2007 release on Xbox 360, managing to carve out a unique space in a market that had slowly become inundated with Grand Theft Auto lookalikes. Games such as True Crime, Scarface: The World is Yours, and The Godfather all tried muscling in on the territory controlled by Rockstar Games, thrusting players into seedy underworlds with fairly traditional tales of big city crime. David Jones' crew at Realtime Worlds took a different tact, injecting special abilities and an even greater sense of freedom into the formula.

Given Crackdown's positive reception and commercial triumphs, many were eager to see how the then-nascent franchise would further energize the open-world genre. And while Microsoft counted among those interested in the IP's future, the publisher entrusted its sequels to different teams, thereby leaving Crackdown in the hands of stewards who couldn't quite crack the code on what made the first super-powered adventure stand out from the crowd.

Crackdown is still hands down the best demo ever released.

All those years ago on Xbox 360, downloading that demo for Crackdown 1 was a very sweet memory.

Buying Crackdown was all the more sweeter for the Halo 3 beta, but the game itself was so unique and fun to play.

Such a shame that Crackdown 2 did grow like it should have done and the less said about Crackdown 3 the better.

I loved Crackdown, I found Crackdown 2 to be mostly mediocre, I loved Crackdown 3. Terry Crews was the best thing that happened to the series.
 
Crackdown 3 was the perfect 5/10 game. It did nothing well, and nothing was exceptionally bad. Everything was just ok, and that means I didn't hate it. But I wouldn't play it through twice.
 
Better then the first? Nah. But it wasn't as bad as it's been made out to be.
It is not entirely fair to the first one, but my comparison comes from the fact that I played both games around the same time. Terry Crews, better controls and overall just more entertainment value.
 
Did it ever truly rise? Crackdown 2 was a fun romp. That's about it. The third game was the biggest blight of the Xbox One era. An absolute embarrassment.
 
it was such a nice surprise with the halo 3 beta (or the full game? cant remember). i remember being like "tf is this? whatever ill give it a try" and had an absolute blast with the demo. bought it day 1 and it wasn a great "game", like there was a lot wrong with it, but holy shit it was so much fun running around the city like a super villain just causing chaos.
 
God I remember the whole power of the cloud BS that was passed around over and over which lead to so many stupid arguments

Did Crackdown even have a rise? I, like loads of other people bought it just for the Halo 3 beta.

That's how it got the rise, you're right, i bought it for the Halo 3 beta but was stunned about how amazing Crackdown was, not only are we getting into the Halo 3 beta but Crackdown is actually an awesome game.

Crackdown, Dead Rising & Gears Of War were the gold standard of Xbox 360.... my god how spoilt we were then and we never realised it... till now.

If you're looking for the guy that loved Crackdown 3 it was me.

I went in to it completely blind after playing and loveing 1 & 2. I didn't see the destruction tech demos, I didn't hear about the next-gen cloud promises. All I knew was it was bigger and better than the previous 2 games in almost every way and I loved it for it.

Only after playing the game I saw the stuff about the cloud and the destruction and quite frankly I didn't care as it doesn't change the amount of fun I had at the time of playing it.

I think I'm missing 5 or 6 orbs on the entire map. I understand that it's probably a 7/10 game but it's one of my favorite 7/10 games. No different than a guilty pleasure movie that you have watched 10 times even tho it's obviously not award worthy.
 
Crackdown could "easily" have been one of the great and iconic franchises still around today. I had some fun with C3, but just barely. Otherwise eyeopeningly shoddy. What a shame.
 
I found Crackdown 3 entertaining. It didn't do anything great, but it didn't do anything particularly bad either. 6 out of 10.

But it was a bit embarrassing to see how Xbox made such a fuss about this game back then, and what actually ended up being released.^^
 
Crackdown 1 was such a great game. It scratched that "gotta collect/clear 100% of the map" itch Nintendo games ingrained in all of us as kids. Halo, Gears, and Crackdown were the xbox pillars ... then they weren't.
