Yesterday I had to put my baby shiba down, he was only 12. The allergies that vets told me were t a problem ended up killing him in the end, on Saturday he couldn't sleep so I stayed up all night with him. The next morning I asked him if he wanted any food and he walked over to the bowl stared at the food and collapsed in defeat.

I had him since I was 13, and I feel like I failed him and didn't recognize his suffering soon enough....

So sorry for you. I know the pain is hard, but you gave that animal an amazing life and you should be proud of that.

I wish we could all have our pets live forever. It sucks knowing they will die before we do.

I know this pain. Just last Sunday we had to do the same for our dog of 13 years. Cried like a baby as it happened and it hurts anytime you think about it.

sorry for your loss, OP :(

the thing about putting your best friend down is that it's always "did i do it too soon?" or "i didn't do it soon enough". don't feel guilty.

We lost our Cat in November. I miss him dearly but we gave him a good life.

I wonder id I failed him too but he was a happy kitty and got love every day. You did your best man

You didn't fail him. Shibas are notoriously difficult dogs to own and 12 years is longer than a lot of dogs live. You did your best and I'm sure your dog knew that.

You didn't fail him, you gave him what every dog wants - a life of love to the very end.

Do yourself and your dog a favor and pick up Mary Oliver's Dog Songs: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1594204780/?tag=neogaf0e-20

And take an evening to remember the little guy.

Here's one:

He puts his cheek against mine
and makes small, expressive sounds.
And when I’m awake, or awake enough

he turns upside down, his four paws
in the air
and his eyes dark and fervent.

“Tell me you love me,” he says.

“Tell me again.”

Could there be a sweeter arrangement? Over and over
he gets to ask.
I get to tell.

Very sorry for your loss. This past Saturday my close friends had to put their dog down. He was a great dog. A cuddle monster. He would always lay across my lap or just beg to be petted whenever I came over. That day he started vomiting. We thought that it was just a reaction to him eating my dogs food (they were watching my dog). Then he just stopped moving. Puked some more, this time with blood. His legs were cold. Took him to the emergency vet. He had heart cancer. Like that, a friend was gone.

Mine died a few weeks ago too. 3 weeks from yesterday actually.

It does get better, slowly. All they want to do is be loved and thats what you did.

I feel for you, all three of my dogs are aging, one is 17 and the other are 10. We have a pure bred Jack Russell who is just turned 17, the others are mixed breeds and showing their age. One of them is lab mix, around the size of the jack but she is aging fast, I love her and don't know what I would do if I had to put her down, it will happen in the next few years and it breaks my heart to think about it.

Sorry to hear that your mate is gone, mate. Things will get better but we'll always remember these special family members. You did the best you could and your mate had a happy life, rest easy now.

The misses and my boxer is 9 now and we're having to consider putting him down at the moment, he's getting seizures multiple times a day and on heaps of meds at the moment. Similar to yours our pup has allergies, dirt and grass. Our young kids are about to have a life lesson any day now :(

Best to remember them for the joy they bring us and themselves throughout their whole lives. Cheers for our doggies.

My condolence. My dog got cancer at the age of 10 and had to be put down. It was three nightmarish days going to the vets trying to find a diagnostic, treatment and medicine. I was already skeptical because she had been sick before, and almost immediately the doctors recommended putting her down, but we refused and she ended up with a full recovery. But this time it was difference, she was suffering and didn't get better, so we did the only humane thing and put her to sleep. God, what a soul-crushing experience :(

I didn't last many months without a dog and got a new one, she is 5 years old now.

I'm really sorry to hear that, OP.

I recently had to put down my cat of 20 years and it was truly heartbreaking.
