Half-Life 2 question

Can anyone tell me if I can play Half-Life 2 without being online? I have been told that you can't play even the single player game without being connected to Steam. Thnaks.

Here we go again... It needs to connect to Steam to authorize the game on your system. You don't have to be online to play single player, just to authorize the game.

So if I don't get the game authorized then can't play it? If that's the case then screw it I'm going to DL it. I don't need to get permission to play a game I've just spent my freaking hard earned money on.

Like it or not, systems like Steam are where alot of games are heading. It's not hard, and it's not like it take long to authenticate it. It certainly doesn't require so much effort as to justify piracy.

I've been unable to play Half Life 2 without going online everytime I want to play it, and can't seem to find away around that...

What other games are these? This doesn't stop pirates I'm sure there os an authentication crack somewhere already online. Why should I jumo through hoops to play something I bought when the people the protection is ment for don't have to. I didn't like it when MS announced that I would have to call them inorder for my Xp to work and I don't like it now that I cave to log into somebody elses server to play my game solo at home.

How is it any different than requiring the CD in the drive to play? Or an authorization key? The only difference is the MECHANISM required to authenticate the game.

I don't like your flimsy attempt to justify stealing a copy of the game.

How is it 'jumping through hoops'? You hop online (and it's not like you weren't going to do that anyways), take the whole few minutes it takes to authenticate the game, then you can throw it in 'offline mode' if it bothers you so much from that point forward. You can't think much of Half Life 2 to begin with if that's such a challenge...

Except that's a complete lie. You have to be online every time you run a Steam app. I guess this means no more LAN.

Every game can be played in offline mode. I played Half Life 2 Deathmatch with five people on a LAN with no connection to the internet.

Um...I've played the vast majority of HL2's single player game with Steam in offline mode and while not connected to the Internet. Whatcho talkin' 'bout GAFer?

That first day when I couldn't play the game I just came home with, because Valve's servers were overloaded, was pretty irritating.

I just don't think requiring online authentication of a DVD retail copy was a fair idea. I'm for it's anit-piracy properties, but it requires Valve to keep all their shit together for you to have a shot at playing the game, and of course network issues on trhe user's end can futz things up more.

Now, obviously this type of thing is bread and butter for MMO games, and this is justified since when the game's servers finally go down the game will cease to exist anyway. These games all time-out eventually.

But presently, HL2 is tied to such a system, even though none of it's core content actually needs outside support. A single player game isn't supposed to time-out. They put something in between the game and the machine, that doesn't need to be there. It doesn't feel right.

If I want to play HL2 in ten years, am I going to be able to?

Since offline mode is available, I suppose if you backed up your steam folder with the games ready for offline play and your account info saved, you should be able to play even if steam went down.

You're averaging over 5 posts a day at Gaming-Age. Exactly how is getting online a problem for you?

Not a problem I just don't want anyone able to get into my computer, and before you say, "Hey they can't it's just an outward connection." Any outward connnection can carry a signal inward. Now it's just this, next year they are scanning your HD to make sure you don't have any MP3s, and then after that they are scanning to see if you visit suspect websites. I have a very basic problem with being forced to connect to play a game I paid for, outside of multiplayer, obviously.

i'm think u just need a reason to justify pirating, its nice being able to pirate without having to find reasons to

Any program could potentially do this, even without you realizing that it is connecting to the internet. What justification do you have to suspecting Steam more than any other game that doesn't use an authorization system?

As a matter of fact, a pirated version is MORE likely to be doing this than the official version.

Wasn't there a popular program or game or something that wouldn't run if you had certain programs on your computer, eg. a fake disk drive or something. I can't remember what the program was exactly, but I remember these boards had a big fuss over it.

I JUST bought the game online through STEAM and it was running a bit slow on my laptop so I unplugged the my ethernet cable after saving my game. It runs quite a bit smoother now and entirely offline.

quite a few games do that, but not half-life 2.

The industry loses BILLIONS on piracy every year, and you're bitching about having to sign into Steam? I hate people like you who just need to bitch. Just... bitch. No one's forcing you to buy the game.

Well like I said I won't and thanks to stupid shit like this I will be joining the ranks of those costing the industry BILLIONS. Thanks Valve. :D
