Half-Life 2 RTX demo coming out on March 18

This game is old enough to buy a beer. It still holds up thanks to the physics but I am excited to play this.

The better light effects are nice, that said they need to set the original light intensity down, otherwise the ambience will break.

Still flabbergasted what they're doing here with RTX remix

Hijacking a DX9 API call during a very low latency game process and revamp it completely.

It's so bright, good way to destroy the atmosphere.
Not only that, did you see the ridiculous smoke ring effects left behind after shooting the .357 Magnum in this game? This obstructs the view of oncoming enemies upon shooting again, and makes using this gun a chore. What's the point of shiny new graphics if it gets in the way of gameplay or the original developers intent on the atmosphere it sets within the game? Quake RTX and Portal RTX are bad too. These RTX versions destroy the original atmosphere of the games. I just replayed HL 2 25th anniversary with all the Valve improvements to lighting and draw distance, and I'd say that's the most authentic way to play this game, but hey that's just me. The best things I can say about these RTX releases of all these classics is that they are free to try, and that's a good thing.

What is wrong with Quake 2 RTX (the only one of these my 6900XT can handle)? Seemed good to me, and I put in 100's possibly 1000's of hours on the original.

can't wait
this is why I love my 3070 so much
And with DLSS4 Transformer Model DLSS you can get a reasonable output with Performance or possibly Ultra Performance scaling.

A lot of complaining about Nvidia and justifiably so, but it was a CLASS move for them to support this stuff on all RTX cards and not just the newest generation.

Think I'll be able to run this decently with a 3080?

I need to see if this works in VR.
not yet, as I understand it; the amazing devs who made the existing HL2 VR community mod said this version changes too many fundamental things with the engine etc to be compatible. They'd have to retool and release a whole new version of their mod.

I'd love to see it, although I need a new PC before running this in RTX + VR is at all feasible.

Demo? Full game when?
"When it's done", meaning we can wait forever 😁

But at least the demo will give us an idea of how the game will run. I'm afraid the performance won't be good, because Portal RTX used similar technology and was much more demanding even compared to PT in Cyberpunk.

It's not just you, it's objectively better. Tired of RTX slop.

Good news guys, you'll still have the non-RTX versions! Ignore these and go about your way. Because I want mooore.

I myself am very excited to play through this. I need to finish the VR version, but I put it on hold because of health issues. Getting better though so I'm going back in soon.

Despite many AAA games, the title that made me a raytracing believer has been Quake II RTX.
This seems to have the same potential for newcomers.

Nova Prospekt looks bonkers.

Half life 2 was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had but that was when I used a mouse and keyboard, desk set up I've not played it with a game pad which is how I play pc games nowadays. The demo will be a great way to find out.

A demo for a mod with no soul

You still have the version you prefer, so go play that

Options I know, mind blowing concept. There's clearly demand for this in community if modders are using their free time to make a free mod that you absolutely have the choice to test or skip

I know it's a long shot but hopefully the VR mod is compatible with the RTX remaster/updated to work with the RTX remaster. I just can't enjoy these games if they're not in VR.

So 27 fps on a 5090, that ain't even a high enough base frame rate for frame gen. Maybe with a 7090 you can have decent experience :messenger_downcast_sweat:
Why even render any frames at all? We should just hold controllers and let AI generate shit on our monitors based on our browser cookies and search history.

that's without DLSS uspcaling

265 fps means a baseline of 67 FPS WITHOUT frame generation. frame generation itself has a overhead so potentially it probably runs at around 75-80 FPS with 4K dlss performance. 4k dlss performance with transformer often looks better than native 4k taa so it's not an issue. you practically get native 4k clarity with 75-80 FPS without frame generation

in the case of 5080 however base framerate is 41, and without overhead probably 45 FPS. probably a bit tweaking would get it to a base of 60 FPS quite easily

I was afraid that HL2 RTX will murder GPUs, because Portal RTX was also using RTX remix and was the most demanding PT game I have ever played. I had around 45fps in Portal RTX with DLSS Quality and even Cyberpunk with PT runs at 67-80fps on my PC. I will probably get 45fps in HL2 RTX as well and need to use DLSS FG. I dont mind using DLSS FG (portal RTX was playable thanks to FG), but such old game should run much better. It seems RTX remix has it's own performance cost. Half Life 1 PT dont use RTX remix and runs nearly at 200fps on my PC.

Which GPU do you have?

It's in an issue. DLSS can reconstruct the actual detail and surpass TAA native on overall sharpness, but the problem is ray tracing quality (amount of rays) is tied to internal resolution. Ray Reconstruction can help to certain extend in DLSSQuality mode, but in DLSS performance mode ray reconstruction filters the lighting way too much and image starts to look like a paint.

DLAA (transformer)

DLSS performance (transformer) + ray reconstruction

DLSS-1.jpg

Look at car engine texture, ray reconstruction blurred the lighting and that texture. DLSS performance without ray reconstruction would render this engine texture perfectly sharp, but in RT games you need ray reconstruction, otherwise you will get RT noise.

In raster games, or games games with limited RT, I can use DLSS Performance and get native like quality, but PT games really need DLSS quality at minimum, and preferably DLAA (100% resolution scale) to look good.
