Half Life - buggier than I remember :/

I'm playing through the original Half Life as I never actually beat it (I think the furthest I've been is the chapter after Power Up). And I'm getting hit with so many bugs! Getting stuck on elevators, getting stuck on elevators and losing my energy, control jerking for a second after loading a game, amongst others.

What's really getting to me though is the latest bug I've come across - I'm in the Power Up chapter and have restarted the generator. When I get up to the control room however - it says the power is turned off.

According to an FAQ I've read, you have to restart, possibly from the beginning of the level and the game only keeps track of the last two save games. I really don't think I can be arsed to do it over and over until the bug stops happening...

hmmm really? i'm playing HL:Source (never played the original) and everything is fine so far (i'm up to Apprehension). there's only one small glitch I've encountered, but it doesn't screw up game progress at all.
it's in the area where you get the crossbow. as you turn a corner you see splashes of water as a scientist gets eaten by some water dwelling creature. if you start shooting it straight away the scientist doesn't get eaten and the creature just sits there in the water till you kill it. if you then jump into the water the scientist is standing underwater just like he's on land. you can talk to him and get him to follow you just like normal, except you're doing it all underwater.

I've tried to play through the games a couple of times before but got bored and stopped. I can remember a couple of problems but never as many as this. This latest one is just really annoying, I'm not gonna play the same section over and over. I saw some save games somewhere, I'll just use one of those instead.

Some of the bugs are just really weird. Example: I got stuck on an elevator. When I tried jumping, I noticed the pistol would appear as my weapon briefly (I was actually holding the shotgun). Once I changed to the pistol - I could move again.

EDIT: Meant to add: I'm not playing HL Source, maybe the problem were solved for it or the physics engine solves the problem?

I don't recall encountering any serious bugs in Half-Life singleplayer. Last time I played it was quite a while ago though, so maybe that's just my memory failing...

I played HL1 a few weeks ago in preparation for the sequel, and 2 bugs stood out for me.

Getting stuck on elevators unable to move was fairly common, but elevators were the only place I saw this problem, and the well-known bug on the "Dam" level near the waterpipes that causes a system hang if you hit a certain spot.

I've played the original HL recently. The elevator bug has been around a while, and I still ran into it occasionally, but other than that it was a largely flawless experience.

Elevator bug can be annoying, but just jump right before the elevator stops. And I didn't see that prob in HL:S.

I played it recently and encountered many bugs. Getting stuck on elevators, on loading screens, and others. Usually forgivable, because I save often and it didn't mess any of my savefiles.

Try to upgrade it, maybe it will solve some issues. I was playing offline, so I can't tell.

I haven't played my original copy for a very long time, but I really don't remember any major bugs. In fact, at the time, it was one of the most polished PC games I had played. Of course, this might be in contrast to SiN, which was released just a week or two prior. Now THAT was a buggy game... :\

yeah, I can still get the elevator bug in the original HL, but I never got it in HL source. never got any other really bad bugs, but then again I didn't get a computer that could handle HL until after it had been out for awhile.

I don't mind *too* much about bugs that can be gotten around by doing something (like jumping with the elevator bug). It's just this most recent one is a huge pain in the arse and I can't really get round it without getting someone else's save game. I may give it a couple more playthroughs tonight. It's doubly frustrating because I really wanted to beat the game this time!

Yeah, I have to put things into perspective...

When I first played HL, some scenes just ran so terribly slow and the game generally didn't rise above 30 fps. That silo, for example, probably fell to ~10 fps (maybe lower) and caused severe sound skipping for me.

HL2 runs at 60 fps probably 50-60% of the time with most of the rest staying above 30 fps. Only a few moments really brought me below that...

HL1 had much faster loading, though...

Hell, Doom 3 loads levels faster on my machine and barely touches the HDD during those loads. HL2 thrashes the HDD like crazy while loading levels...which is something I thought I was rid of (as no other game really has that issue anymore).

HL2 is a decently polished game, but Doom 3 was much more so and other recent console games go even beyond that (like Prime 2).

Do you remember the elevator you have to take to go down to the generator? I had terrible troubles with that one, it was crashing no matter what I did, and I saved very often. I checked it and I still have a save just before facing the marines in that zone (upstairs) and one just after powering up the generator (downstairs) and killing the soldiers coming down with a grenade. If you want to give it a try pm me.

I'll do that, thanks.

I remember the elevator you're talking about. On the way down, I'd get stuck at the bottom. I'd shoot the little creatures before they tripped the bombs. But after a short while, they'd just go off for no reason. Fortunately I realised you could lob a grenade down there and once the bombs had gone, I just did the jump before the elevator stops trick.
