By one week!

Amid the E3 tornado of news and announcements, Bungie broke some bad news to Halo 2 fans: The Multiplayer Map Pack has been delayed. Fortunately, the delay is nothing like the lengthy postponing of Halo 2, and this only sets the expansion back seven days, from June 28 to July 5.

The Map Pack will come in two versions, a boxed retail version that will sell for $19.99, and a downloadable version for $11.99. The boxed version will include the gameplay patches previously available over Xbox Live, as well as a new cinematic and a mini-documentary.

Bungie previously released four maps over Xbox Live: Warlock, Turf, Sanctuary, and Containment. The remaining five maps, Terminal, Elongation, Backwash, Gemini, and Relic, will be downloadable the same day all nine maps hit retail shelves.

Bungie has already stated that the maps are complete. The stuff that's still being worked on, is the extras for the disc. I wish they would just release the maps for download on Live.

Are we going to get a discount on the new maps if we already bought the first ones?

It's $11.99 to download all five new maps. Regardless of it you purchased the Killtaular Pack.

I bought the 2 killtacular maps for $5.99. Since the new maps come out the same day I might as well just buy the retail version for $20 to get the extra's and a physical disc, instead of just downloading the maps for $12. I bet the M$ exec's had a hand in this knowing most halo2 livers would do the same. This way they get some extra loot.

Rare must be helping Bungie with it.

The maps, and everything on the disc, are done. Not sure what caused the delay.

On a side note - the maps themselves sound awesome. In particular Terminal, with the speeding bullet trains running through randomly. Apparantly for both Territories and King of the Hill, they plant zone right on the tracks. Carnage ensues.

The main reason for us holding the downloadable version for that extra week is so that we can match up all the iterations of autoupdate, matchmaking playlist changes and so on. The maps themselves are done, so we're now in the land of retail shipping, matchmaking tuning and so on. Sorry to keep dragging it out. The reason the retail pack slipped was that we found a problem during the final test pass (which is what the final test pass is for, so I suppose it worked).

these maps will eventually be free right? If I buy X360 at launch and pick up Halo 2 I could d/l the maps for free?
Eventually. For example, the one's that are being charged for right now, before you buy it, it says "becomes free July something"

On July 2, when the next five come out, the Kiltacular pack becomes free. In "late summer" they all become free.

Good stuff, the improvements to H2 has me wishing I didn't sell my Xbox. Ah well, I'll catch it on X360...is it really a lot better than before? Worth getting back into it?

The cheat free environment alone is worth it. And the new maps range from really nice to a bit to hectic (warlock, other team holding battle rifles = bad times) Sanctuary and turf are amazing maps though. 3 plots on turf is cool (but hard)

Sadly, Sanctuary and Turf NEVER show up in Team Preview. I play more Ivory Tower and Lockout in team preview than sanctuary or turf. What a confused matchmaking system. Sad thing is, turf and sanctuary are excellent maps.

Let's not forget the improved melee and grenades. I swear people throw grenades four times as often, and they HURT now. That's a good thing. :)

I still don't get why Bungie can't just put in a server list. It really pisses me off.

The entire point of matchmaking is to avoid it. I would not be playing Halo 2 - or online at all - were it not for matchmaking.

Why can't we have both? I hate the randomness of matchmaking. "I want to play TS in a certain map, always"...I can't do that without rallying a bunch of people for it. I'd at least like the option for it.

The melee/grenade changes made the game feel more like Halo 1, and I'm digging that...

Nice, they did seem muted in H2, made the game lose a bit of its intensity. Well it'll be nice to meet up with GAF again from some H2 fun this fall. Hope you guys are still playing around then.

I sure will be.

The new grenades/melee are nearly exactly the way they are in Halo; if that's your thing then you'll be happy.
