So here's a thing. Remember way back when we launched the Multiplayer Map Pack and everyone freaked out because we were charging money for the maps that cost us money to make? Well at the time, we pointed out that if you couldn't afford them and you were willing to wait, they'd eventually be free. Well that time is nearly upon us. On August 30th, we're going to make every single new map (Turf, Backwash, Terminal, Sanctuary, Gemini, Warlock, Relic, Containment and Elongation) free for download. Gratis

This seems a bit condescending, especially considering how many developers release free map packs all the bloody time, hell look at the UT series, they've released dozens of maps for all 3 of the games.

I think they're doing a great thing, but I somewhat agree with you. I hate when developers turn arrogant, instead of being grateful for their (very well deserved I have to say) successes.

To be fair, they announced from the beginning that these maps were free on August 30. Hell it even says so when you select them in the premium content option.

Absolutely true, there are lots of things that "cost money to make" but are routinely released as a benefit to those who already paid money for a game

And Epic isn't backed by Microsoft (Gears of War not withstanding)

Nor did UT sell 7 million copies, yet somehow Epic managed to scratch together the collossal amount of money necessary to cobble together some multiplayer maps. /sarcasm

Bungie was open from the beginning about the maps being free on August 30. This news is old. They got some fast cash from people who couldn't wait.

It's not about the action, but how their comments come off as condescending.

I notice the next sentence was left off:

That way, we can reward the patient, and reward the faithful who bought the pack(s) by (soon thereafter) rolling every suitable map into every suitable playlist, ranked and unranked alike.

Add the two together and it doesn't sound so bad.

Xtroll denied!

So.. uhh.. why include them in the Halo1/2/MapBack bundle?

I always got the impression that Bungie wanted to give the maps away, and MS strongarmed them into charging for them, so the compromise was the system we ended up with... pay up front, or get them for free later.

I don't have any inside knowledge to this effect, but it just always seemed that way to me, for some reason.

I agree that in that context it sounds condescending. But that was clearly not the intent. Obviously the intent was to play along with the mail and complaints the site gets every day. Bungie has kept folks cogniscent of the free maps the whole time. And Bungie is the developer, not the publisher.

Etc., etc., etc.

Because most of the people who bought/buy Halo 2 don't have XBox Live, and triple pack sounds a lot more fun than double pack.

It's august 30.

Where the F are they?

The first four were staggered to alleviate bandwidth problems. I think they started rolling out near 9:00 am CST.

One thing I really hate about Bungie is their arrogant attitude. Like it's already been said, other, smaller devs have offered plenty of free maps and other content. So well done Bungie for supporting a game like everyone else, and making a butt-load of money for something that should have been free from the beginning...just like lots of other publishers do

The new maps are, in most cases, better than the original set. Not to mention that they are free. The only people who are charged are the people who can't wait for the maps to be added into the playlists and those without Live.

I really doubt it's as much as Bungie's fault as it is MS's...Bungie isn't in charge of stuff like charging for the maps people...

Anyways,I bought them the first day they were available, quality maps, but I don't play the game much anymore so I guess it was kinda pointless, but whatever.

Sho Nuff,

Patience is a virtue. Bungie is on the left coast. It's only 8 AM there right now. Settle down there boy.

Well, I'm in Japan and it's already the 31st here!

And to Sho Nuff the Shogun of Harlem, "Free on August 30" means "FREE AT 12:01AM ON AUGUST 30TH"! BEEYITCH!

OK, you go tell Bungie that and get back to me. Lemme know how that works out for ya ;)

We should get a GAF group together to play tonight. I haven't played Halo 2 online in ages, but I'd be more than happy to join a GAF group.

i guess i will go to bed

I haven't gotten any good playtime on any of the new maps since I bought 'em on day 1. I was looking foward to a 16 player game of 1 Flag/Bomb on Terminal or Relic, but nobody plays objective games anymore! :(

Hopefully when everybody gets the maps for free today, I'll finally be able to set one up.

I'll be playing longer than usual today. I'm looking forward to some more variety; should be interesting seeing how matchmaking goes now. I'm guessing I'll be getting some easier wins due to occasionally playing people who hadn't bought the new maps (and so are playing them for the first time).

Here's the Halo 2 GAF clan thread, btw:

The new maps hit matchmaking during the next update, which will be the 5th-6th according to the last update.
