Here's my analogy in script form. It's a draft, so I'd love to see some editing and additions.

If Bungie owned a restaurant:

I’d pre-pay $50.00 to get in, then:

Maitre 'd: Welcome to Cafe de Halo2 Monsieur. Would you like to sit at the steak/chicken/lamb table with 4 people or the pork/turkey/duck table with 6 people.

Me: Actually, I'm meeting some friends who are already here, can I join them?

Maitre ‘d: No.

Me: No?

Maitre ‘d: No.

Me: Why not?

Maitre ‘d: This is a new type of restaurant sir. Sit down, you will enjoy it.

Me: Ok, I’ll take the steak/chicken/lamb table

Maitre ‘d: Fine. I will find you a table in 15 minutes.

Me: 15 minutes, but there’s plenty of open seats?

Matre ‘d: Yes, but we are going to find the best seat for you. It takes time.

Me: Well, is there a wait at the pork/turkey/duck section

Maitre ‘d: I don’t know, you’ll have to choose that to find out.

Me: OK, I’ll try that.

Maitre ‘d: Alright, yes there is a wait.

Me: Fine, I’ll try that.

15 minutes pass, I get seated with 7 strangers.

Me: I’ll take the duck.

Waiter: I’m sorry sir, we don’t do it that way here. We bring you what we decide to bring you.

Me: What? But I don’t want pork, can I request to not get pork.

Waiter: No. And quit whining. If you don’t like pork, go home and cook with your friends. You should be grateful we opened this restaurant.

Me: Sorry. Bring me what you want.

[One excellent piece turkey arrives, and I eat it]

Me: Waiter, are there side dishes or anything?

Waiter: No sir, you must leave now. Your 6 minutes is up. Come back later with these friends you met here?

Me: Met, who had time to meet anyone? You made me leave in 6 minutes?

Waiter: I’m sorry sir, you must go. You should chase the 7 people from your table and ask if they’ll be your friends. And, sir, if you want to eat what you want when you want it, I suggest you cook at home with your friends. You ingrate.

But... you can sit with your friends.

Regardless, bungie.net forums have been much tougher on Halo 2 than anyone on this forum.

Are your friends as good at eating as you are?

Even if my friends were level 1 at eating pork and sauerkraut and I was level 29 billion three I could still make a party and drag my inexperienced pork eating friends into a matchmade game, or bring them into a custom game of 4 flag CTF on Foundation because I like driving the warthog on the airvents.

Uh, yeah. The whole thing pretty much falls apart right there. You can sit with your friends and eat whatever the f you want, to extend the lame analogy.

It'd be more like, 'Hey, I want to walk around the restaurant and see what everyone else is eating, then sit wherever I want and eat off of anyone's plate.'

I do think you should have the option of making your party public and searching through those games if you so choose, but this is a retarded way of stating that.

Oh I definitely agree with that. It just seems some people are so caught up in the whole "BUNGIE HATES CHOICE OMG NAZI M$" that they don't even explore the options that are available to see there is a bit of flexibility within the system offered. I think part of it is that its a change from the normal server selection scheme and generally people resist change.

:lol funny, and in a way i agree. i think bungie has screwed up to some extent with the online setup.

to me, i wouldn't mind them being all Nazi about it in regards to rankings (it makes sense in that regard) but they should have included a non-ranked section that gave users free reign to join/leave/setup/organize/etc/etc/etc everything with total and complete and full control with no limitations. there is really no excuse for not having it. again, i understand for ranked games, but have an unranked area too that doesn't force our hands. as it stands, i am getting quite frustrated with what Bungie is offering me.

i would also love to see XBL start allowing dedicated PC servers on their service, just to host games on. this way we can get more than 16 players in these games. i can't figure out why Microsoft hasn't thought of this yet actually.

anyhow.... :lol at the original post, nice.

Why should you have to pay $50/year and have to host your own games? MS should be hosting all the games.

If there was some problem with 16 player games or something I can see that. But MS hosting the games would have no effect other than costing them money.

I could be smoking crack, but I seem to recall this exact thing allready being in the game. In fact, if you have a guest on your Xbox you HAVE to do this.. and it lets you pick the map, gametype, and set all the rules for it. The only catch is you dont get to choose which people join your game outside of your friends/clanmates/recent players. Outside of people you invite, its just whoever the game matches you with.

Yeah, exactly. Do people seriously not understand how Halo 2's Live features work? There's a ton of options that let you do a ton of stuff. You don't even have to read a manual. Instructions for everything are presented right on screen as you move through all the menus.
