Since this might relate to Halo 4, I figured some people would be interested.

I also get the impression that Tom Doherty really likes Halo.

By Karen Traviss

New York, NY - Date XXXX - Tor Books, an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, LLC-the largest publisher of science fiction in the world-is excited to reveal the title and cover of the first novel in an all-new trilogy by Karen Traviss that will explore the Halo Universe in the wake of the final events of Halo 3. Halo novels published by Tor have sold over a million combined copies to date, and the entire Halo catalogue is now available in mass market paperback from Tor. Along Karen's debut Halo novel, Tor is also publishing the second novel from legendary science fiction author Greg Bear's Halo Forerunner trilogy in 2012. HALO: GLASSLANDS will be published on October 25, 2011. An unabridged audiobook edition will publish simultaneously with the new novel.

#1 New York Times best-selling author Karen Traviss has received critical acclaim and award nominations for her Wess'har series, as well as regularly hitting the bestseller lists with her Star Wars and Gears of War novels. Her first foray into the Halo Universe came with "Human Weakness," a short story from Fall 2009's New York Times bestselling "Halo: Evolutions" anthology that introduced her to millions of new Halo fans. A former defense correspondent and TV and newspaper journalist, she lives in Wiltshire, England.

"HALO is one of the grandest, most epic science fiction stories ever told, across media," says Tom Doherty, President and Publisher of Tor Books. "The Halo novels are one of the most popular and well-loved genre series published this century, and we're thrilled to have Karen to continue that grand tradition."

HALO: GLASSLANDS, will follow-up the events and characters from Halo: Ghosts of Onyx in the wake of the final events of Halo 3.

"Although Karen's novel deals with the characters and events from 'Ghosts of Onyx,' it's the wonderful new characters and scenarios that she brings so vividly to life that will excite Halo fiction fans," says Frank O'Connor, Franchise Development Director for 343 Industries. "We get an incredible opportunity to explore the Halo universe in the aftermath of the Covenant war, and unveil some mysteries and storylines that will connect readers to a compelling corner of the Halo universe. I can't wait for readers to enjoy this book as much as we have."

The Halo franchise is an award-winning collection of properties that have grown into a global entertainment phenomenon. Beginning with the original "Halo: Combat Evolved" for Xbox in 2001, the rich fiction of the franchise has since inspired a series of blockbuster Xbox and Xbox 360 video games, New York Times best-selling novels, comic books, action figures, apparel and more. To date, sales in the Halo franchise have eclipsed $2.3 billion. Microsoft recently dropped a bombshell on Halo fans at E3 with two big announcements. Coming Nov. 15 2011, Microsoft will release "Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary", a spectacularly remastered version of the original "Halo" campaign bundled with some of the most beloved multiplayer maps in "Halo" history - all created in celebration of the 10th anniversary of one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history. Also announced was "Halo 4," the hugely-anticipated next blockbuster installment that will mark the beginning of a new Halo trilogy when it releases in-stores during the 2012 holiday season.

ill follow-up the events and characters from Halo: Ghosts of Onyx in the wake of the final events of Halo 3.

I think that was the last one I read. Were the ones that followed any good?

I just dont get why Eric Nylund isnt doing this, love that guys work

Will still buy and read this though.

I'm excited about this. Hopefully the book isn't bad like the Republic Commando books. I don't know if the Gears Of War books are better than the RC books.

Halo: Cryptum by Greg O'Bear is the best Halo book in my opinion. Definitely wort(h) to read. Even if you aren't a Halo fan.

I wish Nylund did these but Karen's Gears books was OK to read. But with 343 supervising the novels, I am sure these will be good to read. Glad they're setting post Halo 3 though.

I finally bought Cryptum yesterday, kinda disgusted at how much it cost, it was twice as expensive as A Feast For Crows, that pretty uncool. And the words are massive, it feels a little like reading a kids book.

Still, I love the universe and the story of the Spartans that Nylund started off is probably my favourite part of the whole franchise. Such great characters.

The Gears of War books are actually quite enjoyable, they focus more on the personalities of the main characters than the games ever do and gives the universe a shit load more depth too.

Sheds a whole new light on Baird, Cole , Dom, Marcus etc.

For halo 4? Pretty please.

Iv read alot of bad things about karen, she made a real mess of the star wars books from what iv heard, ill give it a shot still, i need to catch up on my reading anyway.

Hopes she's up to the task. If it reads like another Flood the rage will be unbelievable.

I hope not. I want Chief and Cortana alone.

I've read a few of the Halo books and they were all right. One of them annoyed me a bit because "policing their weapons", or something like that, was repeated far too often.

To me it seems like they are all heading to a common gathering place for Halo 4, personal theory but I think Chief is headed to the shield world where the rest of them are at and the book will introduce the new enemies and maybe kill off a guy or two.

It would be cool if there was an outside force that is bringing these characters to a common gathering ground, would explain Johns retarded amount of luck.

Loved Ghosts of Onyx. Alongside Fall of Reach it is the best gaming novel I have read. Hopefully the new writer doesn't ruin the characters of GoO. Would prefer Nylund but I am still interested.

That might of been "The Flood" if i William C Diezt wrote that, presonal worst of the bunch, i seem to remember he all said said things like "shot the bullet straight and true" alot. I did have some good moments but wasnt anything special

I tend to like novel tie ins to games. Have enjoyed the Starcraft and Warcraft novels I've read. However Karen Traviss is one author I will not read. Not after her Star Wars work and simply due to her style in general. I have generally enjoyed reading about Halo more so then playing the game. Wish someone else was writing this.

I really appreciated the way Traviss approached the Star Wars universe, but her writing tends to drag like a sack of rocks.

Yeah I agree completely. I hated the way she handled the Star Wars books and I wasn't crazy about the Gears ones either. But I still really enjoy Halo novels, Cryptum was one I was genuinely engrossed in.

Who knows, maybe I'll get the Kindle version down the road for cheap...

What do you mean? How can you not love a writer who has such a deep respect for the canon of the series she works with that she ignores most of it, makes the Mandalorians a galaxy dominating honorable warrior race of ubermench who are perfect in every way, completely derails established characters, actively hates the Jedi and compares anybody who criticizes her to Nazis and/or the Taliban. I recall being very amused when she had to have a Mandalorian teach a skilled Jedi / Fighter Pilot how to use Helmet comms, and when another character is so taken by Mandalorians that they think in their moronic constructed language that Traviss made up. If you don't like it, you're just a dumb'ass'doa.

I've been told that Gears 3 is just going to ignore her "contributions" to gears canon (particularly the parts about how there are NO female soldiers and all women are permanently living in COG rape camps), although I haven't read the stuff.

Haha, thanks for the chuckle - I needed it.

It wasn't nearly that bad. The idea that Jedi are boring idiots was a mildly refreshing perspective, and the Star Wars fans she undoubtedly had to deal with on a daily basis were probably deserving of worse insults from her.

I do find it amusing that everything she writes for everyone gets retconned, though.

I have to believe Frankie and 343 would keep her in line canonically.
like they did with bungie and halo reach? (yes, i am still pissed that reach fucked up the canon)

Fucked up? Reach was the best and most cohesive story told yet in the Halo video games. The books always surpassed the storytelling in 1, 2 and 3 but I felt like Reach was very comparable to them.

Frankie isn't perfect either...

Remember Halo Legends?

Actually, she's writing Gears 3.

343i had nothing to do with the storyline of Reach...

Halo: Reach story is fucked up, if you read Halo: Fall Of Reach.

Halo: Legends is an awesome Halo product. A lot of quality animation studios worked on it. Compare Halo Legends with the EA games animes please.

He is referring to the fact it radically changed what was originally the tale in the Fall of Reach canonical novel.

They're stewards, I have to believe they had authority to say "no" or at least point out the flaws.

Dear lord in heaven. Good thing I don't care about the story.
Well it's not like Gears was this literary masterpiece to begin with, so I doubt she'll mess it up too badly...

As long as I get to hear Cole scream "Woo!" and shit, I'll be happy. :P

Man, I always get 3/4 though Halo books and never finish. The only one I have read fully is The Fall of Reach. I have Cryptum started, but it's slow to begin with...

Yeah, I definitely agree it's a slow starter, took me until about half-way before I was sold. Then it's a whirlwind to the end.

keep hearing so many good things about Cryptum but its hard for me to get into a book with a slow start. Some people said it even killed the book for them.

I was waiting for them to make Cryptum into a Kindle eBook, but it didn't look like it was gonna happen so I bought the paperback and I'm planning to start it this afternoon.

Ghosts of Onyx, The Cole Protocol and Contact Harvest have all been Kindled... why not Cryptum? I want it on my phone so I can read it at work :P

Far as I know, Cryptum was available through Kindle day 1.

I search and all I get is "Your search "halo cryptum" did not match any products in: Kindle Store" is it not available in the UK?

Edit: can't find it on Amazon.co.uk or .com :(

A sequel to Ghosts of Onyx interests me. Wish Nylund was writing it though.

I'll have to check out Cryptum one of these days. Maybe after Dance with Dragons.

From the looks of it, 343 didn't have any say over how Bungie developed Reach.

Wrong by a large margin. That title belongs to Halo 2.

These are strange criticisms with nothing about the actual story told by the book.

Unlike Halo 2, Reach had a completely satisfying ending that brought everything full circle. I literally got shivers during the final sequence when the soundtrack kicked in. Of the three other games though I'd agree that 2 had the best narrative among them.

I'm glad Bungie decided to tell the Covenant side of the story. It gave much more meaning to the war with the Covenant rather than fighting faceless aliens.

Halo 2 has a satisfying ending now that Halo 3 is out. And the ending, while one of the best in videogames, can't make up for all the plotholes and character deaths that came before it. The ending doesn't make a story.

We'll have to agree to disagree. :P

Regardless, it'll be interesting to see how this book turns out. I don't have especially high hopes with Traviss at the helm.
