For the love of God please let that be playable in MP. :'(
I think one of the magazines said Bungie referred to it as the "Warthog of the sky", though I'm not sure which one. Would be odd to call it that and not put it in MP.

Those are some good questions you posed Eazy. I really do hope the grenade throwing is exactly or very similar to Halo 3's. ODST was pretty weak. About the sniper, maybe the problem isn't the sniper itself but rather everything else that makes a multiplayer match like the map design, weapon layout and starting weapons. I think Reach's fewer amount of guns is a smart thing. If there were more BR's on maps with Snipers or a BR in everyone's hand, the sniper would not be as big as a threat. Instead the maps are littered with SMG's, magnums with no range and maulers. The sniper in Halo 3 is already way nerfed from the Halo 2 one. There's basically no sweep sniping, getting headshots is more difficult (don't know the reason why, it just is lol) and the rate of fire was decreased as well. How much more can you nerf it?

There's more I wanna elaborate on but I haven't thought it all out yet. I believe these weapon "problems" are not so much about the weapons themselves but the entire game and every aspect. Halo 3 is a very very team oriented game and that seems to be forgotten sometimes. It's understandable though.

edit: Bagel I noticed you were watching me stream on JTV today. Don't be so shy next time, I'll make you a mod. :D I hook HaloGAF up on my stream lol

Sketch's run down on the 3D art had the phrase. I pointed out multiplayer implications when the article was linked, but the more I'm seeing the bigass guns on it, the more I'm thinking it was metaphorical: Fast transport with mounted weapons.

Some VERY interesting Tidbits from the ordinance pages:

The DMR "Although it saw more widespread use throughout all branches of the UNSC prior to 2548, it has since been superseded in use by the BR55 in all branches but the Army." :lol

The Plasma Pistol: "This small directed energy weapon has two modes of fire: semi-automatic direct and semi-guided AOE. The secondary AOE mode drastically reduces battery life. " - firing modes!?? very interesting

The Spirit: "It is capable of carrying up to 30 infantry and 2 vehicles" - that leads to the opportunity of some BIG scale battles!

It means holding down the trigger and then firing or just pressing the trigger over and over. It has been a feature of the PP since CE.

On someone's recommendations here I downloaded the Shadowrun trial, and its pretty awesome, am I right in thinking that magic is ONLY obtainable through like purchasing at the starts of matches and not actually on the map somewhere to fight over?

This is less off topic than it seems, I think some of the Shadowrun stuff will carry over to Reach and im pretty interested in hearing how shadowrun works

the reticule is crazy on Shadowrun on Reach it should only move when firing!
Let me start by saying I think people are getting really carried away with this Shadowrun analogy. The reticule in Reach sounds like it'll work similar to how it's worked in Ghost Recon, RS3, and most other realistic shooters. Representing the gun's varying spread through the reticule is definitely not something unique to Shadowrun. Sure comparisons can be made between Shadowrun's rifle and the DMR but it's not that special a comparison when all single-shot rifles in realistic shooters work that way.

Shadowrun was set up, like someone mentioned earlier, exactly like CS but you could purchase spells in addition to weapons. Much like CS you start with a little bit of money at the beginning of the game along with a base weapon (and maybe even a freebie spell) and earn credits to buy more advanced weapons and spells by the you and your team's performance. You could pick up weapons dropped by enemies but there were no weapons strewn about the map. There was no persistent character progression and everyone started from the same point each game.

I really don't see them going this route and besides the inclusion of credits (which to me seem persistent through SP,co-op, and MP) I don't see any parallels between the two games or hints that they're even looking in that direction.

BTW I loved Shadowrun.

Sounds like the same method of pumping the trigger to pepper PP shots and holding the trigger to charge the shield draining shot. The only new thing, and I think this was mentioned in the Swedish article, is the AOE. I don't think any previous PP had an AOE, it only drained the shield of the individual or vehicle directly hit by it. Little ambiguous on what AOE it may be referring to so there may be no change at all.

I think the AOE is far more interesting than firing modes, of which the plasma pistol has always had two.

We take a break from our weekly Thursday show format to bring you yet another exclusive special edition podcast, this time centering on Bungie's much-anticipated prequel Halo: Reach. Host Matt Helgeson gathers together the GI staffers that were lucky enough to see the game in action: cover story author Matt Miller, Bryan Vore, and Dan Ryckert. In the first segment, we get the gang's impressions of the game, and get the inside scoop on the game's exciting new features, storyline, characters, and weapons. In the second segment, we open up the reader mailbag and answer Gameinformer.com user queries about the game. The podcast also features some exclusive music from the Halo: Reach soundtrack.
I won't get a chance to listen to this until later tonight, but that certainly sounds promising.

Not entirely related to Reach, but I took a couple of pictures from within Bungie on my visit there last month. I'm not a photographer, but I thought some of you might be interested to see where all the magic happens?

Hey thanks for posting those :).

Also, your Reach preview was my favorite, your honesty about it's visual shortcomings made me more confident about your honesty in regards to the rest of the awesome stuff going on. Are you guys planning to do more features?

So what do you all think: Jorge's massive machine gun will take you to third person, or will it have sights of some sort?

Nice. Jun's profile tomorrow. :D

I also had a question about something. Do the Spartan III's have the unbreakable skeleton enhancement like the Spartan II's? I can't remember.

Damn, we go almost half a year without anything, and now we seem to get new stuff every couple of hours. Crazy!

Thanks everyone who posted something new.

You never know. There is that blank profile on the Bungie site that is classified still. Maybe it will be the AI?

It's glorious. We didn't even have this much news pouring for Halo 3 until mere weeks before launch.

If you're too close to the impact of a charged burst, it'll deplete your shields. The closer you are, the more damage it'll do.

Did they sneak that Elite render in in the last 2 hours? It definitely wasn't there the first time I looked...

EDIT: Yup.

I think that the Elite model looks better, tech wise, in Halo 3. The armor texture just seems lower-res and more dull in Reach, even though I like the design of the armor a lot more. Is it missing some specular maps or something?

GI podcast pretty tame so far. What I've collected so far from it:
Probably only play as LWG.
The skirmishers didn't have shields in what they saw. Also compared them to evil big bird. Hmm...
Duration of the powerups vary. "Sprint for like 5 seconds" while camo lasts longer.
VISR is out. So nightvision =/= VISR

Good deal. Really want to see it in action. To see if it has an AOE when don't hit an enemy or vehicle directly and play the beta to see how effective the shield draining magnitude and radius are.

I thought we were done posting these? It slightly ruins the characters. That one looks amazing tho.

edit- The podcast had no new info, but it was interesting nonetheless to hear they talk about the game. I'm slightly annoyed at the promise of exclusive new Reach music... new to your podcast? It was just the same old vga trailer music that's been up on Bnet for ages.

You're reaching.

Not really, most of it is one contiguous section of armour. No breaks in it helps for it stand out.

... It might help somewhat that I live next a shitload of deer.

But fine, I'll keep my faces to myself. First one I posted. :(

Yeah, nothing really to report that isn't already known except for the tiniest of details.

Notable to me was what wasn't spoken of:

- No word on AA or image quality directly. But detail wise they did compare the jump in graphics as similar to the jump between 2 and 3.

- No mention of motion capture whatsoever. This seems really strange to me, as I'd imagine this to be a major difference in look and feel from the previous games, and one that would be immediately apparent to anybody who got to see the game in motion. Do we have actual confirmation that characters use motion capped animations? I've only heard it directly mentioned in relation to faces.

And I still didn't get any more of an idea of how armor abilities work. At first I thought the idea was modeled more on Crysis, where you would have access to a variety of abilities, but restricted in that you could only use one at a time. More recently it sounds like something you specifically choose, and that your choice defines your role, and acts as part of the customization system.

I'd also like to know whether armor customization (outside of abilities) has any direct effect on gameplay. I could imagine Bungie using a system like Rainbow Six, where heavier armor directly limits mobility and likewise, with earned unlocks only providing different designs, so that the field stays even. But I'm not sure whether thats in the cards or not.

That has me wondering if night vision would be an armor ability. So you'd always have the flashlight handy, with the ability to snag night vision. Looking at that night time mission, a natural way to mix up the gameplay would be to give the player the option of picking up a sniper rifle and night vision, or camo to sneak around in the dark doing assassinations.

I can't believe people don't like VISR. I thought it was amazing.

The only downside is that it was TOO useful. There was literally no reason to turn it off in low-light conditions from a gameplay perspective. I think it would be fine if it was made a little less omniscient.

I wish I could crowbar some Elites.

"Gordon, the whole world has been taken over by a race of malevolent aliens. All of humanity is depending on you. Here's a goddamned crowbar."

"Hey Chief! The Aliens have practically wiped out the UNSC forces. You're our only hope. Here's a shitty AR."

Sounds pretty damn sweet, especially if there are particle and sound effects making it believable (i.e. the plasma burning and searing in the wall, as Edge described it).

In the dark lit moments in ODST (which were quite plenty) there really was no reason to turn it off.

It's kind of a good thing to have night vision anyway, rather than VISR, I think.

Since Bungie added dual wielding, they did bring down the power of the guns like the Plasma Pistol, Plasma Rifle, and the Needler (though Halo 3's Needler rocked).

With Reach having fewer actual guns, I'm thinking they'll make the Covenant weapons more powerful than before, similar to Halo: CE style. The Plasma Rifle appears to be the Elite's version of the Assault Rifle, so I'm hoping it can stun opponents and derail shields quickly. Highly doubtful they're banking on two or three weapons being the primary focus; however, instead improving previous games' armory.

According to posts in the this thread it looks like the wonky reticule was explained as a bug in theater mode, used to capture those screens.

And was later unexplained by sketch. Though it'll be properly explained in tomorrow's BWU.
