Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

"Hey Chief! The Aliens have practically wiped out the UNSC forces. You're our only hope. Here's a shitty AR."

"Your mission is to infiltrate a Covenant ship that is stationed on the other side of this valley. The ship is on high alert, filled with thousands of Covenant forces, and possesses a thick defensive screen 300m in all directions before you even reach the ship. We'll give you three grenades, a sniper rifle, and a squad and a half of Marines. You will have no air, artillery, or diversionary support of any kind. Don't worry, we'll drop in reenforcements two at a time, as they die."

Listening to the Bungie podcast, I like the bit with the sandbox designer. he basically made the point that if you drop a player into a box with some scattered cover and enemies you should automatically have a great time again and again with the tools the game has to offer. The Halo sandbox does a pretty great job with this, especially with how the enemy behaviors and their collective action as a group. Not many games get this basic point right.

"It's not the tool that counts, it's the tool holding the tool."

'Sides, crowbars kick ass and make space invaders shit themselves in different colours.

It's because of a bug. Confirmed.
It's not because of a bug. Deconfirmed.

Let me break it down for you.
This post/message from Evil Otto made it seem like the reticule was a result of a bug in the first person saved films. But shortly after, Sketch comes in a clarifies it a bit for us:
FWIW, that particular screenshot, the first person one with the questionable reticule, was not taken in a saved film. We had other issues with films and screenshots in that timeframe, requiring me to do it the old fashioned way and pause the game on the fly and use our console command.

The exact explanation for reticule-of-baffling-leftness is coming in the update tomorrow. (I just drizzled on Urk's parade)
So while there was a bug in the saved films, Sketch didn't even use the saved films to capture the screen so whatever bugs were/are in there didn't have an effect on the reticule in the screen. Whatever is making the reticule off-center, as Sketch reveals, will be covered in tomorrow's update. Until then it's anybody's guess what element of gameplay does has this effect and only one thing's confirmed; it's not a bug.

You've just been palmdaled, son.

Both are fake, even though the screen with the Carrier is very nice.

I'm doubting those are fake. Same way everyone thought Morello
s were fake?

Menu layout is identical to in Toms screen, and, you know, it's taken off screen. That'd be pretty hard to fake.

Not to mention the BETA is at WORST 2 and half MAYBE 3 months away, so you'd think they'd be a nice chunk of the way through it.

How would it be hard to fake? Make the image, display it on a tv, and take a photo. Bam. The designer could have easily copied the TM screen to make it seem more legit.

Pretty sure Urk confirmed its unauthenticity anyway.

I really like the new Elites. The one in the trailer was the most awful, ugly thing, but all the screens and renders are very attractive indeed.
Glad that Grunts remained basically identical, except for some new tank designs. Won't make my dol--... ACTION FIGURE collection obsolete.

I actually have the Action Clix series. I don't play the Clix games, but all of them make for a pretty cool diorama I built in my brother's room. Hopefully there are Reach Clix figures.

I can't believe people don't like VISR. I thought it was amazing.

The only downside is that it was TOO useful. There was literally no reason to turn it off in low-light conditions from a gameplay perspective. I think it would be fine if it was made a little less omniscient.

If you were playing on legendary it was really useful to turn it off in the hub world at night as outting it on basically lit you up like a christmas tree.

If you turned it off you could really sneak around a lot of patrols in the shadows.

Hey thanks for posting those :).

Also, your Reach preview was my favorite, your honesty about it's visual shortcomings made me more confident about your honesty in regards to the rest of the awesome stuff going on. Are you guys planning to do more features?
Thanks a bunch :) We are probably not going to do more on Halo: Reach from this trip to Bungie, but hopefully, we'll get the chance to visit them again in the future.

Uhh, there's no new Reach music that podcast. The only nuggets of info are about the assassination 3rd person animations - some of them include opponent neck-breaking. They discussed the possibility of people in MM using camo to sneak up behind people and do this, or hiding behind cover and using dash to run up to passing enemies and assassinate.

It is 100%. The game is just going into Alpha.

Just listened to Game Informer's podcast, and was pretty satisfied. Some of the info was factually wrong and there wasn't too much stuff that could be called new, but they did explain some things which were only hinted at before.

The discussion regarding the lack of commandable squads and the inability to play as the other members of Noble team seem in line with what Bungie seem to be going for in keeping with the basic Halo gameplay. Yet by playing as a blank template like Noble 6, it's possible to customise your character as you play according to which role you prefer to fulfill, as represented by the other members of your team.

This will translate over to co-op and multiplayer, allowing players to customise their characters to suit certain roles. It's kind of a mix between Halo and a squad based shooter without being one.

Some of the other tidbits about graphics and the scale of the game are pretty sweet too.

Look at the rediculous comment this guy made about halo 3

http://www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/82?ch=2&sd=1

... Obviously Reach falls and you are the spartan who escapes, who then becomes the Halo Spartan

Everytime i see this guy in a feature he makes comments that are facepalm.jpg worthy

In that episode he also sais he beleives Gears of War 3 will come out this year even though Epic has said they want to wait until the next generation fo consoles to continue the Gears of War series (3)... not impossible but improbable.

Yeah that was a stupid comment, but you can't expect everyone to know everything about every game.

I wasn't aware Epic had said anything like that but I honestly doubt that Gears 3 will wait till the next console generation especially when at this point that seems like it'll be at least a year or two away.

A more likely reason for Gears to not come out this year would be that Reach is out and Mircosoft would likely want to spread those releases out a tad. If Gears does't come outt his year I'd fully expect it early next year though.

Hearing that the reticule expands when you shoot sounds so simple, yet one of the most effective concept that's in Reach so far. Static reticules are a thing of the past.

Holy crap. Nice one, Garnett.

There's been a lot of talk like that on the Giant Bombcast. Everyone's convinced Reach takes place many years before Halo and that you play young Master Chief.

According to Mark Rein "That's a gross misinterpretation of what he [Michael Capps] actually said."

I see. Yeah i doubted that they would wait until the next console but i highly doubt it will be out this year. Microsoft will want to whore the franchise but they wouldnt put one of their dirtier whores against their bottom bitch lol

Garnett is not a Halo fan so it shouldn't be surprising that he can't tell his Spartan's apart.

So why was he talking about it? I really don't understand games journalsim sometimes, could you imagine if a Football pundit was saying that John Terry was the captain of Man United? He would get fired. I am not hating on Garnett here btw there is loads of stuff like this going on, IGN are the worst at it.

Just listened to the podcast. I'm really liking both the design decisions that Sage is making and his reasons for making the tweaks. While it doesn't sound like the spread is any different than we've already seen in Halo games, representing it visually with the reticule is going to make it a lot easier for people to understand what's going on under the hood. The DMR and needle rifle both sound great - Sage seems to understand that direct Covenant counterparts ("beam rifle vs. sniper rifle" or "BR vs carbine") are not compelling additions to the sandbox. Differentiating Covenant weaponry is going to bring back some of the fun of Halo 1, before design decisions like this made half of the available weapons not even worth a second glance:
Brute_Plasma_Rifle.jpg

Also, I hadn't heard the story behind the accidental greatness of the M6D before - I have to say, it's weird to think that at one point it would have taken 24 shots to kill a red elite on Legendary or 6 to kill a multiplayer Spartan. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here posting on HaloGAF if Halo 1 had shipped that way, so it's a little bit surprising that they still sound so upset about letting that "glitch" slip through the cracks. That mistake was a game changer, in a good way.

Bungie is going to have one hell of a time convincing casual players you are not the master cheif. He'll need a definite name that is repeated frequently throughout the game, even if it's just a number or rank. If people know they're playing as an unnamed spartan just before halo CE, they'll assume you're the MC. Even better would be at least one cameo of 117. Let us see him, identify him, and let it be known we are separate. Anybody steeped in the fiction would know that the player character isn't the same as in the trilogy, but we are a niche audience.

A rank won't be enough.
Last time I heard him talk about Reach, Jeff from Giant Bomb was convinced that it can still be the Master Chief, he's just not called that, because he had a different rank "back then".
People who don't give a damn about the story will find a way to convince themselves that it's Master Chief. Why? I have no idea.

"Listen Rookie, you have learned many things in these missions and have reassembled the dragon crystal. Please accept this Master Chief cape of power for your next adventures."

I just think its sad that Garnett, a videogame "journalist", would say something so false after bungie has stated that Master Chief is not the main protagonist... They should do a Noble 6 mini media campaign so people can get familiar with the character because so far the most noticed characters are Jorge and Emile.... Jun is almost non existent at this point.

As much as I love Garnett, I've kind of got to agree with dilatedmuscle to an extent. Garnett's appearing on a show where Reach was bound to come up, it wouldn't take 5 minutes to do a small bit of research to be anyway clued in. If he didn't feel like doing that, then he needn't have said anything at all.

Ultimately it's only a small thing, Master Lee rocks.

I doubt we're ever going to get to know this Noble 6. I suspect he's going to remain a "blank slate" type of character, like the ODST Rookie.

Isn't the new guy a Lieutenant? All you need to do is pay attention to the trailer and have some knowledge of military ranks to know it's not John. You don't go from CO to NCO.

Future ranks don't work the same way!
or:
It's taking place so long before the first Halo, he'll have enough time to get promoted and hit puberty!

I didn't know that :-D

I had to Google CO and NCO.

*edit*

Also, Garnett didn't even seem to know or care about the name of "Halo's Spartan", let alone know that Master Chief is a Non Commissioned Officer rank.
