What, the comic? That's not spoiling, it's just the premise. Only up to 2 so far, so it's not like I know what happens in the end.
What the Hell are you talking about? You just spoiled the entire second issue for me.

I'm going to assume you're not joking:

He hardly "spoiled" anything more than the cover. Unless you think they're going to have a Doctor Octopus cameo when you see this:

Urk, will we be getting any in game footage from X10? If you can't answer that's cool, just eager to see the game in action. The fact that weapons now strike instantly has me all hot and bothered after playing some CE and 2 at a friends last night. I could never quite put my finger on why 3's weapons felt slightly off but now I realise.

If I remember correctly, CE's weapon's aren't hitscan either, you have to lead the shots at long ranges. The bullets may be signifigantly faster than those in Halo 3 though.

I remember that in Halo CE you had to lead a target something awful to hit with a Sniper. Halo 3's sniper is almost hitscan, and I'm not too concerned about it being hitscan by definition.

No matter how it's done people will find a way to bitch. All that matters to me is that it's consistent.

One thing that really disappointed me is that Halo 3 has less AI per encounter compared to Halo CE.

Halo 3 has 20, I believe.

But a team of guys who "know the levels" have counted at least 70 AI's at certain moments of Flood Levels.

Bungie, please fix this for Reach

I do love the idea of "a team of guys."

A team of guys counted the AR bullets as intelligent projectiles and proved mathematically it is the smartest gun in the series.

The ejected shells roll down hills, that's like 50 more AI.

Damnit! I bid on the signed Halo Evolutions book really early this morning before work, and I did $30 over the current bid, hoping for the best, and hoping I'd be able to bid again if it went up. But I didn't get the chance. :/ Oh well, it's for a good cause.

Don't remind me about the auctions.
I'm depressed because I wasn't able to even bid on the painting, AND it went for just half of what some sad fool gave for an awful Jessica Chobot photo on a big-ass sheet of metal (someone gave $1,276 for that thing! Why would anyone want that?! There's clearly something very wrong with humanity).

Oh, and if you don't mind, I'd like to suggest a little avatar clean up:

Halo: Reach weapon sounds basic analysis

Sniper Rifle
  • Four shots fired from each clip
  • Minimum time between each round: 0.8 metric seconds
  • Reload time: ~0.7-0.8 metric seconds
  • Zoom sound similar to that found in previous games
  • Sounds OP. Nerf it for the beta.

Assault Rifle
  • Noticeably slower fire rate than in Halo: CE
  • Similar rate to Halo 3
  • Reload time: ~1 metric second, seems longer than in Halo 3
  • Noticeably boomier, clips also sounded like they had more weight.
  • Sounds OP. Nerf it for the beta.

DMR
  • Minimum of 0.4 imperial seconds between shots
  • Between 1.4 and 1.5 imperial seconds for reload
  • Quieter reload than other weapons
  • Sounds about halfway between the bassy AR and the nu sniper rifle.
  • Sounds OP. Nerf it for the beta.

Frag grenade
  • More of a thudding sound than the pew sound of the previous frags
  • Minimum of between 1.6 and 1.7 metric seconds between detonation
  • Assuming maximum throw speed, time between throws increased significantly
  • 4 frags thrown. Make of it what you will.
  • Sounds OP. Nerf it for the beta.

Plasma Grenade
  • About 0.95 imperial seconds from stick to detonation
  • Again, much more bassy than earlier counterparts
  • Interestingly, the second and third sticks out of the three are noticeably louder on the left channel than the right
  • Halo 3 had a specific click where you can hear the stick, this is absent. Then again, the click could only usually by being stuck
  • Sounds OP. Nerf it for the beta.

Mystery weapon (Skill Cannon)
  • First second: Weapon being brought to bear
    -Distinct beep, possibly (probably) Covenant
-Comparable sound to the Spartan Laser's opening up
  • First second of "arming" contains Spartan Laser-like charge noise
  • After that, there are three small "plink" noises
    - ~0.5 metric seconds apart
-Last one sounding less "plinky" that the others
  • Continuing charging noise for ~1.8 more seconds
-Last 0.4 seconds of this charge contain three quick beeps
  • Next second contains what sounds like four rocket-like projectiles being fired
    -Fired two round bursts
  • Next come what sounds like the four rounds hitting the ground, appx. .35 metric seconds apart
-From the time the first "lands" to the time the first "detonates," there are five wave-like beeping sounds
  • All four detonations are heard in about a second, similar to the time frame in which they are fired
-Minimum time from det to det: 0.3 metric seconds
-Wave beeps continue until just after the third detonation
  • Detonations kinda sound like the frag grenade, that is to say, lots of thud
  • Sounds OP. Nerf it for the beta.

Observations/Hypotheses
All weapons sound like they have more thud than the Halo 3 sandbox. They don't sound too unexpected, however, so people can easily tell them apart and relate them to the sounds they've heard in previous Halos (Cept the two new weapons, of course). The sounds sound like they were captured in a valley of some sort; there is noticeable echo for all sounds.

Regarding the Skill Cannon, it seems that it has at least three stages to it's firing sound: Arming, Firing, and Landing. Four distinct clicks, thuds, or detonations can be heard in each. The loading of the first round takes more time than the loading of the next three, perhaps it is like overcharging a plasma pistol: The longer you hold the trigger, the more rounds you get. If we assume this is a "heavy" weapon, that means that you could fire a single shot at a foot mobile, but more for, say, shooting down a Falcon. It is almost certainly covenant. Even ignoring the information of Mr. Morello's, the beeps and charging sound sound more alien than what we are used to in game. The thought of it being a needle-cannon seems very likely, as Sage seems to be re-emphasizing how different the Needler is than other video game weapons (see: Beardcast). It fires, impacts, and then has a detonation for each shard, however, so there is no supercombine (that we can hear). The detonations are seemingly semi-random from the time of impact, as the impacts are regular, the detonations are not. Almost certainly anti-vehicle with the sound of those detonations, clearly overpowered. Nerf it for the beta.
Has anyone else been reading Marvel's new Halo mini, Blood Line? The second issue came out this week, and it's shaping up to be a really neat story. A group of Spartans in Black armour crash land on a planet with a forerunner installation and are abducted by the monitor along with some Covenant forces. It has some really nice artwork and is a lot better than Bendis' book or the last volume with the ODSTs. Seems like nobody else is reading it though, on iFanboy it only has 8 pulls (where Green Lantern has around 1000).
Not that I care too much about it anymore but the bolded portion above are spoilers for the second issue.

Wow, that is some hardcore nerd analysis. I'm glad the guns actually sound like guns now.
They sound way more real than the Mass Effect 2 guns, which might have been firing staples.

Have you heard them? They all CLEARLY sound like they could kill you. I like living, tyvm.

Have you listened to the last podcast? The sound doesn't really increase a weapon's ability to deal damage

If it was a jokepost, I just didn't find it funny

Halo Reach 640p and 30fps confirmed.

This one asks about Reach: “What’s the frame rate and resolution?”

Frank O’Connor: [chuckles] I’m sure people will know all about that when the beta comes out, in short order…

It was a joke about the last podcast, where they talked about guns SOUNDING like they might have to be nerfed. I'm well aware that bungie knows how to balance the weapons (cept the beta carbine, RIP). I can't wait to get my hands on them and then be disappointed at the AR being hitscan and nerd rage all over HaloGAF.

I wasn't sure if it was a joke. Dunno why someone would write such a long and repetitive post and making it not unfunny =\

I'm tiurd, I'm getting old. Will try re-reading your post tomorrow :p

That was actual analysis of the weapons, but the last bullet was the joke.

My point was that the cover itself shows a Spartan being captured by some machinery that can only be Forerunner. He really didn't describe much more than that.

I'm going to miss strategically leading my target with the AR to land perfect dome-shots.

EasyB, you're hyperinflating your hopes. I'll bet you legendary edition of Reach that the Deemer won't be hitscan. In fact, I doubt any weapon would be hitscan. None of the Halo 3 weapons were.
I now know you're just a joke-account.

I liked the imperial/metric seconds. Class.
It's a difficult conversion to be sure, but I needed to represent the sounds accurately. Sometimes I just need to use a real, manly, Amurrican second over the more accepted Communist seconds.

OT question for the HaloGAF crew: I need a new game. I'm thinking Fallout 3, but I'm hearing lots of good stuff about Mass Effect 2. I played one hour of Mass Effect and decided I needed to stop playing Mass Effect, stat. But I've read ME2 plays a lot better.

So not having played through any Fallout games, or the first Mass Effect, which would I be more lost in, ME2 or Fallout 3? Any recommendation in general of one over the other?

I could never get into Fallout 3, so much text and ish. Me2 is basically a shooter trying to be an RPG, it's an AMAZING game.

Why did you hate ME1?

I'm replaying that game right now before I start ME2, and it's brilliant for the most part. Why didn't you like it? Was because of the less than perfect combat, Mako exploration bored you? Quiting that game at 1 hour seems crazy, you need to give it a chance for the universe and lore to grab you. But anyways, for Fallout 3 you don't need to play the previous one, and it's a fantastic game. Playing ME2 without finishing (or liking) ME1, isn't right I think.

Personally found Fallout 3 to be completely boring, but you don't need any background knowledge.

Mass Effect 2 refers back to the original quite often, but if you just read a plot overview you should be ok. Is there a reason you didn't like Mass Effect 1? A lot of stuff hasn't change at all, other stuff has been simplified/removed and pretty much everything else is improved. Combat and technical issues are probably the most improved though.

Also Mass Effect 1 takes more than an hour to warm up. I pretty nearly quit early on and it ended up being one of my favorites this gen.

Heh. I didn't like ME because it was an RPG trying to be a shooter, but in my (brief) encounter with it I thought it failed utterly at both. Everything from the UI to the loading to the controls were clunky and poorly designed. It just felt amateurish and incredibly unintuitive to play.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I really didn't want to wade into the ME2 thread at this point and ask that question. :lol
