I would gladly purchase a big bird helmet Reach. I'd scare my dog with it.
It wouldn't bother my dog one bit.

Ghaleon if you didn't like ME1 don't get ME2, get the Fallout 3 GOTY edition(comes with $50 worth of DLC), it's still $60 but you'll easily get 100+ hours out of it.

Heh. I didn't like ME because it was an RPG trying to be a shooter, but in my (brief) encounter with it I thought it failed utterly at both. Everything from the UI to the loading to the controls were clunky and poorly designed. It just felt amateurish and incredibly unintuitive to play.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I really didn't want to wade into the ME2 thread at this point and ask that question. :lol
I didn't enjoy Fallout 3 all that much, and if you thought ME1's shooting felt unnatural and clunky you'd have a miserable time with Fallout. It also takes a shitload of time to get much of anything accomplished. ME2 improves on the shooting and UI over ME. About par as far as your average shooter goes but they've pushed a lot of the menu-based combat. Can't say for sure you'll like ME2 but I really doubt you'd enjoy Fallout.

Thanks guys. Back to looking for a different game. ODST was the last retail game I bought and I need something. Got the itch. :lol
You should probably get that checked out.

There's MW2, Dragon Age, and many other fine games awaiting you. What type of game are you looking for?

Bad Company 2 (Mainly for MP, but who know's the Campaign may be good too.)

And I guess it's not fair to single out cat helmets as something that scares my dog. He's frightened by everything. Like the OJ carton.

I didn't enjoy Fallout much. I wanted the story to grab me, but it didn't, and I got tired of the game. My friends really want me to play ME and ME2, I've heard really good things about both.
EDIT: Dunno if you have it already, and it's a fairly old game, but that means you could find it cheap: Mirrors Edge. Excellent game, in my opinion.

Fallout is less about story and more about exploring the world IMO. I skipped part of the quest and finished the main story in 7 hours. But then I just explored, finding stuff and talking to dudes.

Actually, I was on a quest for mini nukes. I eventually found some.

Ghaleon, I think someone of your calibre may want to look into something like this:

But in all seriousness, are you looking for an RPG, a shooter, a hack n slash... what? Something with depth or maybe just a game with instant gratification. We need more to go on here.

Personally found Fallout 3 to be completely boring, but you don't need any background knowledge.

Mass Effect 2 refers back to the original quite often, but if you just read a plot overview you should be ok. Is there a reason you didn't like Mass Effect 1? A lot of stuff hasn't change at all, other stuff has been simplified/removed and pretty much everything else is improved. Combat and technical issues are probably the most improved though.

Also Mass Effect 1 takes more than an hour to warm up. I pretty nearly quit early on and it ended up being one of my favorites this gen.

I also found fallout to be boring and the dialogue didnt capture me. I like the dialogue from Mass Effect. The gameplay wasnt that great but the simple RPG elements and dialogue lead to an amazing narrative with no mandatory micromanaging.

Im currently blue balled with ME2. I was supposed to receive the collectors edition on the 26th but someone F'ed up and im not getting it until tomorrow. Feels like such a long wait... But yeah, why didnt you like Mass Effect 2? If you get over the mediocre gampeplay/controls you can really get into the story. The game can also be fairly short or long depending on how many side missions and micromanaging you chose to do. Give it 3 hours and the story will grab you and it wont let go even after you pass it. I played through it 4 1/2 times lol.

EDIT: nevermind, i was pretty behind on things lol.

I swear i been playing the demo more then i would play most retail games. Im so addicted. The game still feels like the controls are very unpolished and the layout is questionable. But i been having a blast with my friends. Complete blast. I cant wait to play some other maps though.

I'm looking for something pretty meaty. The only genres I don't like are racing, sports and music. I have a preference for action, RPGs, and the hybrids therein. That said, I have a handful of specific preferences in games that are deal breakers and they're increasingly commonplace, so that's leaving me feeling picky as hell.

Halo 3, ODST, Oblivion, Condemned, Crackdown, and Fable II are probably my favorite retail games this generation. Lately I've been feasting on XBLA games and retro collections, such as Miner Dig Deep, Defense Grid, Kingdom for Kelflings, tons of puzzle games, the Genesis Ultimate Collection and Raiden Fighters Aces. I thought the first Gears was pretty good. I played through and was very disappointed in Bioshock and Half-Life 2. I briefly played (mostly by purchasing and returning the next day, my wallet reminds me) absolutely hated: Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Modern Warfare and Gears 2.

But I digress. Thanks for the suggestions, and if you know of any that seem to fit into the above mess, lemme know. I'll poke around some more and end up with something. I've just queued up a half dozen demos. Time to go to town. :D

Three things prevented me from playing this (it's the first game I downloaded): It's EA (yuck, but I'll live), it's MP only (I want to at least learn the controls before I jump into a match made game), and the request to make some kind of account and give EA my email before I could play anything. Not happening.

Dude, EA isn't as bad as it used to be. They used to be HORRIBLE, but now they've got some pretty nice innovative games.

Now Activision.... that's a different story.

Since you liked Oblivion and Fable, maybe Dragon Age is a better RPG for you. Opposed to ME2 or Fallout 3. I haven't played it, but a friend compared it to those games.

I liked Oblivion and not Fallout. I didn't give it a huge chance though.

Change sensitivity to preferred setting, leave all 'stick' options at default, change all 'button' options to BC1, fairly strong vibration, turn off aim assist - perfect.

But yes, absolute blast. Haven't had this much fun from a game in a looooong time. Even dying is fun.
Rar and I were in fits of laughter as the world's worst shot ever gave up his gun, got in one of those big russian trucks and went on a splatter spree.

We'd be standing in the open looking out to a completely empty stretch of land, there's nothing to see so we turn around and then BAM!
This truck comes from behind at what seemed like the speed of light with a body now stuck to his grill.
We'll all start shooting as it pulls a 180 and begins a delicate dance around us, picking us off one by one.
It didn't matter what we tried he just would not stop coming for us.
He may not have been able to aim but when he gets in one of those trucks he sure is one hell of a relentess motherfucker.

Only twice?

PC would be nice but I have too many people on xbl to play it with. Hmmm, maybe I could get both. Ah, if only I wasn't poor.

Same here. Though I played through and beat Fallout 3, the combat was so atrocious I couldn't be bothered to play much more of it.

I just learned this about Bad Company 2 today... you probably already know it. Pressing BACK while aiming at enemies calls them out to your team and everyone will see a red indicator on them and on your radar. This feature was in BC1 and but you didnt need to press a button.... I love reviving people and getting revived, So many points!!! sometimes you can get more points for reviving someone then killing an enemy hahaha.

Damn we strayed so far off topic. We need some reach updates!!! i hope they have juicy media in Feb 11th

I agree, but Halo is a shooter, it's never going to have a story that deep.

Would love a Mass Effect styled game in the Halo universe.

Yet the gameplay in Halo makes Mass Effects gameplay look like a generic broken shooter.

Ive been saying this for a while. I wish Bioware made a halo game. They are so good at story telling and i love the Haloverse. Imagine chosing what you want the spartan to say and having decisions have different outcomes. Or playing as a Marine in the halo universe and whitnessing the awesomeness of the Hell Jumpers and Spartans from a different perspective. That would be sweet. I hope 343 industries does a good job though. I love Bungie's halo and i play halo because it is and always will be the great experience of the franchise but i would like to see a very different styles halo if it came from a different developer.... and then Bungie can make Halo 4 10 years from now lol

Well, all those tie-in novels/comics of Halo really fleshes out the series.

Halo's Ending > Halo 3's Ending > Mass Effect 1's Ending > Halo 2's tears.

Though what was so deep about ME1 again? Story felt a bit jumpy from what I remember.

Huh? I admit, the Elite butt grab scene was crazy sexy, but I don't know why you'd put any of those above Mass Effect's final battle.

Seriously, I can't believe that Halo 4 is STILL being made by Bungie.

I think it's better that people know beforehand :lol I'm not THAT bad, but definitely not near the level of some of the HaloGAF'ers.

Anyone else up for it?

I'm sure that this is really LTTP, but I replayed The Storm again over the weekend and came across a weird little poster in the ship where the Scarab encounter is. Anyone got info on who this is and what the joke is supposed to be (if there is one)?

Bungie's honor has been besmirched.

In 2005, when gentle brontosaurs still roamed, we engaged in an ill-conceived "Hump Day Challenge" against Bungie that resulted in our utter dissolution. Does beating someone at a game which you, yourself invented represent authentic valor? It's an open question.

Beat us they did, though, and even in the year of our lord 2010 we could still feel the sting of their lash, the red heat of their brand. Five years hence, when the shame of it hung like an anvil about the neck, when the disapproving looks from greengrocers could no longer be borne, the gauntlet was thrown. The game? Table Tennis, which we didn't invent. Based purely on our match-day performance, though, you might think we had.

We augured through their roster, boring them out, collecting useful compounds and expelling the rest as a greasy exhaust. Let me offer an excerpt from my own game: I drew my racket across him in the Diving Swallow Style, and the gash in his belly yawned, dumping five pounds of steaming chitlins on the floor. "Get your intestines and get out of here, " I said, gesturing at his intestines and then the door.

Five games in, we had won four of them - which meant we had won the challenge. The last two opponents were visibly shaken, and with reason - theirs was a wholly justified breed of horror. Even victory would bring them no solace. They were like two escape pods, their boosters firing at the absolute threshold of their performance to escape the shredding wake of a stellar shockwave.

Spoiler warning: they did not escape. Six games to one. Penny Arcade.

So let all who claim some skill upon the four-quarter table come forth! Let those who dream of victory be known to us; such dreams are our meat, the cries of the vanquished are as sweet wine. Squirm from your burrows you wretches, you villains, you less than human things! Gaze upon the bright spires and splendid arcs of holy Arcadia!

Yeah. For as much of a Halo fan as I am, there's no way any ending to any Halo game beats ME1's ending.

GhaleonEB said:
So not having played through any Fallout games, or the first Mass Effect, which would I be more lost in, ME2 or Fallout 3? Any recommendation in general of one over the other?
I'd suggest getting ME2. The shooting in Fallout 3 is kind of weak unless you use the VATS system (even then, you aren't really doing the shooting yourself). I'd really recommend Mass Effect 2 as it greatly improves over the original in terms of combat and UI.

One thing about the combat, though: there's definitely a Gears of War influence that can be felt, but it's not quite the same.

Of course, if you have a DS, you could always wait for the next Pokemon game. :p
