The Baden-Württemberg safe haven for refugees houses 170 residents who are now gripped by fear
A live hand grenade was hurled towards a refugee camp in Germany as anti-migrant violence continues to increase.
The horrifying attack took place just after midday at the Baden-Württemberg hostel.
It houses 170 refugees who have fled terror at the hands of Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.
The suspected attackers hurled a grenade, which had had its pin removed, towards the building.
However it did not explode and no one was injured.
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, reacting to an increase in violence against migrants in Germany, said the incident was "unacceptable".
He added that the attacks were fuelled by "hatred", and expressed concern that the violence has "crept into parts of the mainstream of society".
The national mood in Germany was one of anger following the New Year's Eve violence in Cologne.
A police report of the evening confirmed that rampant sexual assaults on women by gangs of young migrant men.
Responding to criticism, German Chancellor Merkel said that Europe was "vulnerable" in the refugee crisis because it was not yet in control of the situation.
