Just looked at my clock and realized that today is the 10th anniversary of the original PlayStation's release in Japan. Wow! Happy birthday! Woo-hoo! U R NOT E! etc. etc.

Lots of fond memories spring to mind when I think about this momentus occasion, but one thought in particular stands out far above the rest:

SHIT. I'm getting old.

That's how I felt when the remastered Downward Spiral came out in 5.1. It's the 10th anniversary edition. 10th ... anniversary?

OH MAN I'M SO OLD. NIN is practically classic rock. :(

Hard to believe it's been that long already... I remember being happy when I got a launch-period Japanese PS1. Ridge Racer was all I needed. Then I got Toshinden and Moto Toon GP...wow...On that note, I really wish PD would stop the madness with all of these ridiculous GT games...where's the MTGP love?

I remember walking out of the department store with a 2600 and Asteroids. Ten years is nothin'!

Heh, I barely, hazily remember getting my VCS for my birthday back in '79...I cried until it was revealed to be in the closet of my parents' bedroom. Yeah, I was a little whiny bitch waiting to be addicted to games.

I remember renting Atari ST games from a computer store back in the day. Like '86? I think thats right. Battletech, Sundog, Time Bandits, Roadwar Europa, etc...

Ahh the classics.

I remember owning an SNES for a long time, I didn't get a PS1 until like 97 or 98.

I very well could have bought an n64 or saturn (well thats not true, I hated saturn) instead. I am glad that I did not. I am feeling a rush of memories coming back right now. The first time I played Metal Gear Solid..., the hours dedicated towards playing Madden, the awe and wonder of FF7... my initial dissapointment with Chrono Cross..

Heh, speaking of Toshinden, I remember being the only person (that I knew of at least) who insisted that it was garbage shortly after it came out in japan. Everyone else was like "oh, but teh graphics are great!!". Then when it came out in the US all the people who said I was nuts were like "dude, you were right!". It's like it took the American release for them to realize it, even though they had been playing it for months.

I still bought it on launch day though. Along with SF:The Movie game. :lol :lol :lol

My first PSX games were Toshinden, Ridge Racer, SF The Movie, MK3, and Gunner's Heaven.

There weren't very many titles available for the US launch.

They can revive MTGP for the PSP.

Screw that. I want a home console game for part three.

Yeah, Toshinden was crap...as was the rest of the series, really. At the time, though, it looked amazing...but was clunky as all hell. Sad as it is, I probably played the game as much as I did VF for the Saturn at the time.

Gunner's Heaven was OK...

ah. i remember gawking at toshinden and ridge racer in import stores. that was pretty cool. playstation rocks.

Is PS2 really 1000 times more powerful than PSone?

Have games really come that far since PSone?

Just curious.

PSOne was maxed at 360k polygons per second theoretical, PS2 has 75 million theoretical.

Only 1 measure, but that would be ~200x more powerful

Ten years, man. Wow.

I didn't fall for the hype then, either. I got my Playstation in '97. I didn't even like it too much, I've faired much better with the PS2.

Happy Birthday PS1. Time sure fucking flies, I had to use my student loan (I was in first year university) to get the PS1 with Ridge Racer. Ahh, the great memories.

I remember seeing Toshinden for the first time and thinking, 'omg, how can graphics get better than this.' :lol

Can someone explain to me what the 'U R NOT E' thing is?

There were hidden messages in the PSX print & TV ads which flashed those letters & the launch date, I believe.

Think: "You are not ready".

It was kind of stupid, but not as dumb as Polygon Man, the first Playstation mascot.

I always thought it was just l33t-speak for 'you are naughty'. By the by, I was 12 when the PS1 was released. I remember eagerly playing the demo unit and Battle Arena Toshinden at the Ventures down the road. Ventures, by the way, was a Target-like store that went out of business, at least in my area. That and browsing the magazine racks for hours while my mom shopped for, well, whatever it is moms shop for. Ah, good times, good times...perhaps still current times for some here. See: http://forums.gaming-age.com/showthread.php?t=25908 ;)

Ah fond memories of seeing my first PlayStation at an anime con, where we spent hours playing Ridge Racer and Twinbee Puzzle. I didn't get my own PlayStation until it hit $200, at which point I picked it up with Ridge Racer and played the hell out of it all summer. *sniff* Ah, memories...

Oh, and another big thanks to John TV for making me feel really fucking old.

I was into my Saturn so I didn't get a Playstation at launch. I forget what finally made me take the plunge there, but I think it was something like a year after Final Fantasy VII hit...

"U R NOT E"

Such a cool marketing campaign.

:lol It took me TEN years just to figure it out!!! :lol Serriously I just now got it!!! :D

Edit: I take it its "You Are Naughty!"

No. It's "You are not Ready". :lol

That makes No sense!!! I always thought it was that but, that makes NO sense, so I'm gonna believe that it was You are naughty! :D

Ah, the memories.

"You mean I need a 'memory card' to save my game?" (It was a totally new thing for those of us that didn't have Neo-Geo experience, anyway.)

I remember the day I heard that you could take the Ridge CD out and put in an audio CD of your own...cRaZy!

:lol That was definitely me, my mom was so ticked off that I forgot to tell her a memory card was needed to enjoy FF7.

And I was weirded out completely when I rented Monster Rancher for PSX and tried it with audio CDs. Especially when some of the monsters seemed to be logical choices for the content of the CD that was put in.

What do you mean it makes no sense? It was used during the launch campaign as in "YOU ARE NOT READY to play Ridge Racer, so have some fun with Galaxian in the meantime."

I was 12 too, just shy of 13...I remember when my friend got it Oct. '95. We had Tekken, Toshinden, Wipeout, maybe some others, and the demo disk(played the heck out of Jumping Flash). That christmas we had our sleepover and by then my friend also had Rayman, Warhawk, Twisted Metal, Loaded(I think)...those poor games, once we popped in Twisted Metal, that was it, we abused the hell out of that game. Then just before my birthday(Jan. 26th) he got Street Fighter Alpha(import i think)...Good God we played the shit out of that...I was so into that game Summer of '94, I couldn't believe it was home in arcade perfect form. That sealed the deal for me and i just had to have a PS....I eventually got one of my own in March, with Twisted Metal and SFA. Another friend who had a Saturn had X-Men:COTA and i remember praying those shitty Chips&Bits ads were right and that it was coming to the Playstation...didn't know that it would be YEARS down the line...Darkstalkers had to do.

I also loved those early redbook audio games that allowed you to insert a music CD and play your own music. It was like a pre-XBOX, lol. I remember playing WipEout with a music CD, and it even had a hollow/echo effect while going through tunnels.
