Hard Drive Transfering Program?

Status

I'm in the process for taking out 60 gig hardrive I have on this computer. I already have a 120 gig.

Now, I'm working off the 60 gig. I wanna dump that on the 120 gig. Any program recommendations for doing this?

Ban this filthy pirate.

Huh pirate!!!? What are you talking about? You can get Norton ghost free with just about every MoBo you buy now a days, as well as with some HDs. As for banning someone isn't there a standing by law or something about members telling mods and administrators how they should do their jobs. I could have swore I had read something like that in a thread while I was waiting for my account to be approved.

So you're suggesting he go out and buy another motherboard or hard drive just to get the program for free then? This makes no sense.

"Cloning a Computer With Free Software"

It uses Unix and the 'dd' command. I think the link here:

Will give you a bootable Linux distro that fits on a CD so that you can clone it. Good luck.

BTW, you're Muncheese right? Sup with that nick man??

Thanks.

I'm kinda looking for something inside of windows though. I remember doing something similar but for the love of me I can't remember what program it was.

Yeah, these are the effects of wanting a name change. Not quite the name I wanted. =(

There are no cloning utilities built into Windows. The closest thing you can get is the Windows Backup software (which isn't too bad in XP) that will backup most of your data files and what not.

It will be easier if you install another OS onto the 120gig drive, then connect your current one as a slave drive and copy files over via explorer.

Ok thanks for clearing things up with your nick. :lol I only recognize you from your avatar.

Er, it is probably a bad idea to simply use dd to copy a drive's image to another that is a different size, let alone different geometry. You could really fuck stuff up that way (not on the original drive).

There is probably a better way (previously mentioned recovery console here, but you're too limited by it to do so).

Would making an image of the first drive, and then putting the image on second drive be better, or is that still fubaring it up?

I'd much rather not start from zero on a os, again. =/

Eh, I just started again with a new HD today.

Just copied my data files to a networked PC and am sending them all to my new HD now. Reinstalling programs won't be a big issue.

To each his own though, I guess.
