I've heard everyone gushing about Spit Out The Bone. How was it?
Just like on Death Magnetic, it's a thrasher as the last song. Much better than My Apocalypse though. Vocal harmonies do wonders for these songs and make them feel much livelier. Rob gets to shine in this one as well.

I guess the best way one can describe is Load meets Black meets Death Magnetic, with some hints and dashes of Master.

Also, Hardwired is not representative of the album at all. I'll be Ok if that song isn't even on here.

I had no idea people didn't like My Apocalypse until these threads about Hardwired. You're all crazy. It's my favorite song off Death Magnetic.

If Hardwired were representative of the album, Spit out the Bone would be the crescendo and this album would be catapulted to the heights of the originals.

So in the SKOM documentary or somewhere else I remember James saying that when they were making Load / ReLoad the stuff just kept coming to him and that they had a lot of stuff, maybe there's some leftovers from that time on this album.

Insane.

But I have heard people say it's better than Damage Inc and Dyers Eve...wouldn't go that far.

people are comparing it to those two though?

Haven't heard it yet (SOON) but no single release in your list? Wow, the album has to be pretty amazing.

I like all the singles, maybe its the newness of these songs. But I like these more, and I really really like these songs.

Dream No More is everything that "The Thing That Should Not Be" should be (pun intended) and DNM shits on Thingy from several hundred heights.
Am I Savage just has a mean groove, its heavy, I like james' attitude in his vocal delivery
Here Comes Revenge just rips
I don't even need to say anything about Spit Out the Bone
Halo On Fire is unquestionably one of the best songs they've ever written

Can't compare any of the songs to the first 4 albums. Just not fair that way. Those songs are engraved in all our heads for years and they kick fucking ass too. This will take a while to get even remotely close.

I'm pretty sure they've said there was nothing left over from the Load sessions. We talked about it recently here, but in SKoM James also talks about how they beat every idea they had into a song.

It'll be interesting to see what all is included with the Loads when they get to them with their deluxe edition remaster box sets in a few years. Kill and Ride were packed with extras, but Lars has said there's far more shit out there for the later stuff, not surprisingly.

Honestly. If HTSD came out after AJFA instead of Black, A lot of people would be a lot more happy.

I like Black album as much as the next guy, but these songs are better than the majority of those imho

I so wanna have a look in Lars infamous vault. :p

Spit Out the Bone...goddamn, wasn't expecting that. Love the slow heavy riffage near the end.

They really sound like they're in their zone on this album.

It's what you get when you're not pressured by fans day in and day out about making another Master of Puppets album and having James start drinking again, it's just dumb.

So for those who e heard this album already, its better than death magnetic?

Depends on what you're after. It's better produced than DM, but its really different than DM so its hard to compare. It's really a preference thing. But HTSD is far more straightforward and less lets shove everything into a song because we can.

On first listen, yes. Production-wise, it destroys DM, and there are two super fast tracks on the album. But it's a combo of Load, some Black, some Master here and there, with Kill em All's intensity in two songs.

Yes, and I really like DM.

But the production, vocals and playing is miles better.

Cool thanks, can't wait.

Listening to the entire album now, up to Dream No More.

Holy shit.

So this is basically the lost Metallica album that they were heading towards in the late 90s/early 00s that was basically going to be a heavier Load.

Hmmm. Well. I'd say there are about 6 good to great songs here.

Atlas, Rise!
Moth Into Flame
Halo on Fire
Here Comes Revenge
Am I Savage?
Spit Out the Bone

Though I'm pretty "Meh" about the album as a whole. I really really want to like Dream No More, but it's just boring. And that's kind of the album as a whole. Granted, this is only my first listen. Some of this stuff may grow on me. But yeah, I'm pretty disappointed in the album overall. The production is fantastic, James vocal performance may be the best he's ever done. And those 6 songs are pretty good. If that was the album, it'd be great. It'd be focused. But... blech whatever I'll stop rambling.

I am unable to write up impressions of the entire album because Spit out the bone just killed me. I have no bones to spit out. They are all crushed under this beast of a song. I know it sound hyperbolic but this track would stand tall between Battery and Master of puppets. It's that good! My body was not ready...
