I still can't get over how good The Het's voice is on this album. One minor criticism I have is that Kirk really has been phoning it in for a while now.

Heard it thrice now. Some thoughts

+ Halo on Fire, Dream No More, Moth Into Flame, Here Comes Revenge, Spit Out the Bone, Am I Savage?, are the standout tracks for me. Confusion is good too, but less so than the ones mentioned.

+ Production is ace.

+ James sounds excellent here. Way, way better than DM

+ The Load, Black Album vibes are welcomed

- Would have liked a proper ballad. There's no instrumental either, and I miss that.

- Disappointing solos

- CD 2 is weaker than CD 1, but made up with Spit and Revenge. Should have been a single disc, in my opinion. It's 1 hr 17 mins, so I don't see why not.

He lost all his riffs which is why he has no writing credits, but even then he could've done multiple takes and picked the best or composed some but he said he wanted to be spontaneous.

Yeah that's true. As I said before I love the wah wah and I like the sound of his solos (similar to Load/Reload) but they're not that varied on HTSD. There are some good solos don't get me wrong but we all know he can do way better.

Spit Out The Bone....

Good lord that was one hell of a way to close the album to those who are waiting for it to drop you are in for a treat probably the best Metallica song since the 90's (i'm a big fan of Load, Death Magnetic etc)

I'll tell you the highlight of this album is Hetfields vocals he is absolutly on point on this album! vocal harmonies, grit, shouty stuff etc really really knocked it out of the park!

Great album i hope they keep making more but if this was to be their last album then they definitely go out with a bang!

Everyone compares Spit out the Bone to Damage Inc or Dyers Eve....but I don't know why honestly. It has more in common with Disposable Heroes.

But maybe I'm just wrong, lol.

I would also like to give credit to Lars who seem to actually give a fuck this time, now how this translates to a live performance is yet to be seen.

I retract my previous statement. Only two duds on this IMO, ManUnKind and Murder One. Neither of which are terrible or even bad. They just don't click with me as songs though they each have their moments.

So after a few listens I'm hearing it. And it's a great record. Worthy of their discography for sure. I'm not sure how I'd rank it. But it's definitely up there.

The th sound.
Cuh-thu-lu
Not cuh-tu-lu

Not according to Lovecraft.

The name of the hellish entity was invented by beings whose vocal organs were not like man's, hence it has no relation to the human speech equipment. The syllables were determined by a physiological equipment wholly unlike ours, hence could never be uttered perfectly by human throats ... The actual sound -- as nearly as any human organs could imitate it or human letters record it -- may be taken as something like Khlûl'-hloo, with the first syllable pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, hence the h represents the guttural thickness.

Yeah well
He's dead, so what does he know.

Wait... Which one is Lords of Summer? Spit Out the Bone?
It's on the third disc which hasn't leaked yet. It's a bonus track. It was originally released in 2014 as a teaser for the album but removed from the final version for not fitting the tone (too happy ) so it became a bonus track. But there is some intense double bass on it reserved for the likes of Chris Adler and Dave Lombardo

Just ran through the album for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. It sounded well produced and James really sounds good. I'll have to run it through my car audio system to really get a feel for it though. About to drive around town with my windows down blasting a new Metallica album. It never gets old.

Unless something has seriously changed with LoS since the 2014 version, there's definitely not any intense double bass on it, the pace and intensity is about on par with their cover of Overkill. Hell, he had no trouble doing it live during the 2014 shows either.

After listening to the singles (which I really enjoyed btw) I became worried this would be all fast songs, no groove. As a fan of 90s Metallica it's been tough to watch them abandon basically any semblance of groove for the last 15 years.

Wow was I wrong - the groove is back. Honestly -Human and No Leaf Clover would've fit perfectly on this album. Doesn't sound like they're trying to regain anything, but push forward into new territory.

Listening to this for the first time now. Loved all the singles so was going in with high hopes already, but Dream No More has just surpassed everything. That fucking groove!

I've listened to it.
Trust me
It's changed.

One thing to be cautious about is that while it is a great album, it is not like the first four albums much. Most songs are mid tempo, quite Load-like.

The Bone is just something else though. Why the fuck are there no more songs like this in the album? I did not even know they can play like this anymore.

That'll be ok, I rather like the Load albums! And I actually love DM. So this sounds great. Gonna try to listen tonight.

Never thought about this. You're absolutely right.

edit: Now that we're dead is the "hidden gem" so far (for me at least). So cool. This song could be on Reload.

The verse in Halo on fire....so simple but so fucking great and melodic. It's beautiful

THIS FUCKING SONG IS THE BEST THING SINCE ONE

edit: I'm feeling like I travelled back in time....like 20 years ago...first time listening to Load. It's wonderful.

edit 2: Confusion is one of my favorites. The verse.....Woooooow...and the riff (reminds me of Rammstein btw...don't know why)

Well, to sum it up: Metallica is back.

Murder One intro = Fade to Black

Who else thought about this? ^^

edit: Spit out the bone really is something else. It's like they found an unreleased song from 1985.

Loving the use of reverb on this album. Especially in Bone with the kicks at the start.

And I just wanna say once again how fucking kickass that song is. Can't wait for Monday, gonna be a good workout session. :p

I haven't payed attention to the album since the first single (liked it), just saw it leaked and decided to see what you guys are saying.

I did not expect this kind of response. Will definitely buy on release day.

Listened to the first disc this morning, and just finished up the second disc. So far I like the second one better, but that can still change. Hard to judge on the first run. Spit out the bone though. That's something else, so good.

Interesting. The consensus is that the first is better than the second, but of course it's all subjective.

The songs on the second disc will grow...They're amazing but you have to listen to them more than once.

edit: Spit out the Bone is the exception...this song is just something else.

I'll see how I feel about it after my commute to work later, I was pretty tired this morning and can't remember much of the first disc to be honest.

Actually, after one listen Here Comes Revenge might be my favorite track of the album so far. But damn... I expected this to be OK, but looks like it really exceeded expectations (although that might still be hype, haha).

Now the question for everyone is: what is your low point of the album? I don't think Am I Savage does that much for me as the rest, although I kinda can't recall what I thought about Now That We're Dead (might have something to do with the fact that it's 3:30 here and I'm tired).

Spit out the Bone and Halo on Fire are the stand outs.

Disc 2 will take some more listening to click though. I feel like people might only like Disc 1 more right now because we have already heard half of it with the 3 previously released songs.

I feel like most of these tracks could be a minute or so shorter. There's no need for Bone to be 7 minutes long.

I think they do a OK job with that. The songs dont feel overly long like St Anger songs.

I read a review that HWTSD is the best they've done in 25 years.

I completely agree.

Disc 1 is much stronger then Disc 2 (Spit out the Bone being the exception) but overall this is exactly the follow up to Black/Load that should have happened (for the record I really like St Anger and loved Death Magnetic).

Thoughts are all over the place here.

HWTSD, Atlas, Moth....out in the wild. Nothing to be said.

Dream No More is heavy as fuck....Confusion has a fuckin awesome riff, Here Comes Revenge flows amazing well, maUNkind is something that needs to be heard a few times before it grows on you I think.

Halo on Fire is truly something I never expected from MetallicA....very different in a good way.

Am I Savage? has some really interesting tempo changes. Murder One is so so. Now that We're Dead sounds like it should have been on Black.

Spit out the Bone is fuckin LIT. Easily could have been on MoP or RTL.

Might not be their absolute best but fuck if isn't their best since Black/Load. It's totally worth a listen to at least once if your are a Metallica fan of any of their eras (KEA-AJFA, Black-ReLoad, SA-DM).

Can't wait to see some of the shit live, especially Spit Out The Bone.

Fucking Metallica is back!
