Really liking how audible the bass is on this album.
I had to turn the bass setting on my car stereo down so I could crank Spit Out The Bone at the volume it deserves.

There are major differences in songwriting and feel between the Black album and what came before itThere are Metallica fans who HATES the black album. I mean wtf
I mean, I don't hate it but I feel like more than half is filler tbch. There are Metallica fans who HATES the black album. I mean wtf
Spin mag apparently rated it pretty low. And called Orion and Disposable filler lol
Spit out the bone....

WOW. That's the shit I wanna hear out of metallica. Definitely my favorite song from the album.
Had a chance to listen a bit more. I think there's 4 good songs on this album, the rest are pretty forgettable to me.
I like hardwired, atlas rise, moth and spit out the bone. I'm probably the only person that thinks the title track is the best song on this record, even though it has a dumb chorus. Spit out the bone might be the most inspired thing they've recorded in years.
People always complain. I'm pretty sure there are Metallica fans who hate MOP.

Heh, I think Hardwired is the worst song of this album. That doesn't mean it's bad. I really like it but the rest is so damn good.
Opinions, of course.
For what it's worth, I don't consider it a bad album. If the whole record was more in the vein of the title track and SOTB, I'd probably love it. I haven't really liked much of what they've done since Justice though. But like I said, SOTB brings a glimmer of their glory days and is great to hear.
I'm kinda happy that it's mostly mid tempo. It helps set it apart from DM and their early stuff and its weight sets it apart from Load/Reload, all of the riffs are great but if there's anything I feel it lacks are any huge wow moments, its almost too straightforward overall but I think this is more of a Kirk thing. No mind blowing solos, but James really shines here both vocally and rhythmically. Outside of Hardwired, the lyrics are pretty decent and inoffensive. No "make ya more strong" moments. After giving it a few runs, the only song I can't get into is ManUNkind, it's too jumpy. Now That We're Dead is feeling a bit better to me too.
Overall solid record. As of right now. For me.
First three>>AJfA>HTSD>DM=Black>Load/Reload>St.Anger
That might be it. The whole album sounds like Load and Reload (James voice, the wah wah, the groove, etc) and a mix of MOP (Spit out the Bone) and Black album.
Hardwired sounds like it would fit on KEA, imo. No melodies, just straight to the point...like Whiplash. Very simple, short ...but good.
I can see why they decided to put Hardwire first and SOTB last. Everything between is 90's Metallica. If you don't like 90' Metallica you're probably just loving Hardwired an Spit out the Bone.
I thought the same at first but after a few more listenings I have to admit that there are great solos by Kirk. Halo on fire and Spit out the Bone for example (of course). But he does some cool melodic stuff similar to Load/ Reload. It's not his best work of course. I love both songs btw (ManUNkind and Now that we're dead).
Yeah I was talking with a friend and said confusion, murder One and ManUNkind were the weakest only to have him tell me they were the best, I've heard another call confusion a 10/10.I love how everyone has different favorite songs...that means the album is great. Murder One...I love it ^^

As for it being like reload, eh that's a bit too far imo.
It's more like a heavier black album. Feels like it bridges the gap between justice and black.
Hello darkness say goodbyeeeeeeee

I think there's so much Justice in there that's its hard to hear anything else but I could see that in like the verseAtlas, Rise sounds like a Merciful Fate song.
Hardwired...for Hot Takes
Disc One
Hardwired - Liked it when they first released, still do
Atlas, Rise - Much more favorable impression of it than when I first heard it, enjoyed it
Now That We're Dead - Yo fuck this, garbage
Moth Into Flame - Good still
Dream No More - Wishes it was John Bush era Anthrax, not nearly as good. Mediocre
Halo Of Fire - Pretty damn good, really dig it. Doesn't sound derivative, like some of the songs I've liked so far do at times
Disc Two
Confusion - I think I dig this? Kind of boring but not terrible? Meh?
ManUNkind - Glad we got to fit the stupid Am I Evil snare roll thing into 2 song intros in a row, let's hope "Am I Savage" stopped at the name. This sounds like a cover song that they "Metallica'd" up....meh.
Here Comes Revenge - More what I expect from later Metallica but I dig it
Am I Savage? - Ooooh this intro is nice. Transitions into excellent swinging riff. Didn't expect this to be one of the better tracks on the album lol. Probably the best riffs thus far. Don't know if I should call them "Mercyful Fate-esque" but that's what I'm feeling right now
Murder One - I can dig it. Ok these vocals/lyrics are losing me. Yeah you lost me. Onto the song with all the hype
Spit Out The Bone - ......these riffs are fucking weak. Main riff sounds like a local band. Verse sounds like a Sum 41 song or something. Chorus part is very cool. First solo part is neat. Double bass melodic part is nice. Heavier parts are nice. Fast solo break is whatever.
Best songs - Am I Savage?, Halo Of Fire, Hardwired, Atlas, Moth
Worst - Now That We're Dead
Overall - It's ight
People hated Hardwired and called it derivative but apparently Spit Out The Bone's "baby's first thrash riff after listening to Metallica" is some hot shit. As though anyone who's ever played metal guitar has not accidentally played that riff when messing aroundI'm triggered.

Now That We're Dead is one of the worst Metallica songs they've written outside of St. Anger.
I really dig the sound of Bush-era Anthrax, despite only really digging Sound Of White Noise from a songwriting standpoint. Hetfield is doing a John Bush impression while Lars apparently picked up Charlie Benante's kick along to the chugs jam beats that really completes the illusion
I don't hate it either, simply responding to the hype. Hah.Honestly imo.
Dream No More>>>Sad But True>>>>>>>>Thingy
I don't love Spit Out The Bone either, but I definitely don't hate it.
Also NTWD>Don't Tread On Me,Of Wolf and Man, through the never, trapped under ice, plenty of stuff from load/reload, all of St.Anger
Hardwired is definitely generic but I can get down with jamming power chords easier than "hurr durr open low string with single note melodic parts like MOP"I haven't even heard the album, but if Hardwired is one of the best songs and Bone has weak riffs, then Bone must have the shittiest riffs in history. Because Hardwired is the definition of generic riff. And I like that song.

Better than OWAM and Trapped? No. No no no no no no no

The feel of both songs are similar though, Spit Out The Bone goes to more interesting places but when people say a Metallica song is on the level of the first four there's some expectations that come with that. I don't think it meets at all, doesn't mean it isn't good but yea

Only a few more days anyway, but it's worth the wait. Can't wait to get the album in good quality too.And no sigh of Lords of Summer 2016 yet

I'm speaking solely to the melodic main riff. The chorus is fantastic and actually on par with their best, where it goes from there is great, but the intro through the verse just doesn't really do it for meHardwired is more "baby's first thrash", but opinions I guess.

So they still haven'T released a making of video for Atlas Rise huh?
I hope they do more of those
Someone on Reddit said they're releasing all the making of's on friday
Oh nice!
Also, this thread reminded me of that hilarious Jim Breuer story about Lars and the knapsack: https://youtu.be/m3m6RM_PTLg
