Moere here : http://www.jeux-france.com/news7679_harvest-moon-ds.html

The first pic (house) looks great. Really nice colors on the house. The last pic (with the map) is awesome and is what I would expect from the DS. The middle pic is just depressing though. But 2 out of 3 is pretty good, hopefully the 2nd pic is just a bad screenshot of a not-so-interesting enviroment. Harvest Moon games have always been fun and this shouldn't be any different. :D

Actually even the GBA Harvest Moon looks better due to Mode 7 effects and artistic detail developers learned since the SNES days.
Don't wake them up from their dream world.

Whoops I was confused! I was reading it in reverse (reply mode), I meant the 2nd pic is great and the first pic is depressing. :D

I'm picking this one up; my only Handheld HM was like 2, and it just wasn't complete enough. This looks like a really cool and interesting addition to the series that I think will be quite good. Graphics don't matter in Harvest Moon games. They could, of course, be better, but they don't have to be. It's a farming game. Rather than try to push N64 graphics, they seemed to have pushed for more active environments and better atmosphere, and I respect that decision.

so is the game two screens high or is the 2nd screen a map?

From the pics the 2nd screen at the bottom is an interactive map for the touchscreen. Pretty awesome. It probably has management features and stuff to so you can manage stuff while still exploring around. Note the icon at the bottom left in the two pics which display an area with no character, and you'll see the same icon on the large map pic as one of the selectable icons. This is the kind of DS usage that we need, something interactive and cool what isn't gimmicky. :D

This looks sweet, but if Animal Crossing DS makes it out first, this is not gonna fare so well, especially since it doesn't appear to have any wireless stuff going on (no antenna icon at least)

They're different beasts, for me. Similar, but not identical. I'm buying both, although there will be issues if they release at the same time...which I doubt, as Animal Crossing DS hasn't even seen a Japanese date pop up.

SNES is more capable than this.

Are you fucking stupid? Look at the SNES screenshot that someone posted. Also, realize that the *GBA* Harvest Moon game had *Playstation 1* graphics (it was a PORT/REMAKE OF THE PLAYSTATION HARVEST MOON GAME ANYWAY)

How are these games managing to use both screens as one? I thought one of the screens were of lower quality compared to the other?

I hope to god watering plants is easier with a touch screen, and that whoever publishes it here does a better job of translating it.

GBA version looks better. Why don't they make it with 3D characters? At least take advantage of some of the system's boosted power.

both screens are the same resolution on the DS (256*192 - exactly the same as the snes)

as for the person who compared DS to SNES and claimed the SNES was better - you really are a misguided.

The GC version looked like a n64 game.
I swear this thread is lowering my IQ.

They should have made this game 3D. HM's architecture has always been quite simple in terms of geometry, and they could get away with modelling the crops really low poly.

Ah.. The n64 game really had its own charm :/ Curse the boy that stole my copy and erased my save file! Got it back but it was gone!

The Nintendo DS has enough power to make good 3D games but...

Harvest Moon DS --> 2D
Castlevania DS --> 2D

Developpers have to change their way of working now, we're not on GBA...

Well it's not 2D that really makes me mad but espacialy the level of graphics very low compared to what the machine can make...

I prefer a 2D Harvest Moon on DS, though an isometric perspective would've been nice.

A version of A Wonderful Life is coming to PSP, right? Or did I imagine that?

Uh, doesn't look like an SNES game. After the Castlevania debacle, I can't believe you people play games. You have no idea what goes into sprites.

Now, HM DS doesn't look very impressive for the DS, but this isn't Square making the game. It's Victor. They arent' exactly known for their graphical prowess. Even in the SNES era.

Do we have real actual proof of this in terms of software produced as far? :P

So.... they have a choice of being in the group of first-gen DS games using horrible N64 level 3D that doesn't impress anyone and looks completely outclassed and backward compared with anything on the PSP, and they have the choice of making first-gen DS games with 2D that looks better than any GBA title and would likely be compared by consumers and critics alike favorably as superior to the GBA.

Let's face it.

2D DS game = compared with GBA = looks better! looks great!
3D DS game = compared with PSP = looks like crap! N64 hahahaha!

That's the mindset right now, why would developers want to do something STUPID? :lol

Super Mario 64 DS looks really good and DS can make better graphics so i can imagine (why not...) a new Zelda DS using maybe some celshaded graphics or other 3D...

I hope this turns out well. I skipped the GBA game (games?) and was pretty let down by A Wonderful Life. AWL added a lot of cool stuff to the series, like seeing your kid grow up, new house extensions, etc, but it totally lost the charm of the N64 game, and was way too long. I didn't even get halfway through the game's ten years before I gave up.

I agree that the graphics could be better, but I do think that they're above SNES quality. It's my hope that the DS will end up with games that have Four Swords -level 2d graphics, with scaling and effects. Then again, I would think the DS could handle graphics of Harvest Moon 64's level quite easily.

But the question is, how does it stack up?

Banned. I'm sick to death of PSP vs DS screenshot comparisons. Pointless. STOP.

I'm simply explaining to him WHY developers would choose to go the 2D route on the DS. Why are PSP vs DS screenshot comparisons pointless? If they're to show a valid point instead of dissing either system, I don't how they're any less valid than GC/PS2/X-Box screenshot comparisons. We do that all the time too to compare ports and to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of various systems. Or are you insecure about something? :P
