WHO DEY!?
I am in my final month of training. It's gone well so far. Only a few sore knees occasionally and blisters which are na enormous pain in the ass right now.

If a mod could fix my shit spelling in the subject name I would appreciate it. It should be "Has anyone here run a marathon before?" :)

I did run the Paris marathon a few years ago when I was in good shape. With a good training in preparation for the event it's a very gratifying experience. The hardest time I had was at about 35 km (about 23 miles?), I was exhausted and nearly stopped. I'm glad I didn't.
What time do you aim for? I did about 3 hours and 34 minutes.
Make sure you drink and take some sugar at every stop you can, and if it's hot a sponge full of water is great.

Hell no dude, I'm a plodding ass. I'll probably finish around 4:30. I've been told the "halfway point" is about 20 miles, and from there on out it's primarily a mental grind. I finished an 18 mile run this pastweekend, and after a fallback week will be doing 20 for my final long run before the event (May 1st).

It is so much work- I am looking forward to the gratifying feeling you speak of.

I'm probably gonna register for the upcoming Vancouver marathon--it'll be my first too. I'm not really into training, but I usually run an accumulated distance of 10 miles/day. My uncle will be running as well, so we're gonna start some sort of training regime to prepare. When I go for my long runs, it takes me around 1:20 minutes to complete 12.5 - 14 miles, and by that point, I'm feeling great due to the rush of endomorphines the body experiences at around 45 minutes (the runners high = teh kewl) so I'm pretty sure I could run a marathon in a little over 3 hours. Best of luck!

Marathons seem a little extreme to me, but hey anything that motivates people to get in great shape is a good thing. The training seems like it would be the hardest part, good luck. :)

I remember looking into this, and I'm pretty sure the maximum amount of energy your body can easily metabolize can carry you roughly 20-23 miles. I don't really remember the specifics, but there is a biological reason that it becomes incredibly difficult around the 20-23 mile mark.

Most I've done is a 10k. Would like to run a marathon sometime in the future though. Just to tell people you've done it is impressive.

Thanks for the well wishes. I am nervous about it already!

Truffle, I live in fairfield, right near Jungle Jim's.

Also, Agent D, a 10k is impressive, believe me. Most people can't even run a mile if they are not in shape.

Did the Seattle Half-Marathon (13.x miles) a few years ago. Came in around 1:51. Wouldn't be able to do it now, though at one time I could just sort of pace myself at 7-8 mph and feel like I could go indefinitely.

I used to run long distance races in school until a really bad injury. Quite honestly, the adrenaline rush that comes before, during and after a race is probably my favorite sensation in the world. Whether it was that last leg of a half mile at a meet or a 10+ mile Saturday practice, I loved it all.

Anywho, I've missed that immensely for going on 6 or 7 years, and this summer I'm going to get back to training. I'll never be competitive like I used to be, but I just want that rush back. I'm gonna aim for marathons for something that I can do with others and still feel good about myself, if only because marathons are probably more about the communal sense of accomplishment than competition (unless you're one of those top few). I'm sure I'll get to timing myself in the half mile again, only to either be motivated or depressed, but running is something I love and I'd like to get back in a rhythm that I can maintain, more or less, for the next few decades of my life.

Besides, I'm really itching to do that Disney World marathon that gets to go behind-the-scenes ;)

I'm running in a 10km race at the end of May (any other Torontonians doing runTO?)
I'm horribly out of shape (haven't trained at all this year) and will probably collapse around the the 7km mark.

Long distance running is torture. But when you arrive at the finish line...you're really tired and feel like throwing up.

I think I could train myself to be able to run that (though I've never run that kinda distance before) - I will be participating in the bicycle marathon though on June 5th (will be my first one - starting at 25km and hoping I can finish that, hehe ^^)

U will hit the wall @ about 33 -35kms.

If u've noticed when u r running the first 400m hurts as your body gets into it, then @ 5k or so u change fuel from simple carbs to more complex carbs, then @ about 20 u run out of carbs (this why u load to delay this) and start burning fat, @ about 33k u start to run out of fat and your body starts eating muscle, (u hit the wall) this fucking hurts, alot. once u get thru that, u r OK and then the race ends.

Triathletes and bike riders get over this by eating during the race. A tour de france cyclist has a 15 course brekky, and lots of stuff on the bike + sports drinks and coke. (the coke is there 4 2 reasons, 1 quick energy boost @ 2 caffiene to give them a bounce). In a long tri u can't eat as much and the wall hits much earlier in the run.

Good luck

I once took place in a 80km march (not running just walking)...I abandoned at km 65 because my pal was severely injured in one foot. No marathons on my curriculum yet.

That's cool.
I was supposed to do the Ride for Heart (sponsored by Becel, a Margarine maker...hmm...) as well. But I'm kinda lacking a bike :p

I've run a couple of half marathons and have run longer distances, but not done the full distance.

As you know, its a battle with your mind. The trick is to keep on going, even when you give up. You've decided to give up and walk it...then keep on trotting.

Eating and drinking is key. Fuck the mp3 player or any tunes, it's all dead weight. You want to be as light as you can...

When you cross the line, you feel unstoppable. It's the rush among rushes.

Good luck.

Damn dude...Not a bad time at all. I just rand the LA marathon and I had a time a little over 5 hours. Then again the air is considerably thicker here if you get my meaning...

Marathon is the most hardest and boring physical activity there is. I do anything I can to avoid them, no offense to anyone.

Unfortunately, we had 2 every year during high school. Just 2 kilometers each but it was stil lenough to kill me everytime. I think my best was 14 minutes something and got worst as the years went by. Bad memories, really bad...

Hard? Yes.

Boring? Pretty much.

I trained for 6 months to run for 5 hours straight. Why? Just to say I've done it. Yeah I'm not going to run another marathon again. Not that it was a bad experience...I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it and now that I have it's time for me to move on to something else. Maybe a triathalon!!!

I don't mean to be picky but a marathon is by definition 26.2 miles (don't know the metric, I'm a filthy American).

The air in Cincinnati is shit in the summer but today was beautiful. Sunny and just under 60 degrees when I finished.

Thanks for everyone's well wishes!

Call it whatever you want, who the hell cares. Point is, 2 kilometers was hell for me so 42 kilometers just gives me nightmares and I was usually finishing with the 3-4 best time in my class. I remember the fat ones walking all the way, hilarious

Are you joking? No offense, but 14 minutes for 2km as one of the best in the class... that's horrendous. That's like, not even healthy.
