Has the Switch 2 lost its mobility?

Meanwhile some PC handheld companies think you just want to replace a desktop PC

What the hell is that?

The last trve portable gaming handheld was the New 3DS (non-XL). Clamshell design, perfectly pocketable without the need for a backpack. And the games designed for that portable gaming experience were perfect. Get on the metro, open it up, play for 20 minutes, then put it back in the pocket of your jeans. Repeat on the way home.

Everything post that is just not a truly useful handheld experience.

Don't worry. There will be a Lite version no doubt. You just have to be patient.

It is now in the same territory as the Steamdeck where it can only be used at home. Atleast for me. How do you see this?
To me size and weight are not the issue, it's ergonomics. I cannot see myself every playing the damn thing in handheld without some third party grips

I take my Switch and ROG Ally X with me everywhere I go. I have them in my backpack along with my laptop. I play on the bus, the train, on a flight, hotels, hell wherever I can. They are very much portable devices. Switch 2 won't be any different once I get my hands on it.

I didn't really think the Switch (1) was all that great as a standalone portable to begin with, at least not compared to stuff like the DS/3DS.

So to me the size increase here doesn't really make much of a difference.

I just think it's nice to have a bigger screen and bigger JoyCons. It's way better when playing local multiplayer in tabletop mode than Switch (1).

Nintendo Switch 2 had everything to be a good console... But those stupid Keycards have been the worst thing about the console... And then its 256 GB memory doesn't help.

IDK, Switch 1 was never mobile for me, if anything Switch 2 is way better for handheld play to me since the screen size doesn't feel too much of a downgrade compared to a TV or monitor

None of the Switches are pocketable. All are easily backpackable.
Wrong wrong wrong, i carry my oled switch 1 in my pocket at work all day every day in it's carry case & it fits absolutely fine zero mobility or comfort issues with it in there, those are normal work trousers too. not some super baggy ones either.

Maybe if you wear skintight everything you'd struggle but normal clothes fit it fine. Going back to the switch 2 the screen is too tall so it would be too wide for normal pockets unlike it's predecessor.

The adult use-case for a dedicated gaming handheld to anyone not on daily public transportation has to be teeny tiny. With phones being as powerful as they are, and dignity still existing in certain countries, I don't see many people with a lifestyle that demands it. I'm talking outside the house of course. I bought one of the Razer controller add-ons for my iPhone so I came game a bit on the couch during football season. For the right price I'd swap it out for a Steam Deck or something, but I got the Razer thing open-box and used for like $20 or something crazy. I don't want one bad enough to pay the asking price for anything on the market. Honestly Switch 2 would probably be my first choice. But portability beyond the couch is not a factor whatsoever. Portability doesn't really play a factor into that Switch 2 want though, but it is a nice bonus. Remains to be seen if I'd play in more in docked mode or handheld mode. Curious to see how I'd make use of it actually. I'd expect to play in handheld mode at my desk with something on my monitor in the background.

The good thing is that there is apparently community rejection of that "format" and many of us support the full game on cartridge.
I am doubtful much will change, sadly.

I think the 3rd parties doing that will find abysmal sales. I bet it'll be super rare after they find out.
I really wish I shared your optimism, I am quite fearful of publishers simply barreling forward or, even worse, just using it as data to justify further digitalization of availability.

I think in terms of an old school handheld, the 3ds is the last handheld. Like being able to put it in your pocket. But from th3 GBA to Switch 2, I always get a carry case. So it was rare I put the device in my pocket.

But I definitely consider the Switch 2 and Streamdeck a handheld device. If you got jnco jeans, they can fit in your pocket lol

I'm too self-aware to be playing videogames outside.

I fold.

I can't imagine a person who can transport a Switch or Switch OLED but can't transport the Switch 2.

That's really riding the razor's edge there.

None of the Switches are pocketable. All are easily backpackable.
Switch tablets are barely bigger than the size of my phone.
Easily pocketable in the Nike sweatpants I'm wearing right now. I just did it. Having said that...that was the first time I had ever attempted such a thing since launch. Not a thing I, personally, would do. Switch 2? That's not fitting in these sweatpan...oh shit, slides right in there too. Huh.

"Mobility" means I can throw it in a backpack to play it at a remote location: airplane, service center waiting area, etc. I'm long past giving a shit about a portable device fitting in a pocket or some such. The Switch Lite was probably the last handheld that could do the pocket thing, and not really even that one TBH.

If you can toss it in a backpack then it's mobile in all the ways a modern gaming device needs to be.

I got in the habit of having my backpack with me once I had kids. About 75% of the time I'm out, I have my Miyoo Mini, Backbone, Switch or 2DS, battery pack, diapers, wipes, and snacks. If I'm not carrying my bag, it's in my vehicle. I'm always prepared for a wait or delay.

Nobody gives a shit that I have a backpack and I imagine I'll continue to have my bag with me from now on, even well after my kids are grown. It's just so damn convenient.

Are these your pants?

My kids took ours to the brewery when we went out for lunch this afternoon. No case or anything, and they did just fine.
Until my younger son beat the other in Smash Bros...

Ehhh. Mobility isn't an issue for me as I'm always near and outlet/charger where ever I game, which is either on my side of the bed, my backyard patio or my couch.

Here's my couch that has two different consoles, each with two outlets and two usb ports.

I wouldn't go that far but i'm definitely less likely to take this when going away due to the size increase. The far worse battery life doesn't exactly help either.

Its utility is the same as a switch 1. Goes in my work backpack if I want something to play on the train ride to work or carry on for a plane trip. It's not like it's now the size of a skateboard deck. It's only marginally larger in terms of portability.

I was worried about this for two reasons.
- Bulky size
- Battery life

I have a long, cramped commute. Just under 3 hours of time I can game.
I've been using the S2 fine. I do prefer the smaller form factor of the S1, but the bigger S2 size is not a deal breaker.
The battery has been fine too playing MKW for the whole trip. Something like Cyberpunk, maybe not, but I haven't tried anything like that.

We moved from DS territory, which fits comy into a pocket, a long time ago. You'd need to bring a backpack, a small bag or something anyways for the Switch 1, so you do for the Switch 2. (theoretical, the Switch 1 fits into my trousers' backpockets, but it peeks out and it's too long to carry it comfortable in public; but many people don't seem to have issues with carrying their smartphones visibly peeking out of their backpockets, so I don't know)

There's still a difference to the Steam Deck that is inside its case noticeable bulkier and requires a bit more thoughtful backpack packing; the Switch 1, I could always squeeze in somewhere in a fully packed bag. Not so the Steam Deck.

I have a Steam Deck and I consider it "portable" I mean throw it in a backpack and you play it on a pane/train/bus/boat. Just because it doesnt fit inside your pockets it doesnt make it non portable. Also the last thing I want is another device taking up my pocket space next to my phone. Its not 1990s anymore.

I've been using it on my commute for a few weeks now, it's basically the same as the original Switch and fits easily in a front backpack pocket. It's also significantly flatter than the Steam Deck.

I actually find it more comfortable to use than S1 because of the larger screen, makes text much easier to read.

I personally do not have any issues with any of the portable gaming machines. But I am sure that Nintendo are working on a Switch 2 Lite as we speak. And that might be more portable for you, maybe?

Nah, but ill probably use it as my og switch - 99% of time docked. I have taken stewm deck for work trips, so being biggest is not really an issue as long as you can drop it in backpack
