Mentioned the G5 posibility in PBs... "The mother of all thermal challenges." Well put... they can get it inside but it is still heating too much. Here's to them keeping at it.

With the trouble they're having with squeezing the G5 into a Powerbook, when the first revision of it is finally released, I'd guess it's going to have problems galore. Wise purchasers will wait for Rev. B, and who knows when that'll be.

On the other hand, if a serious G4 Powerbook revision comes out after the release of 10.4, then that might be enough to make me upgrade from my four-year-old TiBook.

WHO DEY!?
<sarcasm>Amazing that so many people bought them. They must have been brainwashed by Apple into thinking white is awesome or something.</sarcasm?

When did anyone question the Shuffle would sell? Apple could literally take a dead skunk, write "iPod" on it, and it'd sell like gangbusters. But it'll still stink.

Apple was too late for me, I bought a flash player in December it's 512 MB and has more features (screen and such) and it only cost $120, sure I could have bought a 1 GB Shuffle for $150 but then I would have had to wait.

Whoa, 43%. :-o

The low price, the heavy promotion, the fact it's damn near everywhere in an ultra-visible package...guess it all came together with the solid product and busted up the market.

Did anyone see the cover of that new Business 2.0 magazine?

They had some concepts for where they'd like to see Apple go with the i-Pod. On the cover is the a concept for an i-Pod cell phone.

Anybody could have predicted this. The iPod Shuffle is sleek, cheap, and has the iPod brand to carry it. Go Apple!

My father-in-law has it. Doesn't know how to use it. I borrowed it, but only to download photos from GT4 since my flash media reader doesn't work with the game.

It works good for downloading photos from GT4, I can tell you that.

I never understood the iPod Shuffle hate. It doens't have a screen...so what? It's cheap, and you're not going to have to go through 10,000 songs, you're only going to be going through around 100. Ipod shuffle is awesome for working out, it's ultra light and you don't have to worry about dropping it and damaging the hard drive or the screen, and it's user friendly, unlike the other ugly little flash MP3 players.

I bought an iPod mini a few weeks ago, i've been assimilated.
I think it's a helluva product, but i'll admit that the shuffle is pretty worthless considering the plethora of better players for less money/more features.

Unless of course, you want the shuffle for its unique advertised feature - grabbing random songs to fill up the player from your song library.

As much as people love to diss the shuffle, there are some reasons which would make it the best choice for some. Marketing and cool factor have nothing to do with it.

All of the people i know who have a shuffle also have an iPod. They say it's a nice compliment to the iPod, but nothing they would own as their only MP3 player. That's how i feel as well.

So it's shit, that's what. I wanna have full control over what I'm playing, and be able to choose what I want, when I want. Something that almost every other MP3 player in the universe provides. Shuffle doesn't provide that, so it's shit.

What I don't get is how people like you keep asking the same stupid question. DUH WHY DO PEOPLE DISLIKE A PRODUCT THAT'S MISSING A STANDARD FEATURE I MEAN WHO CARES. You're not that stupid, so don't pretend to be.

BTW, what are the unique features of the Shuffle? Sure hope you don't mean the ability to shuffle tunes, cause my Minidisc can do that. Christ, even the Saturn could shuffle CD music.

I own a shuffle and I must say this. Cheap and works a treat as a portable memory stick. So what's to complain about. I prefer the shuffle to my ipod too.

- Hard Drive base MP3 marketshare 90%
- Flash based MP3 marketshare 43% (0% to 43% in the month of availability)
- 70% overall MP3 market share for Feb. Up from December Quarter

5.3 Million iPods in the last Quarter...

Nearly 40% of their entire profit is in MUSIC. That's fucking ridiculous considering the prices of their music equipment compared to their prices of their computers.

Just unbelieveable numbers...

...and yet analyists were upset. Numbers did not reach the forcasts and, although these numbers were good and volume was high on Wednesday, there was a drop in stock price. That doesn't mean much... I'm still very fucking impressed on the Shuffle's ability to literally TAKE OVER in a few months. Just nuts.

...and yes... the iPod phone will happen. Believe. Their recent "talks" with Motorola suggest that, perhaps, we're closer than we think.

Still upset about the G5 tho :(

CDMA?! AHAHAHAHHA! Christ I wish.

With the advent of 3G... we may just see/hear some shit about it in the near future... and it WILL take off.

If the iPod Phone becomes the #1 Christmas gift for any Christmas... the US is getting entirely too rich ;)

Old baseball nickname of mine (my name is AJ... how clever are 8 year olds?)... turned it into one of my common nicks when playing online games (Rogue Spear, Star Craft, FFXI). Also, used it back, like, 3 GAFs ago.

I DO like Apple Jacks.

I DO like Apple.

But I had this name WAY before I liked Apple, in fact, during the time when I absolutely hated them. Amazing what a year can do ;)

I bought a shuffle a while ago and I use it as my main player now, though I wouldn't want to be left without my Karma for long trips where I don't have access to my computer. If you like to use the shuffle feature and don't particularly care about listening to particular songs (though you can choose a few CDs that you'll be listening to later on) then it's a good player. It's unique feature is you can customize the randomness on it by using smart playlists. So you can put on a few albums onto it - which are NOT very hard to select, unless you consider pressing 'forward' 12 times or so quickly to be so much more a hassle than going into a menu and through all the choices, which I think takes longer - and then autofill the rest depending on your mood, like all your 4 and 5 star songs, just jazz or Japanese music, or anything else like that. With that, you have pretty good control of what you listen to (especially if you rate your music) so though it's random, it's still pretty much what you want to listen to.

Of course, if you only listen to albums from beginning to end and want to use it just for that, the player's obviously not for you and I can totally see why someone wouldn't like it. For my uses, it's just about perfect. Though people may gasp in amazement at this, I haven't missed the lack of screen at all, probably because I know most of my library and can usually tell what artist is playing even if I'm not sure of the song, after which it's an easy matter to find out what it was when I plug the shuffle into my computer. Its easy usability (like being able to control it through your shirt), solid build quality, great portability, and its trump card, excellent sound quality - which I in fact prefer to my Karma - all combine to make it my most used music player now. It's definitely not for everyone but that doesn't mean it's a piece of shit like a lot of people say.

When I say it's shit, I obviously mean it's shit for me. It's not a qualfication I should have to use, but obviously there are people who aren't bright enough to figure out such things. If there was no market for the Shuffle, Apple wouldn't have released it, or I might've blasted Apple for being so stupid as to release such a silly device. But the biggest Apple/iPod haters in the world knew this thing was gonna sell, so that was never an issue...it's simply about what an individual like myself values in a product.

I guess I'm ticked cause I was all pumped and primed to snag a Shuffle upon first hearing about it. I don't need more then one or two gigs for a player, and I figured this would finally be the perfect iPod for me. And if it had a screen, I would have one already. Then I find out what it doesn't have and I'm left here thinking WTF. I just find it terribly disappointing considering what it could've been, and really get annoyed when some people act as if the product is flawless and is thus free of criticism. Nothing ever made has earned that right.

grab one from a store with a nice return policy, if you hate it take it back. I actually got the 512 for a gift and liked it enough to return it (opened) to grab a 1 gig.

It certainly is not for everyone, though, I have grown to really like it. It certainly is not above criticism, but it is worth a test run. see if you can borrow someone's.

but you can do pretty much the same thing with any flash player, it may not have all the trade marked words for it but if I want to put a few CDs onto my Creavitve flash player and then fill the rest of it with whatever I'm in the mood for arranged by rating, type, composer, or whateverm, I can. It's just a matter of software, that's nothing unique to the Shuffle. Then I can, if I choose to, put the player on random and go. I also have the luxury to know what song is playing right then and there, I can listen to the radio if I want to here the news or something, I can also use it to record a speech or lecture. You may think it looks ugly, but number 1 I don't care what you think, number 2 it's in my pocket 90% of the time anyway.

I was referring to the MP3 player 7imz posted in the post directly above mine.

You can't randomly fill other players like you can the shuffle with specific music though. Sure, you can pick and choose songs from whatever genres or other categories that you want, but iTunes has a process that automatically chooses a random selection from that category for you. About the closest thing I can think of that you can do for other players is have a smart playlist generate a certain amount of random music in a particular category and then copy that somehow into a regular playlist which any other music player can use. Still, that's a far cry from just pressing a button. I like iTunes, and that's why I bought a shuffle (that and it's cheaper than the other comparable players.)

By the way, I have nothing against other players and I don't care about looks. I was just defending the shuffle and saying that it can be a pretty damn good player since many peoples' view of it insinuates that the only people who'd buy it are those doing it just because they don't know any better. It all comes down to a balance between price and convenience, and what features you need in a player.
