HBO Video has become the latest supplier to commit to releasing programming in the PSP format, announcing Tuesday that it will put out six of its programs on the mini-disc platform for Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld videogame device.

That puts further pressure on Warner Home Video to follow suit. It is one of the only remaining major studios, along with DreamWorks Home Entertainment, not to embrace the format. Now the pressure on Warner is coming from within, as sister companies New Line and HBO have joined the party. Warner distributes New Line and HBO product.

HBO's first PSP titles on Sept. 13 will be Da Ali G Show: Da Compleet Second Seazon (also making its DVD debut on that date) and Da Ali G Show: Da Compleet First Seazon.

Following in the fourth quarter will be Entourage: The Complete First Season, Todd McFarlane's Spawn 1, Chris Rock: Bigger & Blacker and Chris Rock: Never Scared.

can someone (preferably Darien) explain why people buy UMD movies?
Here's few reasons that I can think of:

People going on a 2-3 week vacations who want to watch movies/shows on the plane, in the hotel room, beach, whatever. They are paying thousands $ for plane tickets and vacations, paying 20-40 more for a movie or two seems like nothing to them at that moment.

People who have kids and want to shut them up during a car ride, on the plane flight, etc

Gadget fans buy many things because it's a novely.

Fans of a particular movie feel like they have to have it on every format.

Now, before you ask why they don't just rip their DVDs and use that - not everyone knows how to do that kind of stuff.

Showtime announced the same earlier.

The only holdout left is Warner Bros. Even New-Line (usually go through WB) has committed to the UMD format.
