There's a preview video there of the next season, which starts January 9th.

I haven't seen any of this show yet, but before the next season starts, I'm definitely plowing through the first. Sounds really cool, and the preview is fascinating. I can't wait to dabble in it and get hooked to yet another excellent drama.

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
I feel that this show is one of the weaker links in their dramatic line up....but I'm probably in the minority with that. Please post your thoughts after watching some.

Hmm, cool. MovieCentral here plays HBO movies, and for the first time I watched half an eps of it last night and it was certainly interesting enough to make me want to see a few more.

Going by the site you linked to I think I saw "Babylon" about the miners, so that'd be episode 5. I think that might be an ok point to start watching, or would it be worth it to acquire the first 4 episodes first?

Yeah, I'll see what I think. I've just heard a lot of praise, and I've been generally pleased with HBO's dramas recently. I just put the Carnivàle Season One discs at the head of my Netflix account, so I'll try and get those ASAP after it's released next week. I'll be sure to come back with thoughts, as HBO's shows don't get enough discussion around here one way or another.

Same here. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe season two will change that for me.

looks good. I watched a few episodes of Season 1. It was somewhat enjoyable but seemed a little slow going. Still it's an interesting show and that is what draws me in.

What other recent good HBO shows would you guys recommend? I seen OZ and Sopranoes. Certain seasons of OZ were absolutely great.

I thought the show was canceled. Hadn't heard anything about it in a long time. I've actually never seen an episode because I didn't have HBO at the time, but my friends raved about it. I have HBO now, but I never see it on.

I kind of like Deadwood. Some of the episodes were interesting. Nothing great though. I like Six Feet Under and I just started watching that last season.

The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm. Sex and the City was great while it lasted, too.

I feel the same way. It's like I was always waiting for some episode that was going to come along and clear up all the confusion but each show just added to it.

The Wire, most definitely. It's really rich and engaging after you get into it. The first season just came out on DVD, so that'd be a good place to start. The third season is just heading towards its conclusion, I think there are three episodes left. Six Feet Under has some cool stuff, although a couple characters really bug me. I enjoyed the first season of Entourage for what it was worth; just fun characters and a bit of mockery of the whole Hollywood system. Not really high art or anything, but it was definitely fun. The Band of Brothers miniseries is just absolutely stunning cinema.

I need to go back and watch Oz. I wasn't really watching much TV at all when that was airing, plus I was younger. I missed Deadwood recently, which I want to sample and see if I like.

This look SWEET. Between Carnivale, The Wire, Deadwood, Entourage, and Band of Brothers HBO has mad me a very happy camper the last few years.

Season 1 of Carnivale comes out next Tuesday.

Also.....

Wire:Complete Second Season January 25, 2005

Deadwood:Complete First Season February 8, 2005

It reminds me alot of Lost IMO. If you arent bothered by the constant new mysteries being brought up on Lost then it prolly wont bother you here either. Now if you are one of the people who are always complaining about Lost being too slow then you you might nto like Carnivale.

Wow, they're bringing out the second season of The Wire that fast? Damn, I figured it'd be later since the first just came out a couple weeks ago. Awesome :D

Baron Aloha

A Shining Example
I stuck with the show for the entire first season but my patience is wearing thin. Nothing has really happened. They keep playing up some big confrontation between the priest and Ben on the commercials but they aren't moving any closer towards it in the show. If they want it to be like the X-files where weird stuff just happens that's fine with me....but they shouldn't bait the audience by saying "something is gonna happen", "something is gonna happen", "something is gonna happen" without ever delivering. I'm all for character development, but having an entire season of it without really getting to the (supposed) main part of the story is a bit much.

Anyone know when the new season of Deadwood starts? That's actually one of HBO's better shows IMO (The Wire, CYE, Sopranos, and Deadwood are the best ones IMO). The first season was great.

Deadwood starts back up sometime in March.

Here's HBO's 2005 schedule as Yahoo reported it back in September:
2005

Early in the year: Lackawanna Blues, a segregation-era movie about tenants in a boardinghouse, starring Liev Schreiber, Jimmy Smits and Louis Gossett Jr.

Dirty War, a movie exploring the consequences of a "dirty bomb" attack on London.

January: Carnivale, the second season of the Dust Bowl drama.

Unscripted, a new comedy series about aspiring actors, produced by George Clooney (news).

March: Deadwood, the second season of the revisionist Western.

Entourage, the second season of the comedy about a Hollywood actor and his posse.

Spring: Empire Falls, miniseries based on the Pulitzer-winning novel. With Paul Newman, Ed Harris (news) and Helen Hunt.

Warm Springs, a movie about young FDR with Kenneth Branagh (news), Cynthia Nixon and Kathy Bates (news).

June: Big Love, a new drama with Bill Paxton as a Utah polygamist.

Six Feet Under, the fifth season of the funeral-home drama. (May be held until fall.)

September: Curb Your Enthusiasm, the fifth season of Larry David's improvised comedy.

Rome, miniseries about the building of the Roman Empire.

2006

Early in the year: The Sopranos, the Mob drama's sixth and final season.

I agree. It's the least interesting of HBO's lineup.

It goes like this, for me:

1. The Wire -- easily the best drama on television, period.

2. The Sopranos -- last season saw a return to what made the series great.

3. Six Feet Under -- quirky and whimsical, this is still one of the strongest dramas there is.

4. Deadwood -- meh.

5. Carnival -- double meh.

Carnivale strung viewers along, delivering almost no meat.

It survived on the appeal if its world, then made good on very little of its potential.

Deadwood on the otherhand was masterful. The best thing on TV.

i didnt like the two episodes of deadwood I saw. Characters all seemed unintelligent. The show also didnt seem to go anywhere. Literally.

Yes six feet under is great. I almost forgot that was an HBO show. You guys see the episode where the guy gets kidnapped? Whatever his name is. Freggin sweet episode. Felt very much like something from a well made film. Intense episode.

Sex in the city was pretty lame. Women do not want sex 24/7 as the silly show implies. Each episode is the same formula. The girls get some new boyfriends... do stuff with them, and then its over somehow. Next show they got some new boyfriends etc repeat repeat etc... At least for some of the characters. Real women aren't what the show is about. It is more of a fantasy show I find it. I am just sick of how people in school kept commenting on this show when it came to discussions of women and men and their desires for sex. As if you can judge human nature by some silly show. Whatever. The show is somewhat entertaining and has some decent writting. For what it does it does it well enough I suppose. An enjoyable show in various aspects to be sure. But also a show without any real depth. Very systematic. Very shallow. And deffinetly not based on reality.

The wire looks interesting. I havent seen it yet nor had a chance to.

I just saw that HBO will be showing the first season of Carnivale again, one episode every night Mondays through Wednesdays, starting tomorrow. So if anyone else wanted to catch it again or catch up before Season 2, here's a chance to do so.

Unfortunately, I might be out of town the next two nights working on a documentary, so I'll have to stick with grabbing the DVDs from Netflix.

dave is ok

aztek is ok
This is great news. I really really loved the first season, and the director seems to have the whole storyline planned out. For anyone that buys the DVD on Tuesday, listen to Samson's monologue at the beginning of the first episode, and check out the explosion at the very end of the trailer, cool shit.
